I can see it if there’s a playoff involved, having an issue with this, but I don’t really have a big problem with it for regular bowl games. I’d definitely give a pass to Trey Smith if he decided wanted to enter the draft, and forego his senior season... I’d have zero problem with him skipping the bowl, with all he’s been through. We don’t really have any other hi-potential draft guys, so bowl games are more of an audition, and therefore wouldn’t anticipate anyone opting out...in my opinion.
Has there been any news on Trey entering the draft?

I agree it sucks. But honestly if you had a chance to risk tens of millions of dollars on a freak accident you wouldn't think about it? I loved every team I played for, but MILLIONS on the line? I really don't know what I'd do if I'm being honest with myself.

Trying to remember the player last year (I think) who was a high draft pick but played in his teams bowl game. His comment was when ask if he was sitting out to protect his "investment". "Oh heck no. I'm just not wired that way and I really don't understand a true competitor feeling any other way"...anyone remember who that was? Seems it was a running back.

I remember that. Fairly recent; like maybe 2 years ? And a Bigtime player.

Terrible injuries happen anytime. I’m just saying football is a brotherhood. You fight all season long with the men out there on the field with you. To bail on them just because it’s the last game of the year is selfish.

Yep. Especially when you leave a guy with a bad ankle in ; leading 35-7.

An easy decision to make for us keyboard warriors, aint it?

I've known a lot of guys who put a lot more on the line than just a big payday, for their teammates. FOR their teammates.

Seems to me there are two kinds of people in this thread: those who really get, deep in their bones, what it's like to be a part of a strong team...and those who don't feel it.

Not saying one group is better than the other, but there are clearly two different backgrounds at play among us.

Go Vols!

Well done high draft pick who played in the bowl game because he’s a competitor. This idea of sitting out and looking out for number one is a reflection of today’s society. Just read a book about the greatest generation in WWII. They never sat out and didn’t stop until the mission was complete. Ok. Here it comes- waiting for the response ‘ok boomer’ (millennials think boomers are everyone over 30 right?😉)

Why not sit the whole season out then? How is there any more risk in the bowl game vs the 12 regular season games they play in?

Was it Saquon Barkley?

If this skip a bowl trend continues why not add the last regular season game if your team can’t win a conference title and can’t make a good bowl?

Why not the last couple regular season games if that’s the case?

To me it’s dumb.
Or the first couple, if they can't win their conference?

so silly millions of dollars > a meaningless bowl game. The seniors are going to play because it can help their draft stock. If you are a blue chip 1st or 2nd rounder you can and probably should skip it unless its a playoff game.

If it were meaningless, 50,000+ Vol fans wouldn't show up to the game!

College Football players are there for several reasons: a deep down love of the game and their school (especially Tennessee), for their teammates that they will never get to play together with again, leaving the program better than when they arrived, another chance to impress the scouts, and a chance to improve skills and experience with the extra practices.

Plus it is a reward for all their hard efforts. They are treated well on bowl week and have fun.

Good for recruiting too, especially the numerous and talented local kids in Florida.

Might as well do that in combat too. This battle is meaningless, they are just attacking Canada, we can sit this one out!

Even 1 and dones in basketball play their last game. Your argument is invalid.

It shows they are in it for themselves alone. They wouldnt be a high draft pic if not for the exposure the school was responsible for them having. Only ones I agree on not participating are those with injuries already. If this trend continues u will see more and more drop out of regular season games toward the end of season. Such as a minor injury, not feeling well.

If they choose not to play do they travel with the team to the bowl game? For all the festivities? I don't know, but if they are able to play and choose not to; they should not be allowed to travel with the team

Bowl games are not exhibition games. Exhibition games don't count towards a teams record (preseason NFL).

Just my opinion, but if a bowl is so meaningless, why get excited or make it a goal to get to one?

It matters.

Again, just my opinion.

I’m sure it was pretty important to the seniors. But hey they’re meaningless to some.

The Tenn. Vandy game was meaningless too; are they gonna skip it. What the hell just skip the whole season.
If you can’t see the difference between beating candy after losing to them for 3 years as a senior and beating Indiana when your draft stock is cemented (which is not the case for any of our guys) i can’t help you

Would sitting out against Vandy hurt their draft stock?
