Auburn bans student for Vescovi comment

Our country accepts more migrants than any other every year. By far. Nearly 3x as many as number 3. We also accept more refugees for resettlement than any other.

Xenophobia is the hatred of foreigners. I can't conclude that the Auburn student suggesting that Mr. Vescovi leave America is hate. Maybe he's just concerned of his skill level and is afraid that Barn and Bruce will struggle to defeat him in basketball over the next 3 years.

I agree with you on most points and I don't think there should be any further punishment other than not being allowed student tickets to games.

But you are trying a little too hard to act like the Aubrn student wasn't being Xenophobic. What he said is the most common expression of it. He should also be punished for lack of creativity in his heckling.

I don't have such a liberal interpretation of xenophobia. The Auburn kid was trash talking at a sporting event. I fail to see the (irrational) fear (phobia). Also, Vescovi isn't an immigrant.

Which of these examples fits the Auburn narrative best?

Real-World Examples of Xenophobia in Action:

The Jewish Holocaust.

The murder of black families by the Ku Klux Klan.

The Indian caste system which actively hurts those in lower castes.

Exhibits of humans from Africa, the Philippines, and tribal pygmies were put on display in the 19th century in human zoos.

During World War II, Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians were segregated from the population and lost basic rights and liberties.

The Rwandan attempted "ethnic cleansing" which resulted in the genocide of hundreds of thousands of Tutsis and the rape of Tutsi women.

Hate crimes against Indians in Australia in 2009.

The war in what was Yugoslavia between 1991 and 1995 involved fighting between several ethnic groups that resulted in a massive amount of deaths. The groups involved were the Croats, Serbs, Bosniaks and Slovenes.

Riots in France could be caused by xenophobia.

The treatment of the Native Americans by colonists is considered the result of xenophobia.

The hate crimes committed against the Chinese in the late 1800's in the U.S.

During and after World War I there was some anti-German sentiment that can be contributed to xenophobia.

I totally get your point. The comment didn't cause any real harm and may not indicate how the Auburn student truly feels....but it probably does.

US nationalism is currently a hot button topic and our president has made comments that embolden people with that mindset. I'm not going to debate his policies because it's not the right place and I do agree with secure borders. My point is that there needs to be some sort of reprimand to show that acting that way is not acceptable. That was done.

You forgot "They are murderers and rapists."

Yep. And before all of those things occurred (and right now in the US), I’m sure there were plenty of idiots in those countries saying: “We don’t like your kind around here. Go back where you came from.” It doesn’t take much to send ignorant people over the edge. Be it Hitler, Stalin, Mao or a Klan leader, history is full of despots who knew how and when to sell their position and cause an over reaction. Messages have to be sent early that statements like that of the student will not be tolerated and hard lessons sometimes have to occur. Vescovi has just as much right to be here as that kid.

And talk about a hypocritical little punk. I wonder if the loud mouth Auburn twerp has gone up to Babatunde Akingbola and told him to go back to Nigeria. He’s a freshman center on the Auburn basketball team. Perfect chance for him to personally espouse his view of the world to someone right there on campus. But I’ll bet the little twit ain’t got the stones to say it face to face to either one of them.

Dumb, drunk Barn students won't be starting WW3. Severely punishing them for saying stupid stuff more likely would though. He was removed from the game. That should have been the end of it. The virtue signaling is over the top.

That's evidence that the kid was just trash talking rather than exhibiting hatred. If he hates Nigerians he shouldn't be an Auburn fan.

“Virtue signaling” or the values one was taught at home? If that had been my son at school on my dime and I saw him on TV or anywhere else making a fool of himself like that, I can assure you I’d have signaled him some virtue in person. The banning from going to games would be the least of his worries. It wouldn’t be tolerated in my house and it’s a positive that Auburn said the same thing about their house.

Or he doesn’t mind foreigners when it’s convenient. Maybe he learned a valuable lesson about trash talking then. If I had been the Auburn people, I’d have done the exact same thing.

Virtue signaling. This board doesn't teach values. Giving him a physical beat down wouldn't teach him high values.

Editorial opinion. The lack of decorum that has infiltrated society now is out of hand and almost anything is tolerated. One reason why I go to very few UT football games anymore. Last few times we went, we had to put up with a ton of loudmouth drunks and it’s just not worth it to pay that much money and subject your family to it. I’m not a Casper Milquetoast by any means but a lot of folks are just flat out boorish and I don’t have the time or patience to put up with it. Between that and the 70 inch TV, I’d rather stay home and watch it.

Every game that I've been to recently there's an announcement on how to report drunks that are misbehaving.

My God, hope he gets expelled. Ridiculous that he would think that's acceptable.

Also for those saying this is "Trash Talk," no it's not. It's racism plain and simple.

Saying "You Suck" or "We are going to destroy you" is trash talk. Invoking someone's heritage and telling them they need to leave the country is racism.
We have a ton of fans who condone and downplay racist behavior.

Such as violent behavior solves problems?
Such as I knew better than cross or embarrass my parents. Didn’t take more than a few whippings to get the point across and then all it took was a look. Same with my kids and now my grandchildren. When the “3 lines” appeared in my forehead, they knew they had crossed the line and it was time to straighten up. It looks to me like you tolerate bad behavior better than I do. And maybe that’s a virtue. Just not in my house. End of discussion since I am now officially bored with it.

Beating your kid's ass sounds much worse than saying "go back to Uruaguay, this is America".

IF you have kids, by all means, raise them your way. I raised mine like I was raised and have never had one ounce of trouble from them so I know it worked. And they are raising theirs with the same values and discipline. (Discipline entails far more than “beating ass”.) Mom always told me not to get into a battle of wits with an unarmed man because you’ll just get frustrated. I’ve reached that point. Carry on.
