Do we have a five way quarterback controversy brewing next year?

Agree ,for some reason I've never really thought he was coming here .
His father said just last week that he's 100% committed to UT and no chance he'll bail on that commitment. We'll see but he sure sounds committed to us according to his father.

If we win out with him playing QB what will be said then? Lots of ifs there but if we win out and he's the starting QB at the end of the year I can't see him giving that up. Just saying he's gonna transfer because a handful of VN doesn't like him is not a very good reason I believe.

I hope Pruitt is a much better evaluater of qb talent than to continue to start jg at qb. jg has good stats on everything but what matters, he has trouble leading the team to points.

I would not mind rotating all 3 and see who has the hot hand. This will also create more defensive preparation for UAB.

And also much more game prep for ut as well, cause we use different offensive play calls with jg. with jg it is much more conservative plays, it's more wide open with maurer or shrout. More downfield passing with either of the these two.

Shrout may not be going anywhere and actually could be # 1 next year if the SC game is indicative of what he can do every week.
If Shrout doesn’t get any more meaningful in-game opportunities, then I wouldn’t blame him one bit for leaving. He looked very solid in the USCe game and deserves to get more opportunities regardless of Maurer.

You think it’s confined to VN? 😏
I think it's confined to arm chair couch potatoes that like to coach behind a keyboard!! :) Just kidding kinda ;). I think that he got labeled as a whiner early in his career and Vol fans have made him pay dearly for it every day since. I just personally believe he's not nearly as bad as made out to be and has as much potential if not more than any QB on the team currently. I believe we can win with him the rest of the year just as easily as the 2 Fr. and he's simply a VFL that has given all he can to date to our football program. Fans kicking him off the team and saying he's transferring because of his inconsistent play is frustrating for me to see as he's as much a leader of this team as anyone else. The kid is all Vol and I guess I don't understand why Vol fans would want him going somewhere else next year, some even going as far as to wanting him to just quit midseason.

I'm interested to see what JT brings to the table from here on out, but no, I think it will be between Bailey and Maurer. Hill will prob be brought in for injuries as a back-up option. Maurer and Bailey are just too deadly with their passes, touch, and ball-placement imo.

I think he'll stay regardless of getting more playing time or not. Only catch being unless W Ky comes calling and he could go and start there next year.

Hes gone. He graduates in December.
Maurer and Bailey will battle it out next year. Hill to back up those 2. Shrout may look elsewhere too. All JMO of course.
JG has already graduated. Hill is a transfer, so won't be eligible til next season. I think it's Maurers spot to lose. Bailey is awesome, no doubt, but if Maurer gets and stays healthy, he deserves to start and Bailey red-shirt.

It is a nice problem to have for fans to debate which QB will be #1 next year. A month ago we did not know if we had any SEC caliber Qb’s in the roster.

Let me know if any of this helps you understand why some Vol fans dont mind JG transferring. And remember it's not personal. JG is a good person and no one is attacking him in this post.

*In 2017 JG made his debut start against SC the JG lead Vols were 0-5 in SEC play with JG as the starter. The Vols averaged 14.8 points per game in JG's starts.
*In 2018 JG started in every SEC game. He left early in the game against Mizzou after being 0-2 passing. Not including the Mizzou game stats since JG didn't play much, the Vols were 2-5 in SEC play and averaged 22.28 points per game.
*In 2019 JG has started only 1 SEC game. The Vols are 0-1 with JG. JG failed to lead his team to any points while he was in the game. He threw for 0 TD and 2 INT in that lone SEC start in 2019.

Overall in SEC play JG as a starter is 2-10. (I removed the 2018 Mizzou game although he started and was 0-2 when he left very early in the game). The offense averaged 19.96 points per game during these 12 games. JG has 12 total TD in these 12 games averaging 1 TD per game. He has never had more than 2 TD"s in any SEC game. He failed to personally put up any TD's in 5 of the 12 games.

In many peoples opinions points and wins trump good td to int ratios and pass percentage stats. The failure to produce even a modest winning percentage over his career makes it easy for people to say thanks for your service and we wish you great success in your future endeavors.

Just trying to give you some insight as to why some Vol fans may be wanting JG to move on after this year. Hopefully I'm still your favorite couch potatoe and I sure hope I didn't incorrectly use the word your.

Go Vols

My bad JG is 2-11 as a starter in SEC games throughout his career. I forgot to add in the 2019 lone loss. His career winning percentage in SEC play is 18.18%.

All of those stats do not mean he isnt tough, a good leader, a fine young man, a VFL or anything of that nature. It simply means he is not a proven winner and since he earned his degree some people feel it may be best for him to move on in his career and hopefully find success , joy and happiness wherever life's journey takes him.

Again, I'm just trying to provide perspective since you said you didn't understand why some Vol fans may want JG to transfer.

If you know what’s going to happen, why do you get frustrated? We’re all looking at the same set of FACTS and coming up with different conclusions. Let it play out and some will end up less wrong than others.

JG, JT Shrout, Kasim Hill, Brian Maurer, and Harrison Bailey all battling for the spot next year? Boy, this is going to be fun!
Guarantano will transfer. Shrout and Maurer will battle it out with Kasim Hill for the top spot, while Bailey will redshirt (he's the future).

Maurer will win, barely, and we'll have a ten win season.

I said it earlier in this thread, but I doubt HB redshirts next year. You just don't see that happen very much anymore with highly touted guys. I'm sure they've told him hes going to have a legit shot to win the job and play a lot next year.

Given how common QB's hit the transfer portals these days, I would be surprised if we have 5 on the roster come next fall.

After Spring I would bet there will be 1 or 2 in portal over the summer and could be one of those after this season and before spring. According to how these last 4 games play out.
Do not believe JT will portal, I believe he will wait to be a Graduate transfer making him immediately eligible.
Since he's already RShirted
he's not in ideal spot for portal.

If Bailey does come, which I don't think he will unless he is guarnteed to start, which I don't see Pruitt doing that. I still look for Bailey to decomit, but hope he doesn't. If he does come I think he redshirts, jg transfers, if he doesn't then maurer or shout one transfers, I hope jg transfers. So I am hoping next year it will be maurer, shrout, and hill competing.

JMO here is top QB thinking since 4 game reprieve and portal came into play.
Enroll early compete for starting job,if you don't get stay and battle at least until you have exhausted the 4 games.
Don't let them play you in 5th game in mop up.
Leave team and announce transfer portal to let teams recruit you early enough to join Spring practice and do it again.
New world of college football for the elite players.

If we were to win out impressively with JG at QB do you think he would really transfer? I just can't see a 3 year SEC starter on an up and coming team leave out. That doesn't mean he's the best QB on the roster either, I just think it would be hard to give all of that up for Rutgers. If another SEC school or big time Power5 wanted him then maybe but I don't see that happening either. Those saying we can't win out with him at the position are wrong I believe but that's all just opinion on both sides.

Maurer will start when he is healthy.

JG is 100% transferring, We go into next year with a 3 QB battle (Bailey, Shrout, Mauer) I'm guessing that Mauer wins the job to start the season with Bailey backing him up and Shrout entering the portal at some point. ( I do think the best case scenario would be for Bailey to redshirt and for TN to go with Maurer and Shrout next year.)
