A, as in A heart attack for the bowl game. For the entire season I'll grade a B. If we'd won Ga. State and BYU also, I'd say an A-, but we didn't and our QB play is hard to watch, however the improvement of the defense is fantastic to see. Really hoping Chaney can help JG a LOT over the spring and summer. Love the kids heart but please release the ball a tad earlier!

Total season a "C". Continually playing JG and not trying to develop a younger QB and not playing Gray full time.

I agree with everything but playing Gray full time. He fumbled early in the season and was not blocking very well at all which is expected from a freshman rb. I do think they developed him nicely as the season wore and he will no doubt be the feature back next season.

The emergence of Eric Gray makes me wonder if Ty Chandler transfers out for his senior season

I think a C+ is reasonable.

Losses against Georgia St & BYU were totally on the coaches and horrible QB play didn’t help either. Those losses will never be forgivable.

Winning against an descent Indiana team in the Gator Bowl was a nice way to end the season.

However, I’d like to see Pruitt handle the QB situation better next year.

JG is a fighter and I have respect for him sticking it out this long but he won’t ever be an Elite QB that’ll get us to the next level. He pretty much is what he is. Pruitt needs to recognize this by now & fast.

I’m liking what I’m seeing from Pruitt so far but I’m not ready to crown him as our savior just yet. There’s still plenty more room for improvement.

The season as a whole from me gets a C.
Ga St: F (1)
BYU: D (2)
Chattanooga: B (4)
UF: F (1)
UGA: D (2)
Miss St: B (4)
Bama: C (3)
S. Carolina: A (5)
UAB: B (4)
UK: B (4)
Mizzou: C (3)
Vandy: B (4)
IU: B (4)
Total: 41
Average: 3.15 which is a C
*** used a (1-5) grading system with 1 being an F and 5 being an A.

Finishing 7-1 was just absolutely amazing!

Including Bama the Vols only allowed 17.25 points per game over their last 8 (if this was the yearly average this would be 11th in the nation). Gave up a total of 138 in last 8 games.
Bama returns a JG fumble 100 yards for TD and 7.
Mizzou turns a Jordan fumble into a FG for 3.
Vandy turns a JG INT Into a FG for 3.
IU turns a JG INT into a FG for 3.
IU returns a JG INT for TD and 7.
***Of the 138 points given up 23 came from the O giving the ball away. 16.67%

Only 115 points were allowed over the last 8 games by the Defense when normal change of possession occurred. 14.375 points per game. That's top 10 in the country type defensive numbers. Just impressive!

Vols went into the bowl game 29th in the nation allowing 21.7 per game for the entire season and gave up 22 to IU right on our average.

Vols went into the bowl game allowing 337.1 yards per game for the entire season which was 28th in the nation. IU gained 303 yards just about a 10% improvement for the Vol D. IU was averaging 432.8 yards per game for the season coming in. The 303 was their second lowest of the year. Only Ohio St held IU to less total yards.

Over the last 8 the Defense gets an A and is the main reason for the team success. The goalline stand against UK was awesome which came on a possession for UK due to a fumbled handoff exchange. Offense still has work to do in the redzone and limiting costly turnovers. Only 32 teams in the country scored the same or less than the Vols per game and only 3 of those are in the SEC. Still the O gets a C over the last 8.

Vols O for the year played some really bad halves of football.
1. Ga St 2nd half: 2 turnover on downs, 1 INT and 1 fumble. (JG)
2. BYU 2nd half: 1 pick 6 thrown and a turnover on downs. Only scored 3 points for the half. (JG)
3. UF: the entire game (JG)
4. UGA 2nd half: 1 int, 1 fumble returned for TD 1 turnover on down and scored 0 points. (BM)
5. Bama 2nd half: 1 fumble returned for TD and only scored 3 points. (JG)
6. UK 1st half: only scored 3 points and had a penalty to end the half and take away a FG attempt. (BM)
7. IU 1st half: 1 int and 1 turn over on downs. Only put up 6 points with first 3 possessions making it to the redzone. (JG)

Of 26 halves in the season the Vols played 8 of them very poorly to a grade of F.
JG played in 19 halves and had 6 grade an F. 31.58%
BM played in 5 halves and had 2 grade an F. 40%
JT played in 2 and had 0 grade an F.
**did my best on calculations of QB per halves not an exact science. Don't @ me bruh!

What is proven is that JG has a better percentage of not getting F's slightly but he also had way less success against our top opponents of UF, UGA and Bama where BM outscored JG in all 3 games and they played roughly the same amount during the 3 games just not equally per each game.
UF: JG = 0 / BM = 3
UGA: JG = 0 /BM = 14
BAMA: JG = 6 / BM = 7
Total: JG = 6 / BM = 24

The Vols are coming back and the defense leads the way. Just wanted to put together some breakdown that puts us where we already knew we were. Just a consistent slightly above average QB away from a 10+ win season. Improve the QB play (regardless of who steps up to do it) and this team should have great success in 2020.

Happy New Year!
Go Vols

I want to ask a question as I am curious as to what you all would answer and I think influences the seasonal grade.

Who was the 4th best opponent Tennessee played after Florida, Georgia and Alabama?

If every game was a grade:

D- Georgia St
C- BYU
B+ Chattanooga
F Florida
D+ Georgia
B+ Mississippi St
C+ Alabama
A- South Carolina
B+ UAB
B Kentucky
B- Mizzou
B+ Vanderbilt
B- Indiana

Overall - B- due to the 7-1 finish, and marked improvement...

Kentucky with Indiana being a close 5th.

I agree and that’s one of the reasons I asked.

The shocking thing is that not only is the answer Kentucky....I don’t think it’s even close (yes, I know Miss State and S.Carolina beat Kentucky)
What’s your point?

What’s your point?

My point is that I would lower him a letter grade because the schedule screams 10-3 (maybe 9-4 because a better season gets a better bowl and better bowl opponent)

But, despite winning to end the season the only game I thought they really looked good in was South Carolina.

I’d go B- with the record because it’s what I thought they would do before the season, but C- seems more appropriate.
