The Atlanta Braves

I think baseball shot itself in the face with social media/YouTube (especially YouTube). They really missed the boat to try and jump on that and become cool and instead Selig was so obsessed with BAM and keeping his content that he effectively ruined the sport for five years for young people. Shows what an idiot Selig was

I was discussing the 1993 Braves staff with my buddy and it’s absolutely insane they had this group All under 28

I guess my question then is this: if everything is good, why has baseball spent the last few years acting like they’re desperately bailing out the lifeboat? Why so many rule changes and now postseason changes and the talk about radical realignment? By now everybody in the industry understands that the way sports is consumed is going to keep changing and all the existing business models are in flux, but so far only baseball is acting like they’re in an emergency. Why?

Wasn't the commissioner of the NBA just doing exactly this same thing less than a year ago? Doesn't seem like only an MLB phenomenon.
Silver noted the European soccer model as an inspiration for the idea that is still, "in the conceptual phase." Silver reportedly envisions both a midseason tournament during All-Star Weekend, as well as an end-of-season tournament to determine "the last two playoff spots in the East and West.

Pitchers and catchers report tomorrow and the Red Sox don’t have a manager. That’s hilarious
Aren’t they going to hire one of the guys already on staff? They can’t do it yet because they’re afraid the commissioner report on them will nuke him too lol

And if we’re talking about getting kids interested, it starts with getting black kids to think baseball is cool, then the white kids follow.

I think baseball is generally harder to sell to minority youth because 1) it’s much more expensive to play and 2) the infrastructure isn’t there like it is with basketball.

You can go to any park in America and they usually have a couple of basketball goals. Not the same for baseball.

I don’t know about Kingston or elsewhere in East Tennessee but in southern middle and middle youth baseball is king.

Maybe the biggest disconnect with youth baseball would be the kids eventually choosing another sport. The best athletes aren’t choosing baseball. And who could blame them? If you want to play at the collegiate level, you aren’t getting the scholarship options like you would in football or basketball.

Not really. Maybe for travel ball, but if they’re good enough that’s not an issue and if they aren’t good enough they probably weren’t going to play travel.
Gotcha. I might just be missing it.

But from my perspective, the white kids from comfortable families played baseball. Poor white kids play football and poor black kids play basketball.

That’s a big part of it too.

Tougher to go to college for free. And it takes much longer (most of the time) to go straight from high school to the pros. The latter group is very rare, obviously, but in many minority communities football and basketball are seen as a way out, even if it’s unrealistic. Baseball needs to insert itself in that discussion.

Its really hard to get a full ride in baseball anywhere. Most baseball players are on partials. Baseball just doesn’t bring in the revenue to even support itself in most cases.

Really, when we say minorities in baseball, we mean the black kids. Baseball in itself is pretty diverse at the highest levels, but not within the black community. Ideally you’d like to see more, but if these kids are getting scholarships in another sport, that’s excellent! Most of the black kids that I know within my community and the communities around me, would dominate tennis if they wanted. Can’t blame them for being pushed elsewhere, however, now that CTE and the facts surrounding football are coming out, maybe some will stick with baseball.
Baseball just isn’t glorified professionally like football and basketball, because it’s just not as fast, and exciting. I don’t think there are any marketing campaigns that could change that and that’s ok.

Don’t forget the glamorous days of minor league ball too

26 year old Zack didn’t handle the 2019 Cards loss very well I can’t imagine how I would have done 1991-1993

IMO the 1993 pennant race was such an amazing month-long experience that the subsequent playoff loss almost didn't hurt as bad, somehow. The NLCS actually felt kind of anticlimactic in a way that will never be possible again.

1991 and 1992 are a different story. Especially 1991. I'll never get over it.

I was 9 years old. I became a Braves fan in 1988 so all I knew was last place. I was just thrilled to make the playoffs. It was only after we only ended up winning 1 WS that I really lamented 1991.

The 1996 loss to the Yankees and 1997 loss to the Marlins are the two that really stung me.
