The tone towards Ubben changed with his tweet suggesting Tennessee was profiting from the bullying t-shirt sales and should have done more for the student. It’s clear that the University has done everything there to the best of their ability including donations to anti bullying and a full scholarship for the boy, and that knowledge was available at the time... which surely a reporter could find if he desired to

Not sure there has been a retraction of his take on that

Hey guys, to each his own. If you want to not pay attention to the entire body of work I've done, that's fine. We have a Black Friday sale going on today and I tweeted out about 15 of our best-selling stories in the past year or so. If you want to get mad about one that's more explanatory than negative, that's fine. If you want to get mad about a couple cherry-picked tweets pulled out of context, that's fine. But it's also intellectually dishonest.

This is my Twitter account. I tweeted a bunch of stories this morning our readers loved that if you haven't subscribed, you've missed this year. People on this board who want to feed off tweets they think are too negative can do so if they please. Get angry about me being "too negative" if you want. But I don't really care about writing "positive" or "negative" stories. I care about writing stories that allow our readers to learn new things. I hope you'll check us out and not play the outrage groupthink game. Thanks!
You are insufferable

David, this fanbase generally doesn't mind "negative" stories about the program, or stories that aren't 100% positive and uplifting or whatever. Hell, we rehash our decade of mediocrity on here weekly. The reason you have a bad reputation on here is because you started piling on when the season looked lost after appearing to be a neutral and objective reporter before that happened. It looked like a cheap "betrayal" to get clicks, draw the ire of an easily provoked fanbase, and boost your standing in the sportswriting world by increasing your followers, RTs, etc. Unfortunately, we've been an easy and common target for journalists who do that in recent years.
@David Ubben Focus on this one. He put it better than I did.

Did @David Ubben ever recant?

Glad to see that in my absence over the last almost week or so that VN hasn't changed one bit when it comes to overreactions. Lol happy basketball game day and pre-football game day, y'all.

Fox sports Knox are the best
Cause Ubben has written a lot of really good content. His stories on Pruitts background for example are the best I’ve read from any media source in Knoxville. I can appreciate his good stuff while having disdain for his jabs that he takes at times. He’s nowhere near as bad as KNS that brings up every negative story they can think of as often as possible
KNS is a full-fledged Fifth Column. It's not sportswriting. There's nothing like it in ANY university town in America.

The other day, I was warming up outside the rack for about 40 minutes because squats can be tricky for me. This dude was in the rack in the beginning and finished his last set as I finished mine in another rack.

Wait how are you working out at my gym? Happens all the time.

Don’t really understand the Ubben hate. I enjoy reading his in depth reporting. It’s interesting that many that show disdain for him are pointing to his negativity towards the program when things weren’t looking great. Not a chance he was more negative after BYU than what I read on this very board.

He is a journalist, not a PR rep for the university. The reporting of news and how it is interpreted has become so twisted in this country over the past few years. It has nothing to do with the truth and everything to do with if what is being said aligns with the reader’s opinion.

@David Ubben You seemed to take a nasty turn when we were down. I for one OTOH like some of your recent tweets and I'm hoping you understand what I'm trying to say, because I wouldn't waste my breath if I didn't think you could turn it around. There are several (who shall go unnamed) who it wouldn't pay to speak with. Good luck this weekend with your work!
He has a very punchable face...jus sayin 🤷‍♂️
