This is a valid point. Not sure where the projections are re: the number of beds/ventilators needed. Most states appear pretty safe as far as that goes. Unless we start to see data (that might be flawed) that the trends are ticking up. I do hope people can get back to work soon. I also hope that people are smart about it, but many probably won't be.
Even in NY they had estimated the need for over 100k ventilators and ended up needing less than 20k.

It is flawed. But, we don't know which way or how much. I sincerely do hope you get back to your regular job, soon.

Russia had this totally under control and really didn't pursue mitigation. The result is textbook exponential growth. Not surprisingly, they have decided to rethink their strategy.

For those curious, this is what unmitigated exponential growth looks like. The total number of cases is still fairly low, but if they don't make some changes it may get ugly.

I do think hospitals are inflating some of these to get more money. I don't know how widespread it is and there are also people who have died of it who were never tested and won't be tested.

Trump claims NYC inflating its coronavirus death toll

"President Trump on Wednesday claimed that New York City was inflating its COVID-19 death toll after health officials released new data that added 3,700 fatalities who were believed to have had the virus’ symptoms, but were never tested."

"Trump suggested that New York City was accounting for the 3,700 additional deaths “just in case” the victims had the coronavirus."

"Explaining the new criteria, Dr. Oxiris Barbot of the city’s health department told The New York Times that although the additional victims were not tested, their death likely wouldn’t have happened had it not been for the pandemic because it has overwhelmed city hospitals."

I thought that they were just under-reporting. I did not realize that they were not doing much, if any mitigation. I hope that they get it figured out.

Lol wtf. You can’t do that. Hey these are coronavirus related...... you know because they wouldn’t have died if hospitals weren’t overwhelmed.....

If you died of cancer but had corona they count it as a death for corona.

That's a good example. New York has the fifth highest number of deaths in the world. Behind only the rest of the US, Italy, Spain and France. New York has 48% of all the deaths in the US and if you add NJ, they have 58% of the US total and more than every country except Italy.

Which is yet another reason why the death rate is waaaaaaaaaaayyyyy lower than they're telling us.

Let's catch up. They're telling us that the death rate is like 3% or something. But they are counting deaths due to this virus very liberally. Heart attacks, deaths from pneumonia, flu, cancer, and who knows what else (car crash?) etc, if there is any possibility the person also had covid, even if it isn't tested, it is counted as a covid death. This is happening a lot, with assumed deaths being counted in the death toll.

Further, they have stated many times that lots of people, perhaps even millions of people, have this virus and have 0 symptoms or only mild symptoms, which is a reason for their social distancing order. That being the case, if there are really millions of people who are asymptomatic or just having mild symptoms, that is millions more people who have this and are not dying. This drives the death rate down even further. This death rate is probably .00005% and if we consider the death rate for people who are not 85 or older and who are not already compromised with other health conditions, the death rate is even lower than that.

NYC had over 700 deaths daily before CV-19, seems like they just attribute those to CV-19 now..

All of this has been ridiculous from the start. Also, New York needs to rethink its entire medical scheme / crisis prevention etc. Because New York has failed its people on the front end. That state government has to answer for the issues it has been having. Accounting for almost 50% of the death rate in the United States.

I agree that the numbers are very questionable about the mortality rate. I do think that it is still much higher than the flu and much more transmittable. I do believe some measures were necessary. They seem to be working. Just don't want to get back to a bad place by unleashing the all the hounds at once. I think a deliberate, planned approach is best.

I don't think there's any doubt that its more contagious. But I've never gotten the flu shot and it probably has a better chance to kill me than this thing does.

They finally started shutting down recently. They should start seeing some relief soon.

We'll start opening up in couple of weeks. We'll likely see some incremental increase, but hopefully it doesn't start running away. If it does, we'll be back at home in a month. If not, this Fall will be critical. Unless antibody tests show widespread infection, we are still a long way from herd immunity.
