Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

Quick question, and serious: IF (and I do believe that's a big "IF") it does get bad in the U.S., who IS equipped for a moment like this? No President or politician would have any idea what to do. My hope is that they would enlist the help of the the brightest and most-equipped scientists and medical professionals to come up with a containment plan.

Since we aren't there, you can't judge him. But, that's not exactly how you guys work, right?

Now, you know hysterical knee jerk reactions always get there before measured professional analysis ... it's just the way business and government roll. Neither one stocks up with real scientific/technical talent at the top; the real problem solvers only get there when the "leaders" realize they are in completely over their heads. Being that way if fast, but realizing it is really really slow ... and they will still micromanage.

Lets just try to imagine what Hog would do if he got sick.
First he would deny it.
Second he would isolate himself from his family. Would he be smart enough to do that?
If he did isolate himself he would either go to quarantine or steal someone else's medicine and food
If he didn't isolate himself from his family he already F'ed Up the main objective of protecting his family.

Perhaps but that could easily be found out by the feds I would imagine. I think using travel history now is kinda pointless with so many countries now reporting cases.

The feds don't have a clue where people who have overstayed visas or came without checking in are; why would they know what people who have returned from trips are doing?

Makes ya wonder just how much we've been swindled out of by the fear peddlers. It's #2 to only the climate scam.

I see a huge difference between those scares and this one. Those were all hyped up by the media from the onset. This one was and continues to be downplayed and trivialized "It's just like the flu!" they say. Well, this ain't the flu. This has the potential to be a complete disaster.

Actually, it isn't. You just aren't privy to most of the information.

We have tested a whopping 445 people. South Korea has tested 35,000+. This is information we are all privy to. Don't need an advanced degree to understand that there won't be any confirmed cases if you aren't testing anyone. That, to me, is an indicator that we are bungling this thing. What about the US response makes you think we have handled this well? How is it not a sh*t show in your opinion?

Screen shot is from CDC website, btw.

Nothing to see here.

Of the 78k cases in China 32k have been retested and are free of the virus and are no longer contagious. The infections in China have seemed to peak so hopefully in the next couple of months the cases in other countries will too
https://www.cgtn.com/special/Battling-the-novel-coronavirus-What-we-know-so-far-.html

China who has been dealing with this situation (since as early as December 30 and probably more like the beginning of December) claiming the virus has peaked should be taken with a grain of salt. This is just beginning in other countries so hoping that it'll clear up in 2 months is a dream.

That's an excellent question. If you ban travel to Italy, you hit both economies. And then someone from Germany brings it in anyway.

If you test everybody coming in, someone has a false negative. And people get missed anyway.

No way to win.

An economic decline during a pandemic is a foregone conclusion, full stop. Count those losses ahead of time and move on to what's most important and that's protecting the citizens of your country. Halt all non-essential international travel while maintaining normal import and export of goods.

Nothing to see here.

Up until now the CDC has only been testing suspected patients who have had confirmed travel to infected areas. That works in the initial outbreak of a new virus. At some point though you have to assume that there has in fact been an untraceable contraction of the virus and you should then start testing on mass.

I listened to the CDC tele-briefing from yesterday. It was 36 min long but there's a transcript. I thought they did a good job and it's much more informative than what you get from the politicians or the media. jmo.

Transcript for the CDC Telebriefing Update on COVID-19 | CDC Online Newsroom | CDC

Yeah, I had been posting those when I saw them pop up but not only did nobody respond to them in the thread but there were periods where they would go days without doing a new telebriefing.

I guess the real accurate accounting of who has the virus will begin when people start showing up at the doctors and hospitals with cases of CV. Doesn't appear that has happened yet.

That was the first one I’ve listened to. I’m used to teleconferences for large capital projects so it was kind of interesting. I think we’ve got good people on this but it’s not as simple as some might think. While it’s a respiratory disease it’s not exactly like any we’ve dealt with before however we do have a platform in place with multi-layer surveillance systems to monitor and track such diseases. In this case, a new disease, we don’t have any pharmaceuticals for treatment or vaccines for this particular event. Those things are several months away. So we have to get through this first season (episode) just using best practices under the circumstances.

I think the one complaint that I’ve sort heard is that we have been slow to ramp up all the layers of surveillance that are available to us. Additionally, there has been some criticism of not having enough protective gear available in the supply chain, not even for front line responders. Of course there has also been issues with the tests. By the way, Tennessee is out in front on this. I guess we can do our own testing.

Community spread is the buzz word that raises a lot of concern. Not if but when? I think CDC is right to say we better be prepared. The idea situation, given so many unknowns, is to be able to look back on this event and hear a lot of people criticize you for overreacting.

From what I gather, respiratory viruses love cold weather and low relative humidity. As temperature increases and in particular as relative humidity increases transmission drops dramatically. I sort of take that to suggest that these viruses can’t swim. Vitamin D production in humans drops off in the winter months due to less sunlight hours and more indoor time. This is not good for the immune system. So my added NPI’s are, boil water in an uncovered pot on the stove, crank up the thermostat to summertime temperatures, take Vitamin D-3, and don’t open the door for anyone. lol.

If/when corona gets a beachhead in the U.S., I wonder how schools will respond? Will closings be district by district? I imagine if one city shuts down there will be a lot of pressure for nearby ones to do so, too.

"Mike Pence is really very expert. I will be announcing exactly right now I will be putting Mike Pence in charge."

Seriously, Mike Pence just got told he was the starting QB of an unwinnable game that he's never played.

We should All be terrified that a career politician and sycophantic yes man is 'in charge' of a global pandemic.

Francis Boyle who wrote the biowarfare act of 1989 has recently as November told 4 different news agencies this virus was produced at U of NC by a Chinese scientist named Zhengli Li Shi at a BSL 3 and then taken to Wuhan BSL 4.
He said the virus, verified by 2 specialists, was in fact a " gain of function" work product. That equals weaponized. It means the original Indian doctors who posted that it was spliced with HIV1 were probably correct. He also verified this wasn't the first but the 3rd leak from wuhan.
You can check him out on ytube interview with Spiro Skouras

It cracks me up that the libs here have tons of snarky comments and posts about Trump everyday but disappear on most threads when it comes to Dems especially on debate nights. It might as well be tumbleweeds then. Guess they don’t want to go “on record” about the candidates just in case lol

Or... It's possible to think trump is a steaming pile of sht and also believe that that the people squabbling on stage are also fuqing ridiculous.

Don't make the mistake of believing disdain for one side equates to support for the other, that's lazy thinking.

Yeah. Amazingly, they are still up and running just fine. I was afraid they would have already shut down their website, but it seems OK for now.
It's not really amazing at all seeing as how the cuts haven't gone into effect.
If a 10% reduction has no negative impact, why would anyone worry about a 10% reduction in pay, or a 10% increase in taxes?

I just find it humorous that Trump, you, and others talk about the world class status of the CDC and how they will do what needs to be done to protect us, but at the same time feel justified in slashing their budget.

Trump and his base are largely anti-science. Explains so much.
