Reality of Our Situation

I don’t think anyone has forgotten how the season started.

I for one am not claiming “we are back”. But for the state of the program, ripping off 5 in a row and being competitive with Bama (albeit without Tua), is no small feat.

It’s obvious Pruitt is still going through some new HC growing pains. But I like this staff and things appear to be moving in the right direction. That is something I was certainly not saying back in Sept and early Oct.

I remember this being said a few times during the Jones years.
Well I had the privilege to be there during coach Jones several times during summer workouts during spring practices and once during season practice. I had many connections to that regime. There is a big difference now. It's all about Football and not being satisfied and not letting the players you recruited and promised run your program.

When all else fails, reference what unnamed people said during the Jones and Dooley years. I think your type said the same thing to those who still believed we could make a bowl after the poor start.

I’m curious, do you think this season was better than the ‘14, ‘15’ or ‘16 season under Jones?

I honestly did not think we would make a bowl after the way we started the season. There were many like me who thought that way.

Maybe it is just that I am a realist or maybe even a Debbie Downer. However, I have read many posts over the past couple of weeks that seem to have me feeling we are elite again.

The reality of our situation is this:

We are 7-5; not 10-2 or even 9-3 but a seven win team. Those seven wins are against very bad teams with one of those teams (UAB) not having a single impressive win. On top of that, we got beat by Ga State and BYU!

On getting beat by BYU and Ga State as well as who we actually beat, we do not have a coach of the year coach! We, Tennessee fans, are very fond of two of our receivers this year. However, neither are going to win any awards or go in the first round or even the second of the NFL draft!

We had a record setting RB tonight. He set the record against a typical Vandy team with a losing record! In fact, the previous record was set against a Georgia team.

The REALITY is that you are completely WRONG!

You just cannot MOVE FORWARD and GROW UP when you are focused on the failures of the past. It's a LAW for LIFE.
This team kicked over the tombstones of the first 2 losses and used them as stepping stones for winning 70% of their remaining games.
There are no skilled sailors developed upon calm seas.

THEY NEVER QUIT FIGHTING!

I'm just extremely happy that they refused to adopt your attitude.
Moreover, I'm glad CJP would not allow them to adopt that kind of attitude--it helps no one!

GO VOLS!

What is the W/L ratio of those remaining 70% of teams?

This isn't a "great" team by historical standards. It certainly doesn't really warrant comparison to other teams, unless it's the 88 team that won their final six games. (I'd love to follow up this year with a repeat of the 89 season, though)

I didn't think we'd make a bowl, either, if I'm being honest. That wasn't really my point.

It doesn't matter!!

Why don't you go back to 1988 and look at the W/L records of the teams we beat to finish up '88 with a record of 5-6?
We went on to an 11-1 season in 1989 with the only loss to Alabama.
I guess the in '89 you were still stuck on stupid as you looked back at the 0-6 start to 1988's season.

You're just STUCK ON STUPID--and it needs to be said so you can read it and OWN IT!
People like you are mired in mediocrity for an entire LIFE!

Message boards like this give you opportunity to BROADCAST your stupidity.
You ought to just SHUT UP and LOOK HARD AT THE MAN IN THE MIRROR!

The United States would not even be a nation if the men who fought in the Revolutionary war would've had your attitude.
What if Abraham Lincoln would have had your attitude?
What if Churchill had adopted your attitude?

Those GREAT MEN could have and--ACCORDING TO YOUR THOUGHT PROCESSES--should have laid down and quit
because NOTHING could undo the misery of much adversity and defeats they had suffered in their lives.

So you dont buy in to this is an "elite" team straw man.

You have to take into consideration that we lost most of our major NFL Talent that came with those 14-16 teams! CJP had to pull us from the depths of Hades and has gotten us back to level playing Ground in year 2. If we win our bowl game against a Michigan or Penn State team oh, I would say we have had a very successful season, regardless of the Georgia state and BYU losses.

Is this a license to start bumping old threads to remind everyone what was said?

When we have break out, record setting performances against teams who are ranked and we win those games, then COY honors and All-American statuses can be proclaimed.

On to maintaining the Butch standard in beating lesser quality teams at the end of the season and then beating some over ranked Iowa, Nebraska or whichever the over ranked bowl opponent we have!

5-3 in conference so the Butch argument doesn’t really hold up imo. He would’ve lost (at least) 2 of those games, probably more, with this team.

Always expect us to compete. But not lose to Ga State and/or BYU. And, as the season played out, the end season wins are not impressive.
If you are not happy with the 2nd half of the season then maybe you should transfer your fandom to Clemson, Ohio State or LSU. Goodbye.
