Coronavirus (No politics)

I might consider canceling with the way this virus has effected people 65 and older now some of them were in poor health but I would probaly not travel overseas right now. I have a 87 year old grandmother who lives in Jackson, Tn who has been in poor health recently she lives in a senior home so she probaly wouldn’t survive this virus I’ve been worried about her with her age and health issues.

I don't think the virus is anywhere bad enough to have fear and not enjoy life but at the same time people their age are obviously the ones that want to avoid it all costs. If you're worried about them, I'd Express my concerns to them and have a heart to heart.

My parents are flying to Paris on Wednesday. Obviously I’m concerned.
What would you all do if you were in their situation, go or cancel?
Just saw this. I would do everything I could make my parents change thier travel plans. My parents are about 10 years their juniors. If mine were traveling to Europe right now, I'd be suggesting new destinations to divert them. I wouldn't travel overseas myself (I'm 39), if only for fear of bringing the virus home and it ending up spread to someone more susceptible.

If they're set on traveling, there are plenty of other options that are lower risk. For my parents, the risk to others would be more likely to sway them than risk to themselves.

They'll probably be fine either way. But, if you're wrong to not like it...I'm just as wrong.

My parents (70s) just flew out to go to Australia two days ago. It's tough because really even staying in the US is still a concern and they want to live life. Not sure there was going to be anything to be done to convince them to stay put for awhile. Guess we'll see what happens..

Those of us with insurance through employment may still not be covered for the COVID-19 test:

Why State Efforts to Mandate Coronavirus Testing Will Fall Short | The Incidental Economist

At $3,000 a pop, the 61% (per the article) of employees whose employers actually self-insure (often large corporations) might wind up with paying a good chunk of this. And of course, those who have no insurance and live in states that refused to expand Medicaid (and whose rural hospitals are now in danger of going under) are in line for paying full price. Which they won’t/ can’t. So it will be incredibly difficult to measure the spread of disease in the US. Unless some entity provides free testing in a public health emergency.

NO Should not go. Reasons.
Age more vulnerable but any age should consider risks

Medical support in Foreign countries is vastly different. May not get prioritized.

Family support groups would have to go to them vs being Stateside equals more exposure to a family as a whole.

May not be able to return or quarantined upon return regardless of status.

22 hours exposure in flight to filter systems of aircraft plus No telling how many contact points they will be exposed to directly or indirectly.

Chances are lower they will be exposed in US and if they are chances are greater that it will be more effectively treated in the US vs France.

language barriers French vs English may be another concern to consider, but the point is Support - in Medical and by the family.

Just an update on my parents Trip.

Itinerary
Leave to France March 11-April 23 (they have an apartment in Paris as a second home)
They signed up for some type of cultural tour in Morocco between March 19-29.

So my dad said he will call the tour company to see if the Moroccan tour is canceled, if it is they won’t go at all, fingers crossed.
I have a major surgery on April 28 and they want to be here so I can stay at their place while I recover. They are worried about not being allowed back if things get bad.

Thanks for everyone’s input, I’ll keep you updated.

If you have a major surgery needed and they come back with this virus without showing symptoms around you that isn't good.

I agree 100%
Not only that, I’m not excited to be in the hospital during all this going on. I could be there for 3-5 days for recovery and it seems like that’s the last place you want to be to avoid the coronavirus.

Hope and pray your surgery goes well

I’m 65 and Hubs is 70. We’re not traveling, other than in our own car to some stream-side cabin, until we see how this plays out. Maybe by mid-summer we’ll have a feel for what’s what. As it is, I always get a cold after any flight lasting four hours or so.

We are pretty non-social anyway, so social isolation is perfectly fine with us for the time being. I did my first “Ebola handshake” (elbow bump) today when welcoming our new neighbors. (They now realize that the stories they’ve heard about West Asheville are true, lol.)

You guys can come here if it all goes south. I have enough cereal to sustain us all😄.

Going out to Vegas for first weekend of NCAA tourney. Still planning on going here. Going to Grand Canyon as well so I better not make offensive comment to wife or she might be tempted to give me a little nudge...

Having been to the GC last year, I’d be a lot more afraid of falling lol. Blew my mind how many people were willing to stand on the edge of a cliff.
