Vanderbilt post game random thoughts:

  • If you want an idea of how much this team has grown from week one to yesterday - juxtapose how the team responded to the opening game turnover deep in Vol territory to GA State vs Vandy.

GA State out muscled us for a TD. Vandy lost yards before settling for a field goal.
  • I hate hate hate that the game was played in those conditions. Just the sentimental fan in me wanted these seniors to go out and have their day in the sun, literally and figuratively. If I could’ve scripted it, it’da been a warm, dry game with a packed/loud stadium with us chucking the ball all over the field. These guys deserved that.
  • I woke up early and rewatched the game. Kind of hard to do because outside of the second quarter, it really was a lackluster performance.
  • I can’t fault JG too much for his performance. The weather, emotions, and delays surely didn’t play in anyone’s favor. He was definitely off, but it was far less than ideal conditions.
  • Which begs the question - wtf was with our offensive game plan early. I love me some Chaney - but last night was a head scratcher early.
  • JGs interception - he got the ball out late. That said, terrible job of Palmer not working his way back to the ball. He could’ve played that more aggressively.
  • The JG shovel pass to DWA was impressive and fun to watch... but it was all caused by a terrible Tim Jordan block. He basically just let the linebacker run right by him after just a glancing “block.” To his credit, he did redeem himself slightly by hustling after the shovel pass and providing a block that allowed DWA to gain another 3-5 yards.
  • DWA trucked a dude at the end of that play too. Drive ended with the DWA touchdown where he ran a great route. JG looked off the safety and DWA went into a window basically between three stoned defenders.
  • The 94 yard touchdown was caused by Carvin and Wright. They opened a gaping hole. Cedric Tillman provided a convoy. Eric Gray burst through with speed we haven’t seen at the position in a while. #3 went untouched.
  • Defense was salty most of the night. They were fun to watch. The vandy QB was disinterested. For a kid who has thrown over 9k yards in his career, he looked like a deer in the headlights freshman.
  • Glad we got to see one more (at least) Jennings beast mode run after the catch. I’m not sure what will come from the late game fight. Do I think he stepped on the kids head on purpose? No. But do I think it was foolish to get in that scuffle and rip his helmet off? Yes. I love me some JJ but that was a weird sequence and seemed completely unnecessary.
  • Jerome Carvin had his best performance since he’s been here IMO.
  • Ironic that on senior night, it was mostly freshman who stole the night. Gray had a record performance. Roman Harrison and Quavaris Crouch record sacks. Darnell Wright is killing guys in the run game. Our future is bright.
A passing of the torch so to speak.

I'd say leave it at 4 teams, to "preserve the importance of the regular season"...
*If the regular season wasn't 90% boring garbage.

It's just the super teams from each conference, rolling thru their schedule. The only drama being a team so bored, they don't even show up.
Outside of the Iron bowl, all I heard from the playoffs was which team's 40+ point win, looked more impressive. So whatever gets more watchable FB, I'm for.

Football forum sucks
Those guys bitching about winning 7 bc the teams sucked
Well last few years we’ve sucked and have been losing to the muschamps, vandys, mizzous, etc.....
Improvement is not hard to see
We only got our asses handed to us twice this year
Next year florida and uga will be a lot closer imo
Fulmer is our AD, what more do they want, he’s gonna make the best decisions we’ve had made from an AD in forever. Let’s hope he’s AD for another 20+ years
Most of the teams we beat were SEC teams. We were already betting underdogs in 4 of the games.

Man, you know the real reason a lot of those guys are on there.

Pick any name from the merry band of pot stirrers and go back to preseason. "I'd be happy if we could just beat Vandy, first". And guaranteeing we wouldn't win all 5 of those SEC games.

Goal posts move so fast over there, they probably have speeding tickets.

Carvin is a starting G next season with Kennedy coming back. As HoleInTheRoof posted, he had quite the night and has really come on in the second half. Locklear has Richmond Disease, so let's move on from him. Overall they've got maulers up front. Trey Smith - wow. With some of the formations they announce they are going to cram it down your throat and you will not stop it. Some great counter and trap block scheming by Chaney. Old school kick azz. Many games are won with strong O-lines and TOP.

JG may be a QB who simply cannot grip the ball well in wet weather. Like Vandy's. So they did it in a safer way that led to the break out by Gray, which was awesome. Chaney saw some more of what to work on with JG, but JG did not stop competing.

Good to see DWA get some valuable use and perform well. He did some quality blocking as well. JJ wanted the ball on senior night against a nemesis. When he didn't get it much he got even more agitated. He will get "counseled" in the NFL to channel it. Callaway remained the consummate professional he is. Palmer will be like Callaway next season.

CJP/Ansley devised D schemes this season that were more 'bend don't break'. Probably due to a lack of depth more than a lack of playmakers. It gets irritating to watch at times, but has worked. When you do that you lose TOP in many games and in truth, TOP is not as big of deal with all of the wide open O's there are today. My point is I saw Louisville attempt to do the same thing we did against UK. Bad decision since they do not have our type players on D. They honored the receivers with too many defenders against a team with a crap passing attack. We have been doing the same thing at times. Maybe it's intentional and they are developing players during games. I hope that is it, however, it does kill TOP and Chaney gets less possessions to score the ball. I just hate seeing a horrible Vandy O and other one dimensional opponent O's holding the ball that many snaps.

I don't know how many times I heard "let's worry about beating Candy first" and then Mizzou and SC.

Texas is depleted on defense(secondary) and they are down to 3rd string at running back.
They have lots of shoulder injuries and catch phrases. Sound familiar? Herman is just a slightly better version of butch. Infallible system and a refusal to adjust when it doesn't work. Check. Rash of injuries that seem less about bad luck and more about how they're coached. Check. Getting outcoached in games you should win on the reg. Check.

Spot on.

What are catch phrase injuries?

College kids shouldn't play that many games? Hahaha but only the pansies in d1 shouldn't? Fcs and d3 play that many games. Such a weak argument.
I too have always thought that was the stupidest argument the anti-playoff crowd makes considering ever division but D1 has one..

Just say you don't like it because of tradition or whatever..nothing wrong with that, I disagree with it, but I respect it.

I have ALWAYS hated that there was no playoffs, and while four teams is better than none...it is not enough. I think 16 is too many. The conference champs already serve that purpose...

Eight is perfect imo...

Tillman looked faster than I expected on that play too.

Another that doesn’t need to go unnoticed:

Trey smith came to TN as the #1 player in the country and you can make the case he’s the best guard in CFB. Really hard to live up to that hype and he did it through far more difficult personal circumstances, a toxic culture, and a coaching change. Well done.
Well done for sure. He embodies what it means to be a football player. We were so blessed to have him here. All the best to Trey.
