They probably wouldn't shoot them until they attacked their kids. I'm not sure folks realize how vicious hogs can be.
Depending on where you live hogs are the ultimate vermina non grata and engage them with lethal force at any opportunity. I have relatives in TX and the only good hog is a dead one. I have one cousin that had a bit of a close call with a couple hogs and while his lever 30-30 was enough at the time he wasn't thrilled at the margin for error factor. He upgraded to EL's favorite firearm for the job.
