*****2020 National Signing Day Thread

Football will pay for everything. Walk on at basketball. Many football programs had scholarship track athletes back in early 90s.
What's the limit of walk on's a basketball team can have?

Meanwhile the hits just keep coming:

Absolute shocker: Florida fans reeling after S Avantae Williams chooses Miami over Gators

It was seen as a lock for the Gators at a position of need, but in the end, Florida fans are left reeling after a top tier safety — Avantae Williams — chose to play at Miami and not for coach Dan Mullen’s program.

Williams is the No. 2-ranked safety in this year’s recruiting class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

The announcement for Williams came after he was heavily expected to sign with Florida. All 12 of the “crystal ball” predictions on his 247Sports page had him going to the Gators.

Here’s some reaction to Williams choosing Miami over Florida:

Terrible NSD for the Gators. Beck to Tenn, can’t flip a RB from COLORADO, and Avantae Williams picks Miami over UF. Fire Knox and fire English, can’t recruit and can’t coach.

Absolute shocker: Florida fans reeling after S Avantae Williams chooses Miami over Gators

Edit: Florida also lost out on a 4 star APB to UK today.

Due to the Bear Bryant rule, if you play football it has to be the one that extends the scholarship. Bryant used to load up other sports with football players. In 1975 the NCAA eliminated the practice.
If they eliminated the Bear Bryant rule how is it done now?
Please disregard question I understand it now. Thanks

Just checking the recruiting rankings and noticed USC in the mid twenties, what in the world has happened there? I know Clay Helton is on borrowed time but USC has always had the luxury of recruiting itself. Recruits have always flocked to sunny California with its beaches and bikinis and such.

They eliminated the ability of football players to sign scholarships with other sports. Bryant used to use swim and gymnastics to get football players scholarships. Now it would have to be a football scholarship even if they were great at another sport.

They were in 70's in early December.

Some improvement but if you're a Top tier P5 school is in CA, TX, FL, OH or GA how can not have a Top 10 recruiting class.

Best possible outcome today imo!

Are we officially done with 2020 class? Is there even any space for anyone else?

They are 54th on 247 and 10th in the PAC-12 ..66th on Rivals should have fired Helton 20200205_140746.jpg

#8 on Rivals is great...but man ....ESPN has us 19. Sec network too since sec uses espns rankings. I'd like to believe Rivals is more accurate. Lol.

hey count against football. It's commonly referred as the Bear Bryant rule. Bear used to have 270 lb. tennis players at UA.
So with Wideman he will count as a scholarship player with football and as a walk on with basketball with football paying full tuition? If that's right then with the Bear Bryant rule how did it benefit the football team with all scholarship players counting against their numbers?
Volarmy74 answered question while I was typing. If you have more info to add please do I had never heard of this rule until today.

It's the exact same group of players. Why is some arbitrary number assigned to them by a subject source matter at all? These are the guys we got.

Not that many good college football teams west of the Mississippi river the last few years means not many good high school players to recruit.

This what happens when you're a dead man walking as a coach. The new AD is on thin ice as well, he extended Helton. Supposed insiders are saying Chris Petersen wanted a one year down time and he'll sign on at SC next year.

WIdeman kind of reminds me of Randy Moss. Looks like he could be just as good too. He may be the player I am most excited to get.
And please lord let Rick Barnes turn him loose. I freaking can't wait till basket ball next year.
