I wonder if this is one of the people who thinks Trump is Hitler.

Do Luther, LG, Evil, want Trump to have this power? Do they want to give it to him? Want him to take it?

Two questions I have are 1) can it be done piecemeal, i.e. can he direct it just for medical supplies to particular companies, or does it have to be universal; 2) is it limited in time or can Congress reverse it if it were done rashly?

Warning: Long Post Inc

So an anecdotal story about your government interacting with commerce and the DPA.

Around 20 years ago I was on a development program of very very high priority. In the defense contracting business the goto priority is a programs DX rating. DX-1 being the highest. (Edit: these are actually a part of the normal stance in regular execution of the DPA from doing a bit more reading) If two programs wanted the same part and only one existed the DX program got it. If they were both DX programs the higher rating got it.

So this program didn’t use DX, it was “something else”. Which we as well as most suppliers had never heard of before. Basically if a part existed that we wanted, even if we THOUGHT we might use it but didn’t use it, buy it. Get it over nighted or even couriered if you had to.

So here is a paraphrased conversation I had with a part supplier.

“Hello I’m calling to check availability on <random electronic component>”

“Yeah I’ve got 5 of them but they are in demand and on back order”

“Ok we will be placing a PO thanks who should I direct it to!”

“What’s your DX rating?”

“We don’t have one but I’m pretty sure we will get priority”

“LOL ok! Place the PO and talk to you then!”

“Do you have order fulfillment and shipping authority?”

“Yes I do as a matter of fact.”

“Could I please have your name and is this a direct number for you?”

<provides requested information>

“Thank you for your help! Talk to you soon!”

“LOL ok take care!”

I provide the information up the streamlined chain.

30 minutes later I’m at my desk and my phone rings.

“Hello?”

“Hello this is <supplier XYX person I spoke with earlier>. Do you have a pen and paper handy? I have a shipping number for you.”

I **** you not that happened.

Strong arming companies with the DPA isn’t the power. Enacting the DPA is all that is required and all of the companies know it. This broke back “why don’t you use the DPA” narrative is still born. I know for a fact from personal experience.

Read the post I just made. Enacting the DPA is all he needed to do. No company will willingly be on the wrong side of that.

With govt mandates and 2-6-8 week mandatory shutdowns possible....how are they going to address all the personal and business bankruptcies? Can’t backstop everyone. At some point people are going to say “enough! Quarantine the elderly, we have to take our chances and get back to work.” National debt will be completely unserviceable. I’m fine with reasonable and cautious measures, but I’m afraid the cure is really (economically) worse than the virus itself. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Love how this “check” conveniently leaves out mandatory quarantines, stock market crash, economic ruin, and runs on paper products and cleaners.

Yes, compared to H1N1, this is absolutely mass hysteria vs total chill in terms of reaction.
I think that's what i was driving at.

I still think it's unbelievable that somewhere we didn't have a reasonable stockpile of protective equipment. I mean, I get the cost of the ventilators and how stockpiling those would lead to problems of obsolescence. However, we've heard about chemical and biological warfare for years (not saying this is either on the part of China or anyone else), and I don't understand this country not having basic protective gear. That's not on Trump either. It goes way further back than that.

0.6% is 6 times normal flu. Per Dr Fauci at onset (when Trump stated the 15 cases would be gone soon) said the death rate was speculated to be 10 to 30 times higher at 1% to 3 % if elderly
Actually I believe the vast majority of those that have died are either elderly and/or with other health problems. When those two factors are removed from the data-things "ain't so bad".

It's a failure across decades, agree

You willing to take that risk? I am not.

I've been a little behind on the news conference... but did Trump just suggest that his "kids' company" needs a bailout?

That's probably true.

As long as the production is put in place and we don't get gouged, I'm for that strategy. Whatever works.
As was stated in the briefing earlier. The power in the DPA is implied leverage. The company on the other end doesn’t want the admin to use the DPA. Trust me.

I would guess it’s on an identified on demand case by case basis. If FEMA or the CDC says “we need this and company X can provide it” I would guess company X gets the opportunity to be patriotic of their own choosing before the choice is made for them.

Fantastic. This is great news to see here.

You can choose to use your Twitter powers for good, or to sow further division. We should all strive to do good at a time like this.

May look at 3M stock on Monday. Been looking for an entry point. Good for them!

Have you ever used military grade protective gear? My guess is no. MOPP (mission oriented protective gear) is hot and bulky, and only gives x amount of hours of protection. In order to change into new gear, you need a place set up for it, dispose of old, put on new, new mask filters and a medical check if at all possible. This would (best case) include hot showers. Furthermore it requires TRAINING, not a quick 20 min Utube video. The amount of equipment and mobile decon stations, warehouses, equipment up keep/replacement to include the vehicles and professionals to run the stations, for over 300,000,000 Americans isn't in the budget.
