Some of the worst atrocities and war crimes in history took place in Nanking, China by the Japanese in 1937. The world little noted and was mostly unaware of it until relatively modern times. It is a bit history that some of us may have missed. Since we have more time on our hands than usual I thought I would post it here for VN members.

NOTE: The video at the bottom of the page is an extremely good account of some of the events that occurred.

That plus the above and Pearl Harbor. There was a helluva lot of hate towards Japan.

Trying to whip up some unwarranted sympathy for Communist China?

A decade after the Communist party took power in 1949, promising to serve the people, the greatest manmade disaster in history stalks an already impoverished land. In an unremarkable city in central Henan province, more than a million people – one in eight – are wiped out by starvation and brutality over three short years. In one area, officials commandeer more grain than the farmers have actually grown. In barely nine months, more than 12,000 people – a third of the inhabitants – die in a single commune; a tenth of its households are wiped out. Thirteen children beg officials for food and are dragged deep into the mountains, where they die from exposure and starvation. A teenage orphan kills and eats her four-year-old brother. Forty-four of a village's 45 inhabitants die; the last remaining resident, a woman in her 60s, goes insane. Others are tortured, beaten or buried alive for declaring realistic harvests, refusing to hand over what little food they have, stealing scraps or simply angering officials.

Seems like everyone wants to rewrite their atrocities away. I knew of this a long time ago, it highlights the utter failure of humanity in that time and place.

So brother Huner you are saying that the Japanese are just as disgusting as the Hitler trash was? If there is a surprise here somewhere I'm missing it.

Dark legacy of Britain’s opium wars still felt today

"In the year 1857, on March 3, the opposition party in the British parliament, together with the progressive wing of the ruling party, successfully blocked a government attempt to escalate military action in China in order to pressurise the Qing government to open all of the country to British traders. Prime minister Lord Palmerston quickly called a national election and won a sufficient majority to reopen the war in China, this time in alliance with the French. Labelled the Second Opium War, it ended with the occupation of Beijing by joint Anglo-French forces. The Xianfeng Emperor fled the capital. The magnificent Summer Palace was burned to the ground in retaliation for the Qing army’s stiff resistance at the Taku Forts outside Tianjin which brought considerable casualties to the British invaders.

By October 1860, the Qing emperor had no choice but to accept the humiliating terms of the Tianjin treaties, which included legalisation of the opium trade in China. The large potential market had to open up to the highly addictive drug, with no legal bar at all."

Random flex imo.

Plenty of wartime atrocities that dont get brought up.

The rape of nanking was also not a singular event. May have been the largest individual case, but this story plays out across the entire Japanese occupation of territory.

Goes back to pretty much all asians really hating all other types of asians.

No. I'm really not saying anything, just letting it speak for itself. It's amazing how many people have never heard of it and how long it took to come to light.

Actually from everything I've read and talked to actual veterans about, the Japanese were far worse in their treatment of prisoners than Germany was. I had an uncle that was captured by the Germans in WWII and when the war was over he was just short of starvation and weighed under 100 pounds. The Japanese were savages that made the Germans look civilized because they considered surrender as dishonerable and most POW's of Japan didn't survive.

I dont like our losses in afghanistan. But during ww2 our total losses in the stan would be a one day total.
