Oklahoma football: Two Sooner defenders entering transfer portal

Oklahoma's Jordan Parker has reportedly entered the transfer portal

The transfer portal is open in Norman, Oklahoma.
Oklahoma defensive back Jordan Parker has become the 12th player to enter the transfer portal and look for other options since the start of the 2019 season’s fall camp, according to a report from The Athletic’s Jason Kersey.

Since last Friday, five Oklahoma defenders have entered the transfer portal. Parker followed defensive linemen Troy James, linebackers Ryan Jones and Levi Draper, as well as RUSH linebacker Mark Jackson

A couple of weeks after All-Big 12 linebacker Kenneth Murray declared he was forgoing his final year of eligibility and was headed to the NFL, OU safety Ryan Jones and linebacker Levi Draper have decided to leave the team and place their name in the transfer portal.

Jones, a redshirt sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina, was a member of Oklahoma’s 2017 recruiting class. He was recruited as a four-star wide-receiver prospect, but was switched to defense when he arrived at OU. He had originally committed to North Carolina, before changing to OU.

Jones was credited with nine tackles and an interception, playing in six games for the Sooners in the 2019 season. He may end up at North Carolina, the school to which he initially committed in 2017. He also had offers from Clemson, Kentucky, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Tennessee. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at his new school.

Draper, an inside linebacker, played in all 14 games for Oklahoma this past season, primarily on special teams. The redshirt sophomore from Collinsville, Oklahoma, was expected to play a larger role his junior and senior seasons. Like Jones, Draper was a member of Lincoln Riley’s 2017 recruiting class, a top-10 class that included Murray, Trey Sermon, CeeDee Lamb, Charleston Rambo, Creed Humphrey and others.

A four-star prospect out of high school, Draper’s playing time has been limited except for special teams. He also will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Oklahoma doesn’t have a lot of depth at the inside linebacker position. Caleb Kelly, Deshaun White and Brian Asamoah are the only inside linebackers returning for next season. Four-star prospect Bryden Walker and Shane Whittier are 2020 signees who could see some action at linebacker next fall.

I'm starting to believe that things will get interesting September 12th in Norman.. With decent QB play I do believe we could pull the upset. Amazing how far we've come in the last few months. A victory in Norman is looking more possible by the day Nation. 2020 is going to be a intersting year on Rocky Top.

I wish we could flip when we played UGA and OU. UGA will be due some suspensions early per the usual and these transfers are more depth hits for OU. I'd rather play them later when depth becomes an issue for most football teams. Regardless, I'm being redundant across several threads but next year is an incredibly important year for CJP, our team, and our program

Wait until the transfer rules change. You ain’t seen nothing yet. Coaches will be fools to sign full classes. It will start a whole new recruiting season. Wait for the portal to fill and recruit to your needs.

Any of these guys play positions of need that we would want to jump on?

Could be twice as good if they lose quality guys and we steal them away before our game next season.

With decent QB play. Boy you said a mouth full there. The entire 2020 season will depend on that one.

We’ll need a big game from Gray, Chandler, Jordan, and the Defense as a whole if Tennessee wants to win.
Big 12 teams aren't noted as having good defenses and I'd like to see UT establish a solid running game with a big back. I think our next big back on this roster will be Hodge or Whitehead but both won't be on campus until this summer. Our current group of running backs have to be salivating running behind this Oline. OU fans will be looking for Rattler to light-it-up in the passing game because I think OU still has a solid group of receivers. I don't know if Rattler is a good running QB and if he is this has been giving our D a lot of trouble.

I'm not sure how many we have left to give this year, but I had anticipated Pruitt holding 1-2 to use in the portal sweepstakes after spring ball. If he can grab Beckwith, Hardy and Wideman in this cycle, go for it. If it's a kid we need to "develop", I'd hold on for some immediate help in the portal.

we have two scholarships available right now...I'm sure there could be some inventive bookkeeping, if needed...the portal is a tool for hopefully "instant" help, but a coach would be foolish to totally rely on it...recruiting freshman will always be the best for a solid program...

GO BIG ORANGE!

We are going to have to score 45 if we hope to win that game. Their offense is going to be just as good next year.
Maybe catching them early helps but I think they will have to beat themselves. A couple of turnovers might be game changers but we will have to take care of the ball ourselves and play solid in all phases.

I agree, HOPE springs eternal but we must remember we do not have an established QB.
Also early we lost to G State, BYU, UF 34 to 03 & UGA 43 to 14.
in the middle we beat MS 20 to 10 , lost respectably to Bama 35 to 13, win vs 41 to 21 USCe & beat UAB solid 30 to 07
End stretch we held on to beat UK 17 to 13 survived 24 to 20 at Mizzou, played horrible vs Vandy 28 to 10 win sans Oline & E Gray & Improbable come back vs Indiana 23 to 22.
With Bi-Polar QB play we will......even with improved play across the board. be 3rd in the East
With all that said
We could end up 8 & 5 or 9 & 4 not bad but not where we want to be.
A lot of our wins this year were close so just being a realist we have little room for perfect storm errors
2015 & 16
9 & 4 was good but still 2nd fiddle.
Cross my fingers that JG finally gets it consistently game in and game out or HB is so good can't keep him off the field.
GBO..

I was going to say the same thing. It’s going to get to the point where teams are only going to sign 20 players and sift through the portal for 5 ready-to-start players from other schools. I’m sure some head coaches are salivating at this opportunity. It’s very similar to getting a JUCO player except the chances of you getting a top flight recruit are greatly increased. And as long as you have a great culture, your team shouldn’t have to worry about losing your kids to the transfer portal. I see this as a big win for UT.

Who said totally? Every team will primarily build their roster with HS recruits.
With attrition, you will be better to sprinkle in a few transfers to balance the roster.

Thing is, we don't play the 2020 schedule with the 2019 team.

Georgia could be demoralized by the time we play them. They will have played Alabama, Auburn and Florida. With two or more losses their spirit could be down if they are an early elimination from CFP.

Transfer portal aside, Oklahoma didn't have a lot of Seniors: 7 on offense, 9 on defense and 0 special teams losses. Don't know how many were starters but 2 were QBs including Hurts, 3 WR, 2 OL, 4 DL, 2 LB, 1 S, 2 CB.

Agreed. While the portal won't usually yield kids like Mayes for us, it can help fill immediate needs that recruiting can't. An edge rusher leaps to mind.

Sounds like we shipped our schedule maker to Athens, no? As for OU, they're losing guys to the draft but the others likely won't hurt them. I'm not seeing a lot of starters leaving for the sake of leaving. OU will have plenty of talent and fight when we roll in to play them. I just hope it's a well played, competitive game.

I hope Bailey is already throwing with the WRs. If JG is hogging the off-season reps, we are screwed.

We’ll have to play ball control and kill the clock to win. Keeping the offense off the field will be critical in getting the win. Tennessee absolutely can not get caught trying to keep up with that offense
