Realistic expectations for H. Bailey (Merged)

Just a heads up, but I feel we need to slow down with our expectations for Bailey coming on to campus and being QB1 on day one. The kid throws an elite ball, no question, but he also holds onto the ball for a long time and takes sacks and he is prone to throw interceptions.

No doubt that can all be corrected, but I'm telling you, he is a work in progress as I've seen him play multiple times. You can't simply look at stats because 1. That's not a true indicator of how a player's game translates to the next level and 2. a LOT of his throws were either perimeter throws to exceptional athletes or short passes to a generational talent in Gilbert.

I really think he can be the guy one day, I just don't think there's anyway shape or form he comes into the current QB room and leap frogs any of those guys in short order, Shrout included... To me, great thing about all of this is that he isn't needed right away and he can get a year or two in Coach Chaney's system.

All these guys saying he will be starting next year need to watch the first half of his state championship game. He is good but will be behind all three currently on campus.

Whixh isnt a knock on him as they are older and have a year of weight room and playbook experience.

He may pass some of them up before the year is over but i will have to see it to believe it.

I think one of the current quarterbacks will transfer out

Watching his highlight reel HB is literally the biggest dude on the field at all times. He towers over the opposing team. Ball game is gonna be a bit different in college though.

We have enough talent in the QB room to get through the first half of the season without Bailey needing to start. I am hopeful that he is the starter in 2021-2023. Between JG, Hill and Mauer we have good QBs where we shouldn’t need him to start at the beginning.

VOLS will be undefeated going into the Bama game. JG will start and play well to that point. CJP will insert HB at half time. VOLS will comeback and win. HB will start the rest of the year. We will play Bama again in the SECCG and beat them AGAIN!!!

I can't forget that JG was 0 for 7 to start the Vanderbilt game. I would hope that one of the other experienced qb's will take over next year. I also would not be surprised to see Jg transfer to another school for his senior year. What ever happens, I will be rooting for nothing but success for the team next year.

If you sit him two years, he'll be playing for someone else in year two. I've watched him 2 years now while living in Dville, GA. Has the build and arm of Peyton with the head of Casey. He'll be playing starting QB on The Hill next year before the season is out IMO. He IS needed right away, our best QB returning as an upper classman literally took a potential win over Bama out of this team's hands, lost to BYU and Ga State and played well only in spurts down the stretch.

Get over it; the team did. Further, anyone who lays GSU and BYU only at his feet just has an axe to grind.

I think it wise to temper expectations for a rookie QB.
I don't expect the statue of him until his Soph year.
I don't expect the statue to become a Hajj-like pilgrimage that Montana, Favre, Manning, and Brady walk around in a trance for days until his mid-Junior season.

Let's not put too much pressure on the lad.

Let me preface this for the JG snowflakes: JG seems like a good kid. Smart, tough as a brick,, and great character. He is a VFL in my book for his determination alone. He just isn't a good SEC QB.

That said, unless HB shows up as a complete work in progress, if they trot JG out there, the fans interest level will plummet from his first late-thrown ball that results in our WR being decapitated, or a 134mph dump pass. With him as the starter, we are in for another 7-5 season, maybe 6-6.

If we start HB, and he makes the same freshman mistakes JG is likely to make, the fans will be more patient, even with the same results.

He will RS and compete for the starting job in 2021.

I think he will play in 4 games to gain experience for 2021. I think CJP will RS him in 2020.
I’m Ratvol and I approve this message.

We are due for a 4* QB to actually show up and be as advertised. So yeah, I’m hoping Bailey comes out balling from the get go and takes charge. I want to see somebody absolutely run away with the job and never look back.

Best case scenario is JG takes another step forward. Bailey redshirts. We win 9-10 games, and finish with a top ten class. That would set us up for a great 2021.

Under your scenario with an inexperienced QB in 2021. If JG is not able to produce an offense that consistently scores next season we ought to cut our losses early with him IMO. We ought to know what kind of JG we have on hand early in the OU game AND IF HB has surpassed the others bring him into the season early over JG to get him the experience so 2021 is special.

If I were a betting man I’d say JGs leash is as short as anyone’s next season. 50% of me believes that because HB is signed now and there’s no more need to act like JG is the best we have. The other 50% believes that JP made JG a promise in the off season to do everything he can to get him to the next level. Being the southern boy he is his word is his bond. In that case I can see JGs leash being a bit longer .

I have a feeling this very discussion was going on about 26 years ago. ;)

25 years ago, yes, but not 26. Shuler was thoroughly entrenched as the starting quarterback in 1993; he came in second behind Charlie Ward in the vote for the Heisman Trophy.

If JG starts off shaky I could see Harrison Bailey quarterbacking the Vols by Mid Season.

People act like we are the only rabid fan base. All da bases would be after any QB after a few bad games.......

I agree, we are no different as a fan base, It's the 20/80 percent rule.
20% will accentuate bad to really bad, the rabid and..... in a game debate of a loss or poor play
20% will accentuate the good to great, the non-revolt ....in a game debate of a win or a great play
and they're is...
60% of the silent to even keel fans that wait to speak and research...in a game win or lose
The true statement is all are needed for a program to stay relevant and on top
nothing worse than a apathetic fan base, strive for excellence
