I assume you’re talking about the student debt cancellation. It’s not a policy I’m particularly fond of, as someone who has worked hard (And at times struggled) to make $700/month student loan payments since the month I got licensed to practice law.
That said, I’ve absolutely had months where having that debt paused or forgiven would have made a big difference in the amount of credit card interest I ended up paying over the long run and I was nearly 30 before I was earning enough to even bother opening a savings account or start investing.
Some of those people are living paycheck to paycheck by necessity. I have friends who made reduced payments early on and now while I’m nearly done paying mine off, they owe more than their original principle.
It’s impossible to target that relief to the people who need it, And it excludes a lot of people who would benefit, but it’s not just pointless pork. That doesn’t hold water, IMO.
