Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

If people are afraid to go on living because of whether or not someone labels or didn't label something pandemic they have bigger issues.
Humor me if this is labeled a pandemic in the next 5 minutes, what changes? I'm still going to go outside in this amazing weather we have today and go to work tomorrow and I come into contact with several hundred people daily. And if I start to have a fever or anything else like that I will go to the Dr. But guess what I did the same thing before Covid 19

Well bully for you. Some folks on this board, or their family members, may fall within the current high risk parameters of this virus and it’s their right to plan and respond accordingly. Even if you disagree, acknowledging their legitimate concerns instead of belittling them, or even ignoring it altogether would make you not come across as a jackass. Suit yourself.

Labeling it a pandemic doesn't change anything but refusing to believe this is one is also ignorant.

If it changes nothing then why are we discussing? It brings zero to the table. Only brings fears to people who are already filled with plenty of anxieties. No disrespect at all is intended.

The Surgeon General confirms we're past containment are now switching to the mitigation stage of response.

We're discussing it because you tried to correct me when I used the word pandemic. If it makes no difference, then why were you trying to gain back that linguistic ground in the discussion?

I don't disagree. And my in-laws have called me a jack ass for years but I still love them and visit when I can.
I agree with your assessment that people who have loved ones who are suceptable to this should take extra precautions. But let's not overlook the obvious these families should be done this every year at this time. If someone can possibly die from the flu they are probably aware of the situation the Covid 19 poses

Pandemic labeling serves no purpose than to scare people. It doesn't get a vaccine to market quicker

None taken but labeling it one may cause private business and others to take this seriously a "shock and awe" type attack if you will. At some point in the next few weeks we may seriously have to consider closing work and schools and if we're not using appropriate terms people may keep saying "just the flu bro" and hurt response.

Trump slurperism.

The reason to do tests is not to give a cure. It's to tell the person to take steps not to infect others.
If you're sick, you should already be taking those steps. People with mild or no symptoms are most likely not to seek out tests just as a matter of convenience.

We start closing “work” we have bigger problems than this virus.

The choice for our leaders is going to be letting this run its course and count the dead later or take aggressive actions like China and now Italy are taking to slow the spread. Either will have negative effects just the question of which one our government has the stomach and political will to endure.

Let it run it’s course. Government has no right to order private business to close.

So we've been speculating that there were potentially thousands of cases not caught but the WHO trip to Wuhan doesn't seem to support that and the death rate of 3.4% could really be correct. Also the Chinese definition of the 80% of "mild" cases people will get will result in fever and possibly pneumonia. Meanwhile that 15% of severe cases will need oxygen or ventilators.

There's likely to be more dead if you let it run it's course.

Going through multiple hurricanes has made me somewhat of a prepper by habit even though I’m no longer in hurricane zones. I can’t take the flu vaccines so I naturally limit my contacts during flu season. Based on both known and unknown information regarding this virus I planned accordingly over a month ago and I restocked/bumped my supplies because I knew that a time would come where I further limited my contact with the general population. I do that because only I can take care of myself since I have no impact on how other folks respond to this virus. I know folks are unknowingly walking around with it and they are spreading it. I know we’re a selfish and ignorant of common sense society en mass. I know that most folks put their needs above all others and I understand their reasonings are largely economic due to how we live. Knowing all that and the steps I’ve personally taken does not make me panicked over this virus. It makes me aware of potentials and possibilities.

The recommendation for how to help keep yourself safe only works if everyone participates. I hope the United States says enough is enough and demands more medicines are made here. Being dependant on China is not good strategy for the future

Which is why I've said there will be negative effects for both options. We let it simply go unchecked and we have a lot of dead, people will want someone to be held accountable for it.
