Some off season topics to discuss

Just a few things to discuss this off season:

1. Playoff. I think this year proved more than ever that 4 teams is perfect. There was a massive dropoff to the 4th team....adding a 5th or 6th would have further diluted the pool. Also, the break was too long between the playoff and the championship game. The average fan lost interest. And for goodness sake, have the Championship Game on a Saturday night. I guarantee viewership would be up, especially for the second half and people would plan parties around it increasing beer and food sales.

2. Targeting. They really need to look at the penal portion of the rule. I think the call can be made without ejection from the game. You can kick, punch or choke a guy after the play, and will only receive a 15 yard penalty...yet a play during the course of action gets you ejected??? Too penal for my taste.

3. Portal. Like the first time you got your AOL disc to join the internet, somebody was already figuring out how to put porn on there...and make money off of it. The portal is becoming that. D'Eriq King....redshirted (quit) on his team after a few losses so he could save his eligibility and enter the portal. I'm not sure that was the intent. The NCAA either needs to just allow all transfers or enforce their own rules. Right now waivers are inconsistent and frustrating.

4. Conference realignment. Like the portal....money is driving these conferences and I think we start seeing some changes to alignment. Each team is a balance sheet item...if you are a non performing or under performing asset, there will be pressure to cut them loose and look to another asset to fill their place. There are other factors....for say a school like Vanderbilt, who has the Nashville TV market and drastically under performs in TV revenue...but their academic grants and recognition keep them listed as an asset to the SEC. But what about Missouri...similar market...no fringe academic benefit. There profitability analysis would be weak at best. I am not saying I want to see conference re-alignment, I like things just the way they are, I just think they are inevitable.

Hey, you didn't mention who our starter at QB is gonna be, so I'll bite.

#1 I think 4 is a good number for a playoff in most seasons as well. Each year is different. Each time the playoff expands, then the regular season suffers from an importance standpoint. One of the great things about CFB is that the regular season is like life and death every week. As a playoff expends, then more games would become expendable for the good teams. We already have scrub games that have no suspense, like GA St. (Oh, wait!) Everybody (exc. ND) already has a defacto 1st playoff game in their conference title game. So, I say no expansion and pick the best 4 regardless and don't make football like basketball, where the regular season is just for tourney seeding and then the real games begin.

#2 Targeting has certainly been reduced by the brutality of the rule. You can tell just by watching LBs and Safeties nowadays. As bad as that Clemson LB getting tossed was (and plenty of others), it's starting to take hold in the game. Now, one part of the rule that totally sucks is what happened to that OSU db that targeted Lawrence bc TL ducked into him. Of the targeted player made the motion to become targeted, then it should not be called.

#3 I'm for LESS ease of xfers. It dilutes the "teams" and rivalries. Look at the NBA and the shuffle. CFB is headed that way. And yeah, less subjective rulings are better.

#4 Don't care. I'm sick of how "conferences" have impacted the game. I'd rather see us play 4 "conference/regular" opponents and 8 oocs. With all the intriguing collegiate matchups available, and we're gonna be playing UK, USC, and Mizz for the 90th time in a row next year. Boring! We've played IU 2 times in over a century. I remember both. Conferences suck IMO.

Thanks for the response and you have some good ones. Specifically your conference realignment comment. I really had not thought about how much fun it would be to see more traditional powers play more often. I think as a Tennessee fan I am a little spoiled. Tennessee always mans up every year and gets a good non-SEC game. Next year is Oklahoma for example. But more games like that would be a blast and could replace the boring UT Chattanooga games. Don't get me me wrong, I love my Mocs, but if that game were against a USC or Texas that could be pretty exciting.

I think with the targeting they should do something similar to the flagrant 1 and flagrant 2 fouls in basketball, meaning you can have a certain type of targeting that doesnt result in ejection.

Yeah, you're probably right. But another question would be the ability of a teams fans to really travel to 3 far away places. Then again, Bowls are 2/3 empty most the time anyway.

I actually like the big gap until the finals. Bowl season filled the gap. And I never liked the idea of nearly a month to the semis and then only a week till the champ. I think NCAA should give it creative name (Super Bowlish), put it on Sat or Sunday, and make it national holiday worthy in the hype / concert / etc department. Every CFB fan I know watched that game, and only a few were CU fans. They need a big emotional video montage at the end of top moments from ALL the bowl games ending in extra finishing moments from the Semi & Finals, ala "One Shining Moment" in bball. That would tie fans of every school into the euphoria and nostalgia of the seasons finale'.

I actually like the big gap until the finals. Bowl season filled the gap. And I never liked the idea of nearly a month to the semis and then only a week till the champ. Make the first round of the 8 game playoffs a home game for higher seed.

I don't think you can put the game on Saturday because of the NFL playoffs. So, maybe just have the championship before the playoffs. Or if your going to do it on Monday, start the thing at 7 EST at the very least. It's too freaking late on a Monday night.

Yes yes yes on your one shining moment idea. Although, honestly, doing it for bowl games is kinda lame, IMO. Maybe I'm new fashioned, but I hate the bowls. I'd rather see a montage of big moments from the season. You know, like Alabama getting beat by Auburn.
