That is so cool!! How long have you wanted to make this trip? No, I didn't do a thread - figured it would be overkill. Most of it was concerts (two different performances and venues a night) and eating. But we did visit a high school music conservatory (we donated "fake books", aka gig books, along with guitar strings, reeds etc.) to the jazz band. We also visited an organic farm up in the hills. Met so many wonderful people who were very good-natured and accepting of my terrible Spanglish, that periodically included French, plus veered at times into an Italian accent. At one point I found myself speaking German for reasons unknown.
The Cubans love having Americans visit, mainly because it is made so difficult by the US State Department. I kind of decided that anything I posted would wander off into politics, which I don't want to do here. It's a shame, because it's a fantastic country - I'm talking about the people. They have hung together through a lot in the last 60 years. The musicians and artists are very open and critical about things that they think need improving (the PCC, etc.) The only grumpy Cubans we saw were the honor guards at the Museum of the Revolution, who apparently were chosen for their ability to scowl. They looked like something from a time warp.
Hubs and I knew that there was an international jazz festival in Havana each year, and I have always loved Latin jazz, especially Afro-Cuban. The more percussion and horns, the happier I am. We figured we'd better go while we can - I turned 65 last October, and he turned 70 in Cuba. No time like the present! That is so cool!! How long have you wanted to make this trip?
That is so cool!!! I seriously love everything about this!!Hubs and I knew that there was an international jazz festival in Havana each year, and I have always loved Latin jazz, especially Afro-Cuban. I Googled havana jazz festival tours and came across the one we went on (Havana Music Tours/ Musical Getaways.) The tour organizer is a jazz drummer from Atlanta who is engaged to a musicologist who teaches at the high school music conservatory we visited, and the emphasis was on small groups, lots of contact with the people, and music, music, music. Oh, and food.Which was excellent. AND beer and mixed drinks are cheaper than bottled water, which tourists have to stick to. (Cubans are used to their water and can drink from the tap; not wise for us tourists.) We even learned salsa dancing, which Hubs had vowed that he would not do.![]()
Anyway, it sounded like a great break from the usual museums and churches tours, and the Trip Advisor ratings were all 5 star. So we took a chance, and it was fabulous! It was actually our first trip out of the country together, and there was something to be said for having someone else handle the whole thing - housing, meals, transportation, translations, tickets. Wherever we go next trip, we'll probably do a roll-your-own, but this was a great start.
The tour organizer is planning another trip in November that will last longer and go around the island. We're tempted, but we're refusing to decide for a while, as we really need to recover from the remodeling as well as the trip. So we'll see!
