Very disappointed with the OL last night. They took a step back and that DL kicked their ass
We came in knowing their DL was extremely disruptive and we were missing a few key guys, but yeah it wasn't a great night for them.

But if you're gonna get beat, let it be during a 30-0 beatdown. Lessons learned the hard way, get guys back and healthy and I think they're fine.

And some relative context to last year. Still building off of this level of OL play leftover from the former regime:

A down night for the OL in 2019:
39 carries, 121 yards: 3.1 YPC
Top rusher (Chandler): 85 Yards 5.3 YPC

A down night for the 2018 OL (Charlotte):
26 carries, 20 yards: .77 YPC
Top rusher (Banks): 24 yards 2.2 YPC

UAB post game random thoughts....

  • Won't have much because honestly, last night wasn't much of a memorable game... whole thing just felt meh.
  • Hot take: Bryce Thompson is a ball hawk. Actually... I just looked on UTSports.com and noticed he last night was his only three int's of the year. For whatever reason, I thought he had 1-2 others this year. But at any rate, with his coverage and with how effective he is blitzing... he's establishing himself as one of our best players.
  • Darrell Taylor has been more consistent the past few weeks. Would be nice to see him notch another 4 sacks just to get to double digits for the year. Had one last night and looked real close to at least two others.
  • When DT does leave, I think Kivon Bennett might be a guy who can step up and alleviate some of our pass rush woes. I don't how good he'll ultimately be, but I do know that he continues to flash.
  • Same for Middleton ..... for all the talk of him being soft and, well, even I saying earlier this season that I wished we didn't take him in the class because he was a non-factor.... he really seems to have embraced being a defensive lineman. I mean, when you look at his stats on the UTsports website, they're pretty mediocre.. but sometimes stats don't tell the whole story. All I know is that he seems to be in the frame a lot whenever a TFL or sack is made.
  • I wasn't there obviously, and I know they didn't have the best film crew/equipment (and the announcers were trash) so i don't know how the atmosphere at the game actually was - but I know it (at least to me) felt lifeless watching it on TV. They'd pan to the crowd a lot on UAB third downs and people wouldn't even be making noise. A lot of people looked bored. I wonder if someone who was at the game would agree with that.
  • You know you're hosting a big time TE target when you're throwing the ball to Andrew Craig and Jacob Warren. I don't think we did a very good job showcasing the TE position for Washington. I think the VQ podcast said of our 13 completions, 6 went to the TE's.
  • I don't think JG should've played as much as he did last night. I don't think it was particularly fair to him, being six days off of surgery, in a cold weather game. Once we took the double digit lead and the UAB offense showed itself to be a s lifeless as it was, I think we should've stuck with Shrout. JMO.
  • OL looked like trash for the first time in a long time.
  • Eric Gray might've hit the proverbail freshman wall - which is kind of weird considering he hasn't played much. All I know is vs BYU and GA State, while he might not have picked up gaudy stats, he at least flashed elite quickness and change of direction skills.
  • I'm as bored writing this as I was watching the game.

It was definitely one of the calmest (and smallest) crowds of the year, but the janky offense, and lack of real competition really doesn't help. There was some noise in the first half, but most of that was gone by the second. I thought the noise was decent in the first half considering the crowd size.

I think there would have been a little more noise if not for the barrage of field goals. But the 53-yarder was cool.

It’s exciting that our entire DL comes back next year. Plus we get Gooden back. And we add Bailey, Hardy, Baron, Big O, and maybe Ox. That’s going to be a talented and deep room. And don’t forget JYD also
With the number of veteran guys returning and Gooden coming back to anchor, I see lots of RS opportunities for very talented guys. Muy bueno! This is what we need.

FSU and likely USC open? Urban Meyer bout to get paid.
He's not taking a job where he has to play FL and Clemson and even a future series with Alabama. Tennessee job is much much much too hard for Meyers; fsu is still too hard.

Addendum: Meyers knows USC job is easiest in the country with the whole advertising-media complex supporting you

@volatil None of this would have been possible without you and the staff at STR. Specifically you, since you were the one who posted it here first but then VN did what we do...we took care of our own when they were down. We did it for RichRollin, @chargervol and several others. That's what makes this board great.

What @Atlanta VOL did today was...I can't even describe. Holy crap y'all. Not only did he pitch in a TON for Ashlee, he gave me and my girls the best day I've ever had in Neyland. He's a helluva dude too. Super nice host, down to earth, good guy, great company, and made my family feel welcome. I'll never forget that.

AV, when we get the house built, you're getting an invite to the party that I'm throwing....might not rival yours but I can give it a shot. Plus, a good friend of mine is an award winning chef, I told him he has to cater....there will be a spread.

Anyway... I'll post more when I can, we just got home. Here isr Mrs. ob79 and my girls. Ashlee's the youngest.View attachment 235661
What a great picture of your family. Who knew that you had Pruitt eye brows :cool::cool:

I get not thinking JG is a great or good QB, but the reality is right now he also gives us maybe the best chance to win. Shrout throws a beautiful deep ball, but his decision making is not where it needs to be. Mauer when healthy has a different dynamic that’s worth continuing to explore.

JG has 7 screws put in his wrist and left the game up 30-0.

He has plenty of drawbacks but I do feel like he is giving it his all and trying to improve.

I wanna win and I don’t care if that means playing anyone at QB or any position.
Don't see how JG with a cast on is a better option than Maurer. Maybe Shrout, but if Maurer is healthy and we feel really safe for him, I think he's our best shot. He just has to turn down his INTs and I think Pruitt will roll with a healthy Maurer.

FSU is serious.

We’d let Taggart play out a few more years and be okay about it.

Agreed. It's easy to tell if a guy has things moving in the right direction in year two. I think Pruitt is showing it and we would actually be en route to a great season if we hadn't stumbled out of the gate. Taggart's Noles look bad, boring, and undisciplined and they aren't really improving. Easy call there.

FSU was a bit of mess when he took over but he’s been so bad. I was wrong about him.
