Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

If I had a company that was making test kits in January would I have been stockpiling them or selling them to China, Italy and Japan? I’d be making bank not setting on inventory that might never be used.

If I were in charge of healthcare policy for this country and my own CDC, HHS dept and WHO are warning about a potential pandemic from a known virus, one of the first things I’m going to do is ensure frontline medical facilities are ready to handle it, which obviously includes efficiently testing for it.

Washington is a screwed up state.

So is the Washington wannabe state. One is officially screwed up - the other is socially screwed up. The one on the east coast probably has almost all the test kits produced so far - gotta protect the "high value" targets.

There is plenty of blame to go around down to the local level for the poor response overall and I’ve stated as much. But the testing issues are mostly thanks to the CDC/fed

Well, I know I'm hoping my anti-virus program protects me from everybody here on VN. But just in case, I think it should be the rule that if anybody gets it he/she has to announce and self quarantine by dropping of VN until one thing or the other happens.

So we require ID for everything except voting because no one will ever attempt to vote illegally. Lol. Continue to blame everyone except for your flawed pant suit candidate. A candidate who didn't campaign in Wisconsin. Constitutional amendment to show ID to vote. I am in.
But no restrictions to owning a gun because that would be an infringement of your constitutional right. Got it.

My apologies I had not heard there was a death in FL today.
I think the 2 FL deaths were announced 3/6 with one occurring the day prior.

I just wasn’t sure if you hadn't heard or if you don't consider Florida part of the southeast...

Why are we not hearing how many related deaths to this virus are pet who are suceptable? Elders and people with issues that can likely lead to death.
One dog did catch it, but I assume you mean people :p Until recently we were getting information on each local case and fatality like age and underlying conditions etc. But as the numbers go up we’re getting less details on the cases. There was recently a paper posted on the statistics from China:

Comorbidity and its impact on 1,590 patients with COVID-19 in China: A Nationwide Analysis

30 k deaths last year caused by the flu. Is the flu a pandemic? Stop playing on people's fears. It won't be long and the truth will be out.
And when you bump this in April be prepared to say how many of those deaths could have also been caused by the flu
You’re missing the point, along with everyone saying "It's just the flu". If this is another (worse) flu that goes into circulation permanently that’s a worst-case scenario in the long run. Like you said, the flu kills tens of thousands each year. We don’t want the annual deaths from seasonal coronaviruses to double.

Ideally we contain this like SARS and MERS. Maybe the disease will mutate to something more benign and the more severe strains burn out like the Spanish flu. Hopefully at the very least the warm weather does a number on it.

Look I’m not saying it’s the plague. We really won’t know just how bad this is for a couple of years if/when we develop vaccines and antivirals. If it sticks around and the long-term incidence and fatality rate is similar to the flu, that’s not a good thing…

Haha, you’re inviting me to the climate change thread? I don’t know if the residents will appreciate that...

Tbh I’ve spent far too much time debunking the same conspiracy theories and talking points that recycle through all the climate change threads. It’s a never-ending game of whack-a-mole. But if you have a specific question or two and are looking for good-faith discussion (not just trolling) I’m happy to join the fun for a bit. I’m under quarantine the next two weeks so should have some free time!

Why is there a rush on this stuff?

I don't get it.

People don't want to get sick and possibly die if they don't have to. They buy items that allow them to stack the deck in their favor against a virus.

There simply isn't enough cops to sustain this type of quarantine over large areas of the US.

Truth! There was no response to H1N1 like anything on this scale.

This virus is more likely to mutate into something less deadly but this unfortunately will take time. Viruses don't actually want to kill their hosts because if the host dies, they die. That is absolutely an unsustainable strategy.

All the other items I can understand but why are people buying bottled water? This is a virus that doesn't even take out half the population nothing is going to happen to the water supply.

How does buying out all the TP in sight "allow them to stack the deck in their favor against a virus."?

You are on your own with the TP, that item didn't make my rational list. The water will still be running so I wouldn't be too concerned about toilet paper. If you run out you just hop from the toilet to the shower and spray away.

Well, people inciting and buying into the panic are full of ****, so they'll need plenty of TP for their bunghole.

I wonder how many of that 18k died of pneumonia and can it be said with 100% certainty that none of those cases was due to Covid-19? Does anybody actually trust the infection timeline presented by the CCP? Things that can make one go hmmmmm.

Estimated Influenza Illnesses, Medical visits, Hospitalizations, and Deaths in the United States — 2018–2019 influenza season | CDC

Estimated 34k+ died from flu 2018-2019 season. No corona virus being blasted across the air waves then.

Question for any of the doctors or medical professionals on the site, how important is the testing when there is no actual cure for the virus? Wouldn't you be limited to treating symptoms no matter what? What kind of treatment are we looking at? I assume fluids for hydration and blood panels to monitor vital organs. What else? And if you're a doctor and a patient shows up with symptoms of coronavirus, in the absence of a test, wouldn't you air on the side of caution? I can't help but wonder if people are blowing the test thing out of proportion. People with no symptoms, or with mild cases, probably aren't going to show up for testing. So that leaves the severe cases who are going to need medical help, which by that point, test or no test, wouldn't you still be limited to treating symptoms?

Until a few days ago most southeast states had only conducted around a dozen tests total, in some cases less. Maybe that’s “doing just fine” by your standards but demand will increase when people start dying in your county too. Hopefully there are enough tests for you by then.

The CDC/fed absolutely botched the tests. Have you not read anything we’ve been posting?
Considering I’ve had real time briefings from the CDC I can promise you I’m not worried

The test thing is being blown out of proportion big time. The health dept is only testing those who are suspected with travel history and after flu and other stuff has been ruled out. If there are actual symptoms the patients are treated like any other airborne/droplet isolation patients. Literally not a big deal
