Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

I guess I dont get the logic of changing your style because of what someone else does when it doesnt impact you. It's not like Tiger or Nick can stand in your way to make you physically change your shot. They cant even hassles you.

I guess I just have a higher standard of what impacts a game, which is why I have a low view of golf. If you play a game you learn pretty quickly who is better than you and unless you are the best you get used to not being the most talented guy out there and it doesnt effect your play.
You don't have enough knowledge to understand what impacts a game.

That's just the course management side of things.

There's also the whole aspect of short game. Bump-n-run chip shots when you have more green to work with versus higher and softer shots that stick faster with limited green to work with. Also, you might have plenty of green to work with but still need a higher, softer shot due to a severe downslope.

Also, actually executing those shots and the kind of precision in the impact zone that is required makes these type shots really difficult.

There's the whole aspect of bunker play as well. For a short bunker shot, I might blast a sand-wedge. If I need to clear a lip, I might attempt a 60 degree lob wedge. However, if I need 50+ yards of distance, I'll pick a Gap wedge out of the sand. This only takes into account distance. However, if I take into account green contours, the lie (which could be upsloping, downsloping, fried egg, etc), and the wind all of this could change.

Basically there are enormous amount of variables in any golf shot.

In my opinion golf is a sport...just one that requires minimal conditioning. To play. In order to play professionally...it requires damn good conditioning since Tiger woods play ACTUALLY changed the layout of nearly or all of the course that the PGA plays. When he went damn near 20 under par at both the Masters and the Open at pebble beach, the designers had to go back to the drawing boards. Literally.

What did they do? 500 plus yard holes that were par 5s in the 1980s became par 4s after Tiger. Most Par 5s now when set up for a PGA event are like 600 yards. All because he could smash his drive nearly 350 yards and still put spin on it to make it turn right or left for a dogleg of necessary. He hit his 3 woods 300 yards. Hit his 3 or 4 iron as far as most people on your hit their drives in the 1980s. He proved that lifting weights and building muscle in both his upper body and lower body could give him the ability to muscle his way (with incredible technique, spin, and accuracy) through holes that were previously considered out of reach in 2. Or par4 holes that people never gave serious thought to ever getting "on" on the 1st shot.

40 years ago...in 1980...I would have put Golf right above throwing darts, shooting pool, and bowling. Somewhere just slightly less than a real "sport".

Not now. Recreational hacker golf? More of an activity. Pro golf or collegiate golf? You better have a 365 day workout regimen, daily stretching, and try to play what 36 holes a day on average? Those guys are athletes, and they play a sport that they have to train and practice for. Before Tiger, not so much.

I dont play golf by the way. Played in jr high on the school team..had a blast. After 2 back surgeries it is impossible . I still go to the gym and workout frequently...am in good shape. Golf requires a great deal of twisting on the spine and mine wont do that with fused vertebrae . I wouldnt be able to walk.

Best conditioned athletes on earth? Conditioning wise probably triathletes. Run, bike, SWIM long distances at damn near a sprint the entire time.

As far as professional sports? Hard to say. Point guards in BBall...much better shape than center's. They rock.

Skill players in hockey..but not the enforcers and defensemen as much.

In football...a professional Corner is an incredible athlete. Incredible. Fast enough to run at least a 4.4 in the 40yd...runs with fresh NFL receivers that rotate in and out running those 4.4s...and the WR is the only 1 who knows where he is going. Corner has to backpedal for the 1st 5 or 10yards and THEN sprint step for step with some of the fastest guys on Earth. Oh...and on any given play, has to be strong enough to tackle a 220lb tailback on a swing pass or a TE at 250lbs with a head of steam on a delayed release. SEC and NFL corners and safeties are peak athletes. As good as any IMO.

Line backers are no slouch either. Ever seen Luke Keuchly work out? The best LB to ever play the game just retired early for the Carolina Panthers due to concussions. Smart guy...made about 100MM and retired before his brain went to mush. BTW...Luke still holds the ALLTIME record for career tackles in div.1 football...played for Boston college.. funny thing about that??? He only played college for 3 seasons. He AVERAGED 160 tackles per season and finished with 483 I believe. Best all time. Went pro...defensive rookie of the year...and made the pro bowl EVERY single season before retiring this year. He was the best LB in the league. I have personally heard both Ray Lewis and Lawrence Taylor say that Luke was the best LB in the NFL...while he was a white kid about 23 or 24 years old. He just retired at 28 years old after 7? Consecutive pro bowls.

Edit...by the way yall know who holds the record for the fastest 40yds ever laser timed right? VFL Christian Coleman ran a 4.12 !!!! Forty at the combine 2017....Usain Bolt only ran a 4.22....you can watch it if you havent ....

How can this be 72? I believe you bc you are a smart dude...but I have read more than once that Keuchly was the record holder. Was he tackles per season maybe at 160 per and I just remembered it wrong maybe??

That bugs the sheit out of me. Will do some research. I take pride in not ever spreading misinformation ...if I was wrong then I apologize guys. Honest mistake

RE: golf

Advances in equipment (including clubs and balls) and other technology also went a long way in increasing performance and cutting off strokes.

No knock on Tiger. He was a game changer for the sport.

Yep. Most all of them hit it long now. Part of it is ball, part clubs, part agronomy with different grass and fairway firmness, part conditioning of the golfer.

Also a lot of developments in technology for swing analysis and fine tuning the player’s mechanics.

Baylor played 46 games from 1977-80. Singletary had 662 tackles or 14.2 tackles per game.
Boston College played 38 games from 2009-2011. Kuechly had 532 tackles or 14.0 tackles per game.

Pretty dang close.

72...

You are correct. However..the NCAA did not start officially keeping defensive stats until 2000. Since then, Keuchly holds the official record as well as all 3 of his seasons are among the top 50.. including 1st and 2nd. Dude is a beast .

Singletary 232 is insane...and I remember as a kid watching him play for the Bears and win an undefeated SB....the 1985 bears were probably the best defense to ever play ball at any level...and he was the captain and leader. Al Wilson reminds me of him. Scary ass dude. Grown men feared him.

A guy I went to high school with played at Vandy and had 212 tackles in ‘87.... Chris Gaines.... he was a beast

I dare you to put tap water in a vodka bottle and drink it during the teleconference.
My buddy was on a big webinar with hundreds of people and the presenter was droning on from the slides. One guy didn’t realize he wasn’t on mute and says “is this idiot just going to read every ****ing slide?”

The game has changed for the worse, along with football, baseball, NASCAR, basketball, etc. By the way, you are going to have to play a tournament on more than one course for 287 to be 1 over par.
How so? Tiger's Master's record is 18 under 270. I should have said 1 over 289.
