Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

I don't get it. These particles are floating in the air for a significant amount of time, then what is the point of a mask? Would we not need to wear eye protection? As far as I am concerned, if this is the case, as well as surviving on some surfaces for days, we might as well all plan on getting it as some point.
The mask is in case your are sick or asymptomatic. It’s to protect others from you. Not protect yourself from getting it.

Apparently the nasal passages is where it gains a foothold. I've been thinking about how maybe nose filters/plugs could be designed which would serve the same function as a mask, but use less material. I'm sure it's doable, but not sure how practical.

anyway, i think i recall someone saying that it would be difficult to be infected orally, or merely by contact to the skin.

Is it appropriate to say "Infected Orally"

Dr Birx said there's not enough data yet to prove you won't get it wearing a mask. She said even wearing a mask that your eyes are vulnerable.

I would of thought it would get into the eye membrane as you are not to touch your eyes, so I thought it would correlate to airborne as well. It is just so bizarre to me that the infection rate, R0 I think it is called, seems so easily transmittable in theory and certain scenarios, yet not in others.

Is it possible that there are already two different strains?

Did you read my post? The mask is to protect others from your coughing, sneezing, and talking. You don’t wear it to protect yourself. It’s to protect others

I get that. But Dr Birx was asked today if there are benefits of wearing a mask to keep from getting the virus.

hmm.. seems like it. I know the face shields are being used by medical staff. I suppose googles would be an easy enough thing to find, until the great goggle panic ensues.

Ahhh..makes since and something I heard before. Just thought they seem to be discussing it for everyday citizen use now and caused me to question it. Guess it would be for asymptomatic cases as the person does not even know they are infected. Thanks.

“To keep from getting it”. The benefit is to keep from spreading it. You wearing the mask won’t help you keep from getting it. But they are starting to believe it will slow the spread by preventing those who have it from giving it to others.

I really understand and agree with you. I simply stated Dr Birx opinion today when asked about that.

I was on a call about it today because the president of my company is going to allow employees to wear masks if the White House or CDC recommend it.

Are you talking mask vs respirator. Pretty sure n95 masks are touted as virus protection.

Yea this is probably the cause of some of my confusion. VHF has a great point, but does not necessarily explain your point. I guess any PPE is better than no PPE.

I see. Yes, the n95 respirators have particle filtering down to the virus level, supposedly. And that's why they are in such demand, but they look very much like a regular mask.

Mask is such a generic term that the terminology is somewhat confusing. They are on TV right now calling them N95 masks. When I think of a mask, I think a surgical mask which is used to protect others. When I think of respirator, I think it to protect the individual. I am probably wrong as usual.
