Ehhhh, if you're a bar owner in tourist hubs like Chicago or Nashville, you're pretty much morally obligated to close up shop and pay your own employees instead of relying on the state to do both.

It's super irresponsible to not only put your staff and their families at risk, but basically run a hub to spread this.
Im in Central Il and no cases reported in the area - from the interviews yesterday most of the bar owners said they were not paying their employees

Lots of folks in the public eye are trying to “out panic” each other.

That is why we are at the place we are at the moment.

Couldn't agree more! And as far as things closing it just takes one person/business/ or Governor to close something and then everyone feels like they have to follow along to not look bad.

Is that your answer to everything when someone questions the legitimacy of the whole thing. I said nothing like that. I did say he seems knowledgeable, and also seems to be part of the fear mongering. I merely pointed out that I thought him telling everyone to be prepared to hunker down was irresponsible and didn't help the hysteria over the weekend.

Perhaps it’s more irresponsible to tell people not to hunker down like the Mayor in Jaws.

As has been stated over and over in this thread. The real threat with this virus is suddenly overwhelming the healthcare system. If the hospital beds start rapidly filling with COVID patients that is a huge problem as most will not have the resources to to treat them much less the regular flu, pneumonia, stroke, heart attack, etc patients. This isn’t an unreasonable scenario as it is happening in other countries right now. We are currently on the same trajectory if we do not take measures to slow it down. Asking people to just wash hands but go about your normal life isn’t going to be enough right now.

I totally get the media coverage can be annoying. The constant ticker of cases is a bit much. Yes, the vast majority of those confirmed cases will recover but the threat of those needing to be hospitalized is very real. They did the same ticker for H1N1, Zika and Ebola. They were all constant news stories.

Bottom line, this is not some massive conspiracy by the media to get Trump. The NCAA, NBA, MLB, etc are not forfeiting billions just to get Trump out. They also aren’t making these decisions based on MSNBC reports.

If you want to complain about how the news media is covering it then the villain is the monetization of the news which requires eyeballs always on it. Fear sells “papers”. It’s been that way for hundreds of years.

According to Dr. Oz, that one act alone, hygiene, can possibly reduce the probability of catching Corona by 50%. So, it would not be irresponsible to tell people to do those things. But, depending on age and health, I've also read where a person could have had it and not even know it. If this is true, then would it not be reasonable to assume it is less dangerous than influenza? 22,000 flu deaths only gets mere mentions in brief reports. Why isn't there mass hysteria over that? Any virus will affect elderly and those already with afflictions more than others. Is it because this is new, and influenza is seasonal and were used to it now so we don't think twice about the mortality rate of it verses covid-19? Has Covid-19 even reached the amount of deaths world wide yet that the flu has so far in the US alone?? That is why I question the fear mongering. Not contesting being smart about your daily business, but why didn't we shut down everything to curb the flu? There is also responsible reporting when it comes to dealing with something that is unkown.

Because the flu is a steady progression over the course of a year. We have relatively effective vaccine for those who take it and tamiflu for reducing symptoms. Having said that, people should be more self aware regarding the flu. The news does cover it. Perhaps not as aggressively as it should so people take it more seriously.

This is something that is overwhelming hospitals in a hurry if left unchecked. If hospitals are overwhelmed then care for all ailments are going to suffer as well.

The fact that people can have it and not even know it makes it that much more likely to spread and spread to those that are more vulnerable. Hence the social distancing.

Washing hands is the correct preventative measure but let’s be real, people don’t listen to easy advice. How often do you see people leave a restroom without washing hands?

I’ve heard the opposite from people with ties to the Trump administration and to the CIA. We will find out shortly.

I feel like the daily course corrections by the Admin are causing more panic than the news... sorta chicken and the egg there... but everyday is something new from them.

SIAP but if all the people displaced from bar closings would go to the grocery they could surely get some part time work. I left a small neighborhood grocery about an hour ago and they only had 4 carts left. #MADHOUSE

Oh, I know. Work in bowling alley part time to make ends meet. The general public is rather nasty taken as a whole. Totally agree with education on the things a person can do to help themselves and others with this virus. Don't agree with everything on how it is pandered out there.

Because doctors can test for and know how to treat the flu. It appears testing for Covid-19 has not been done from the beginning.

Also, the flu has a vaccine. Someone pointed out that a vaccine is not a cure. Of course, it isn't. However, the vaccine is a tool that greatly impacts the mortality rate for the flu. If you just look up the data, a vast majority (75%+) of pediatric flu deaths every year are from unvaccinated kids. Some years it is 80-90%. I don't know about the adult numbers, but it's why they encourage you to get the vaccine. The last numbers I saw this year were that a minimum of 20 million in the U.S. have had the flu (and that's probably gone up). The mortality rate is fairly low with the common flu.

Wondering if any of the docs in this thread have seen anything regarding the use of ibuprofen/NSAIDs? Read where it may worse the case if you are infected

If so, would probably help to get that out as various Advils/Tylenols are common rotations for people with fever. (I’m aware the Tylenol’s would be ok)

I stopped reading at "Dr. Oz"

Update: Both the wife and I called our PCP. Both said we probably have it but there are no tests and nothing they can do, so self quarantine and go to the emergency room if we get worse.

Take it easy and rest! Hope it doesn’t get worse and stays mild.
