In my opinion golf is a sport...just one that requires minimal conditioning. To play. In order to play professionally...it requires damn good conditioning since Tiger woods play ACTUALLY changed the layout of nearly or all of the course that the PGA plays. When he went damn near 20 under par at both the Masters and the Open at pebble beach, the designers had to go back to the drawing boards. Literally.
What did they do? 500 plus yard holes that were par 5s in the 1980s became par 4s after Tiger. Most Par 5s now when set up for a PGA event are like 600 yards. All because he could smash his drive nearly 350 yards and still put spin on it to make it turn right or left for a dogleg of necessary. He hit his 3 woods 300 yards. Hit his 3 or 4 iron as far as most people on your hit their drives in the 1980s. He proved that lifting weights and building muscle in both his upper body and lower body could give him the ability to muscle his way (with incredible technique, spin, and accuracy) through holes that were previously considered out of reach in 2. Or par4 holes that people never gave serious thought to ever getting "on" on the 1st shot.
40 years ago...in 1980...I would have put Golf right above throwing darts, shooting pool, and bowling. Somewhere just slightly less than a real "sport".
Not now. Recreational hacker golf? More of an activity. Pro golf or collegiate golf? You better have a 365 day workout regimen, daily stretching, and try to play what 36 holes a day on average? Those guys are athletes, and they play a sport that they have to train and practice for. Before Tiger, not so much.
I dont play golf by the way. Played in jr high on the school team..had a blast. After 2 back surgeries it is impossible . I still go to the gym and workout frequently...am in good shape. Golf requires a great deal of twisting on the spine and mine wont do that with fused vertebrae . I wouldnt be able to walk.
Best conditioned athletes on earth? Conditioning wise probably triathletes. Run, bike, SWIM long distances at damn near a sprint the entire time.
As far as professional sports? Hard to say. Point guards in BBall...much better shape than center's. They rock.
Skill players in hockey..but not the enforcers and defensemen as much.
In football...a professional Corner is an incredible athlete. Incredible. Fast enough to run at least a 4.4 in the 40yd...runs with fresh NFL receivers that rotate in and out running those 4.4s...and the WR is the only 1 who knows where he is going. Corner has to backpedal for the 1st 5 or 10yards and THEN sprint step for step with some of the fastest guys on Earth. Oh...and on any given play, has to be strong enough to tackle a 220lb tailback on a swing pass or a TE at 250lbs with a head of steam on a delayed release. SEC and NFL corners and safeties are peak athletes. As good as any IMO.
Line backers are no slouch either. Ever seen Luke Keuchly work out? The best LB to ever play the game just retired early for the Carolina Panthers due to concussions. Smart guy...made about 100MM and retired before his brain went to mush. BTW...Luke still holds the ALLTIME record for career tackles in div.1 football...played for Boston college.. funny thing about that??? He only played college for 3 seasons. He AVERAGED 160 tackles per season and finished with 483 I believe. Best all time. Went pro...defensive rookie of the year...and made the pro bowl EVERY single season before retiring this year. He was the best LB in the league. I have personally heard both Ray Lewis and Lawrence Taylor say that Luke was the best LB in the NFL...while he was a white kid about 23 or 24 years old. He just retired at 28 years old after 7? Consecutive pro bowls.
Edit...by the way yall know who holds the record for the fastest 40yds ever laser timed right? VFL Christian Coleman ran a 4.12 !!!! Forty at the combine 2017....Usain Bolt only ran a 4.22....you can watch it if you havent ....
Tennessee Sprinter Christian Coleman Runs 40-Yard Dash in 4.12 Seconds
