WKU got the ball to the 40 with :03 left and decided 57 yards was too far to kick it so they left the offense on the field for a Hail Mary. There was some confusion and a short delay about when the ball was ready for play and when they started the play clock over, Helton ran his FG unit onto the field, waited a few seconds for Western Michigan to start substituting and immediately ran his offense back out. There were guys everywhere running on and off the field and they threw the Hail Mary and it looked like it was going to OT until they reviewed the play and flagged the defense for illegal participation. That moved it to the 35 and the WKU kicker drilled it from 52 yards to win.
