The Impeachment Thread

More conjecture
Based on established facts as we know them about Donald Trump. Trump kept Scott Pruitt on as EPA Administrator long after it was apparent that Pruitt was guilty of self-dealing and that he was wasting tax payer money. Other corrupt members of Trump's cabinet include, but are not limited to: Tom Price, Ryan Zinke, Wilbur Ross and Elaine Chao. Trying to convince anyone that Trump cares about self-dealing and corruption is a tough sell... Trying to convince anyone that Trump cares about nepotism is an even tougher sell... and do we need to talk about Ivanka Trump's trademarks in China? No, I didn't think so.

And I actually agree on most of those things. But the reasons for this impeachment are theoretically based on this conversation. So I’m trying to stick with this conversation.

And as you may have guessed, there is a part of the July 25th transcript that has been completely lost amid the questions over bribery and quid-pro-quo but I think merits some attention... Donald Trump not only clearly does believe the CrowdStrike theory, but he was trying to get Zelensky to look for the DNC server. That is straight up Russian propaganda and Trump believes every word of it. There is something wrong with him. This is the President of the United States.... and he is crazy.

It's an impossible sell. Trying to say someone who is corrupt cares about corruption is laughable at best. If Trump was worried about corruption he'd resign.

Corruption in politics is probably another @luthervol continuum. Or better off a bell shaped curve. Trump certainly pegs the needle at one end, but I think we’d all be disappointed in how most people currently “serving” are probably within a standard deviation of him.

...and the Trump people complaining that Hunter Biden got a high paying job overseas just because of his dad? Seriously? I don't like it either but where is the self-awareness here? Ivanka Trump and her China trademark deals have made her more money than what Hunter Biden was paid by Burisma Holdings.

Trump will win nearly all of the Southern states, including Tennessee. The Bolshevik candidate will win perhaps three counties in Tennessee.
Rural Tennessee has never been known for it's intellectual prowess. Actually it's right up there with Mississippi and Alabama as a beacon of ignorance.

Huh? She was granted trademarks in China based on applications she filed in 2016. Please help me understand how she has made money based simply on the trademarks being approved.

You cannot place any monetary value on the trademarks at this time as she is no longer a part of the brand.

She was granted these trademarks in 2016 and 2017.

"Trump removed herself from the company when she entered the White House as her father’s adviser in 2017, but was forced to close the brand in June 2018 due to declining sales and continuing questions of conflicts of interest."

Ivanka Trump’s Brand Received Five New Trademarks From China This Month

Notice she was concerned about conflict of interest, much unlike another person.

As a whole, I'd put rural Tennesseans up against a cross section of your urban "elite" any day. There are a lot of urban smart asses that couldn't manage a day without the services provided them. I'll pick somebody who can manage a simple chore like changing a tire over an opinionated urban millennial any day of the week.

Dang..what an insult. He realize he is on a TN forum?

China granted approval for a total of 16 trademarks for fashion accessories and other items to Ivanka Trump even though she had announced that she was shutting the business down. The approvals did not go through the usual three month period.

Trademarks are just a way to protect brands. Big deal. She is no longer a part of the brand.
You would almost think Trump would encourage Chinese trade...oops.

Kinda boggles the mind that they would go there. The funny part is that as opposed to political families with business ties seemingly related to political position, the Trump family businesses were all established before he got a job in politics. It seems a bit weird to have someone at the top level of government these days who successfully made a living at an honest job before becoming an elected politician. Lawyers do not equal honest jobs BTW. For the record, I don't consider real estate speculation all that reputable either.

The quid-pro-quo bit was dropped and changed to obstruction so it wouldn't entangle Biden.

There was never going to be an article of impeachment on "quid-pro-quo". That isn't necessarily something wrong. There was discussion that there could be an article of impeachment alleging "bribery", evidently that was decided against in lieu of the broader charge of "abuse of power". I don't think that decision had anything to do with Joe Biden.

What consequences, if any, should there be when McConnell, Graham, and the others who have already claimed they *won't* be impartial jurors are sworn in?

"The key to the system working as it should is the understanding that the Senate as a court of impeachment is a different institution than the Senate as usual. When the Senate moves to become an impeachment court, senators take a new oath. At that moment the institution transforms itself.

That’s why, according to Article I, section 3, clause 6 of the Constitution, senators, when sitting on a trial of impeachment, “shall be on Oath or Affirmation.” Of course, when elected to the Senate, all senators swear an oath to uphold the Constitution. But the senators, when sitting as a court, are asked to take an additional oath. It is a juror’s and judge’s oath—not a legislator’s oath.

Rule XXV of the Senate Rules in Impeachment Trials provides the text: “I solemnly swear (or affirm) that in all things appertaining to the trial of ____, now pending, I will do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws, so help me God.”

How Will Republican Senators Honor Their Impeachment Oaths?
LOL. So those that are running to take his job will be impartial? GTFO.

If there's any insight that I've learned from Trump's "adventures in presidenting", it's the gullibility of the general public.

Gaslighting really works.

It's an amazing human psychological condition to see otherwise perfectly normal, reasonable people brought to heel by an unrelenting, false, parallel reality of facts.

Shocking, amazing, and confounding all rolled into one.

I truly believe that such cult of personality is exactly what fueled the insanity of 1930's Germany. With 20/20 hindsight, it's obvious now how stupid, hateful and abhorrent it all was. But at the time, the rise of hate-mongering nationalism was likely a source of pride for many.

Hope we don't go down that rabbit hole as a nation...
Did I comment on what a great post this was?

The fact you have to use “broader” in hopes of encapsulating a charge, is not only ridiculous, it’s patently disingenuous. Either you have the orange dotard, or you don’t. It’s kind of like being pregnant, there is no in-between. WTF does “abuse of power” even mean? Exactly, you don’t know, other than spinning a web of BS about a phone call that seems to only turn up, at best, third or fourth hand information.

“Show me the man, and I’ll show you the crime.”
