Once and for all, can we stop pointing to any source that uses the “official” numbers from China?

Using photos posted online, social media sleuths have estimated that Wuhan funeral homes had returned 3,500 urns a day since March 23. That would imply a death toll in Wuhan of about 42,000 — or 16 times the official number. Another widely shared calculation, based on Wuhan’s 84 furnaces running nonstop and each cremation taking an hour, put the death toll at 46,800.

Hasn't been a year yet, so can't be true. That's what they keep saying anyway, so I'm just repeating it.

Wet Blanket alert:

The researchers are now seeking investigational new drug approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If approved, they hope to begin clinical trials in humans “in the next few months.” However, such trials would likely take a year or longer before the next steps could be taken, they noted.

I will be transparent and open for discussion. My thoughts and mood change about this virus daily. I tend to be an independent, critical thinker. With that said, one day I'm convinced this virus has devastating, scientific proven destructive capabilities and current measures in place must be done. The next day I flip flop in my thought process, thinking this could be absolutely overblown. I'm just venting a little and certainly am not trying to belittle the job our healthcare workers and front line folks are doing but just checking in to see if anyone else has this constant flip flop of emotions about this virus?

it's totally ok to feel this way. The toughest part of this whole thing is the concept that even our best experts just don't have any good answers yet. Science moves slowly, and we're all here twittling our thumbs hoping for some good news, or news at all. It's so easy to argue now because all of us are throwing around incomplete or unconfirmed information. In our age, we aren't used to not knowing, and all of the uncertainty that produces. We're in uncharted waters, since most alive in 1918 are either dead now or were babies during the last comparable outbreak. As hard as it is for someone who isn't a fan at all of our current administration, I'm just trying to have some base level of trust and faith in our institutions (the govt, the press, our medical system) and the people that make up our great nation. I still believe we can prevail in spite of ourselves.

There was a story back in February about a potiental vaccine discovered at Oak Ridge Lab. I guess it wasn't a winner

I was but finally settled.
I don't think it's as extreme as the far extreme.. But I think the places where it's gotten out of hand have convinced me of it's potential to be bad enough. At least from an overwhelming standpoint.

Of course there's a breaking point, I'm just not there yet.

NYC put out an alert basically begging for medical personnel they're so overwhelmed. It can get really bad. At the same time, you look at what Washington and California have done...it can also be mitigated.

As completely shizzy as it is, I'm not sure what regulations they would be violating. Private industry sells to the highest margin consumers all the time. Most of the grains grown in Africa go to Europe and elsewhere for higher prices, while millions in Africa starve.

But we'd have to regulate such things first in order to punish. Either individual countries or the UN.

But we both agree that it’s wrong..I’m sure they have people above my pay grade that tells them what they can and can not do as a company..that’s why we pay turbo tax and H&R Block. ”To find the loopholes”

Oh I can't get over how far we strayed from the South Korea example.
I know we could never get this country to work together well enough but still, just knowing it can be done.. it just didn't have to be like this.

It’s like a yo yo for me while I’m working because of where I work, I go overboard. In my personal time, the precautions I take, bleed over from work. My head is on a swivel, trying to take precautions and not going overboard.

I don't know where they are in the process, but there are a bunch of potential vaccines being developed by different groups.

Vaccines just take a long time. New drugs take a long time. You have to make sure they work and they are safe. Usually, they start with animal trials and move on to humans. A fast track of 12 to 18 months seem to make a lot of experts squeemish. They'd prefer more time than that.

Those long months can reveal side effects that can be worse than the disease they are designed to prevent.

Sometimes some effects only show up in certain groups. Sometimes it's babies. Sometimes it's elderly. Sometimes it's people with certain afflictions. You just don't know until you test.

Some of the Asian countries had lived through SARS, learned a lot from it, and had procedures in place for when the next event occurred. We're...um...learning.

That was the headline. The article said something else entirely. They were using AI and a supercomputer to identify compounds that could kill the virus. I assume that's a key part of ultimately solving the problem but the headline was irresponsible.

Pretty much this.

It didn’t have to be, but here we are. Interesting how, we as a country does going forward, even suspecting we might have f*ed up in the onset.

Not playing blame game, bc trust me there is plenty to go everywhere. I was just explaining to a family member the short comings of certain political figures, whom they blindly voted for. It was eye opening for them.

In speaking with seasoned GOPers, they are ready to look at other options. Just hope it translates on signing day in Nov.

This is where the federal government should develop a policy similar to the recent compassionate use exception for drugs. They should allow people the option of taking the vaccine early before all the testing is complete, depending on the confidence level. The CDC, NIH, and WHO have not distinguished themselves during this fiasco. South Korea developed and deployed testing in time to stop their outbreak. Germany has an antibody test, so does Taiwan. We pay twice as much per capita than any other country on earth and we have this s*** show as a result. I suspect this is because we don't want to copy them, our government and companies suffer from "not invented here" syndrome.

We just can't wait another year for a vaccine. We will destroy our economy and our children's future if we wait that long. I'm 72 years old, and I am in no hurry to die, but death is a part of life. Look at this way, we lost hundreds of thousands of young men in WWII, and most of them were not volunteers. If this is a war there will be casualties. I don't want to be one of those casualties but if it comes as a result of reopening our economy I am willing to take the risk.

Ok so, during my first week of furlough from my job of 18 years. I have worked with my brother fabricating and installing granite/marble/ other rock stuff that I don’t even know the name of. That is some hard and heavy back breaking ish. I also worked with my father in law painting...... A freaking hospital in Memphis. I now understand why almost all painters are freaking alcoholics. Can’t wait to get back to my regular job next, never thought I’d ever say that..
