Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

You don’t have to get everyone infected at the exact same time to do that. The curve is flattened, but the area under the curve is about the same.

You cant get everyone infected at the same time. Also, the current version of this virus is statistically harmless to people under 20. So it'd be a great idea to get their immunities built up.

What is lost here is flattening the curve is delaying the healthy and not at risk from getting it, extending the threat timeline for those that are at risk.

From the beginning, this should have been strict quarantine for at risk and their caretakers, and limited social distancing for everyone else. The blanket social distancing order and shutting down the economy in order to carpet bomb our way to a flatter curve will definitely cause more damage economically, and possibly more damage medically, long term. The fastest and safest way to get 80% of the healthy population infected and immune should be the goal.

I’m not an expert and will freely admit that, but that seems reasonable and there are epidemiologists that agree.

I would have definitely been in favor of a swifter, stricter lockdown that probably ends sooner. However, that probably would have raised even more ire in the overreaction crowd. This is the path we’ve chosen and we basically have to ride it out.

As for the vulnerable, we are extending the time they have to get infected to some degree, but lowering the odds they get infected over that time by keeping total case count down. Also ensuring they have better access to care by keeping our hospital under capacity.

You can’t just infect that crowd and expect it to not be spread around everywhere else.

Of course not. Immunities have to be built. When do you propose building them? In 6 months when this has mutated and does start killing younger people in larger amounts?
In that case the immunity won’t be very helpful.

The reason we are hopeful for an effective vaccine is that this virus does not appear to have much mutagenic potential.

If you wreck every economy what’s the point of the vaccine?

I know you’re homeless, your state has collapsed, and your kids are starving, but good news! We have a vaccine for that virus that has no effect on 85% of people.
What else will be delivered with the COVID-19 vaccine

I dont know the science that well. Is it fact that building an immunity to this one would in now way have the ability to help against a mutated version?
It depends. Might help some. Might not help at all.

If the virus changes its behavior that drastically it probably wouldn’t be a good sign.
