Coronavirus (No politics)

All incomings that are not early entrees will be at risk.

If we bury a couple million Americans, football will not matter.

The info my wife was getting about a week and a half ago from some of the doctors/nurses she knows or has talked with, some that are up in the Seattle area, was the eye opener for me. Said it’s not discriminating. Perfectly healthy young people are crashing just as fast as the elderly.

In the most polite way possible, I would like to challenge the above statement and ask that we are all careful with spreading what could be panic-inducing misinformation. Data from both here and the rest of the world are conclusively showing that the elderly and frail are at a much, much higher risk for severe illness and death from the infection.

Listen: as a doctor, the hardest thing about this for me is having to tell people that we just don't know. Anyone who says otherwise is FOS. I hate that. I'm not sleeping well. Every day is stressful because I'm supposed to have the answers, and I just don't.

Are the doomsday models right? Are we overreacting? Is China lying? Are our efforts helping? Does isolation potentially cause more harm than good?

I, seriously, have no idea. We are conducting a national/global experiment with no concrete data to go on.

My current position is that it's better to err on the side of caution, NOT lose your #*&! and go buy up all the toilet paper and Beanie Weenies, stay home if you are sick, avoid public gatherings, and see what the numbers look like in a week.

I really would implore those on each extreme position to breathe, give others grace, and see what the next week or so holds.

Use of CHLOROQUINE (Old school Malaria drug) has been 100% effective abroad. The FDA & CDC needs to get off the Bureaucracy BS and let the Doctors Use this treatment NOW; without all their "Clinical trials Jargon" ! The drug is safe and effective. No sense in waiting for anything; people are dying! If this were a new experimental drug; I could understand. It has been in use since the 1940's. Relatively NO side effects. I understand this therapy is cheap and Big Pharma doesn't make enough from it as a "New antiviral" they are working on. Hopefully Trump will override their crapola.

Drs don't have to have FDA or CDC approval to use a drug for something it's not indicated for...it's called off label prescribing and 20% of RXs are already written that way....now insurance companies might reject paying for it because it's never been studied and proven to work

I saw last night that a cocktail of chloroquine and zpack might work better, because the zpack works as an anti-inflammatory.

Food supply chains are in good shape. So are most goods supply chains. For background, my job is in supply chain analysis.

I think people freak out a bit when they go to the store and see empty shelves. I did on Sunday, for sure. But it's more a matter of manpower and getting what's delivered out rather than deliveries and supplies drying up. That's what the shortened hours are for- basically recovery time.

Oh but it HAS been proven to work. You didn't read or comprehend? The FDA has to approve it's use for this application. Additionally, the Government will likely subsidize the costs. This Drug IS being used here, now, but only in a few applications. No person should die without the option of having it administered. As I stated ; Chloroquine has been successful in 100% of the cases thus far; and it actually works as a preventative. If you are gasping for breath; I'm betting you would want it; protocol be Damned.

I don’t see any good sources. The one place I found basically said the sample size made the study meaningless. Plus it was in China where everyone smokes..

Yeah I've read the results and hope it gets used on more patients...there is also an issue with availability....last I read it was on backorder at most pharmacies

I haven't heard of the FDA or CDC preventing anyone from prescribing it. Have you?

The FDA head stood right next to Trump yesterday and said doctors could prescribe it. He said it's an approved drug just not for this use. He said more trials are needed for FDA recommendation for this use but doctors can use it now if they see fit.

The hotbeds that I’m noticing are in major markets on the coasts or especially cities that have lots of international flights. Atlanta fits that category.

Posted in the thread in the politics forum that Memphis declared a state of emergency last night and closed bars, restaurants, and gyms and gave MPD the authority to close those businesses not following the order. The health department for Shelby County is also reporting that they are seeing community spread in the city.

I'm more concerned about jobs than I am the actual virus at the moment. Meetings at work have taken a very dark turn in just the past 2 weeks.

Goods supply chains....depends on the goods and the region of the world. I know that South American countries are stopping goods at the border if deemed non-essential.

"More Trials Needed". There is your Bureaucracy at work. Ok Then, Put it to use. There's your "Trials". Get it procured and get it into patients Now. Dead people tell no tales.
