MILAN (AP) — The coronavirus outbreak in northern Italy has so overwhelmed the public health system that officials are taking extraordinary measures to care for the sick, seeking to bring doctors out of retirement and accelerate graduation dates for nursing students. The region of Lombardy has been the epicenter of Italy’s outbreak, registering the first positive test of the northern cluster and now counting 984 of Italy’s 1,694 cases. Most alarmingly, 10% of Lombardy’s doctors and nurses are out of commission, because they tested positive for the virus and are in quarantine, said the region’s top health official, Giulio Gallera.
Did Pence say this was his sole solution?
You started this conversation with the "bigot" remark. Calling card of the victims. That or "racist" or something similar.
Its not a fair attack in the sense that presumably using common sense Pence will defer to the experts in the field. It is fair in that, in the past, he has failed to do that. It is even more subject to worry because in the past Trump has failed to do that.
As I said yesterday, over the last 72 hours it has seemed to me that Trump has sobered up to the reality of the situation, recognizes his own limitations in the area, and appears ready to defer to the experts. A step in the right direction, though this mornings tweets are cause for concern that he once again is making it all about himself.
The self-congratulatory aspect of his tweets is really just unnecessary at this point.
I'm with you. We don't know if the .gov is putting funding in the right places. FEMA should have an entire warehouse of portable emergency equipment to deal with anything like this. If they have the stores of supplies they really aren't breaking them out in past emergencies. We really don't know what they have. Considering tax dollars pay for such things and this does not fall under the infamous blanket of "national security" this should be one of the most transparent agencies. They are not. That doesn’t mean they can’t be stock piled. I mean, maybe I am wrong, but we are the richest country on earth and our hospitals don’t have enough masks for something that we have been concerned about for years? Doesn’t make sense to me.
The pathology of this virus is really quite different. Physiologically a second positive and full blown case can easily lead to heart failure via a stressed pulmonary system.2.5% death rate is bad, but not apocalyptic. R0 between 4 and 7 is also very bad, but also not apocalyptic. Almost as concerning as they death rate is the percentage in "serious" condition. From what we can tell, something near 20% of cases are serious, which could really weaken your immune system and make you vulnerable to other illnesses or even re-infection. If you are infected again, you have a much higher risk of death, but by heart failure rather than lungs.
Calling out the implication of your hypothetical question doesn't make me a victim. A victim is somebody who is victimized or is part of a group that they claim is victimized (blacks, white males, women, Christians, gays, etc.). You will be hard-pressed to find such comments from me under any circumstances (I'm sure I've got some taxpayer victimhood going on). Both parties are full of victims and victim messaging and it's a big reason neither party appeals to me.
NYC is a great place to visit but I could not see myself living there. The majority of the people hitting the grocery stores probably pay 5k-7k a month to rent an apartment & don’t even have the space to grow their own food unless it is a flowerpot in their window. I hope the outbreak is small & contained in NYC.
