Well drr. Sorry you jumped in the middle of this, but we were talking if TN should exempt their sales tax, as it was just as burdensome as many states' income tax (original question).
It’s not as burdensome for the parties in question. Especially not compared to CALIFORNIA.

The working poor? Jesus man are you trying to be dense.

We’re talking about College athletes receiving $1000’s of dollars in endorsement for their NIL
You made Point A and I said why it wasn't completely accurate. You said income tax is on all earned income and I mentioned why it was not. Many working people don't even have to file taxes...because it is not on all earned income.

Meanwhile they will spend all that money and pay sales tax on most or all of it. Get why these SA, probably making, as you said, "$1000s", maybe 1k or 10k a year for 99%, to be better off with a sales tax exemption.

Income tax exemption unlikely to do them any good unless it is 1 in a million Zion.

I think yours is a better example, TN/GA is slitting hairs on sales tax with Georgia losing on the income tax. California is high on all their taxes so that might play more into if it would equate to a recruiting disadvantage and universities lobbying for "exemptions". TN/GA is 200k/195k but CA/everyone might be 200k/150k. You even have to figure in $2.50 gal vs $5 gal gas

Income Tax considerations for the working poor have no bearing on THIS discussion.

Don't get why concerned with California. How often do we fight for kids VS a cali school? Once every 3 or 5 years? And you KNOW they aren't repealing shiz over there. So we are good either way. Strange concern to have o_O

Btw even their rates don't go over 7% till over 40k lol. Not many kids makin that...

It’s literally where ALL of this started. It’s the State most talked about with regard to this topic. Pretty relevant 🙄

lol uhh tn sales tax was 7% last I remember. How many states have income tax above 7% for the average person?? TN is very burdensome for the lower and middle classes and retirees.
TN has NO income tax and ~ 8 - 9 % sales tax depending on county.
Other states that have income tax average 6 - 7 % income tax + 6 - 7% sales tax.
TN is one of the most economic states for anyone to live in .. very low cost of living and low overall taxes (income tax + sales + property tax).

EDIT: Just Googled it, TN has 9th lowest tax burden in 2019
States With Lowest Taxes 2019

Sure it does...these kids will mostly be making minimal money. A few hundred or thousand (scholarship/EA Football) guys. Most of these guys won't even have to file taxes.

Read the guidelines and see if you think anyone will be making huge amounts. Even if they do, it will be .01% of guys.

And again, they won’t pay a dime in Sales Tax unless they CHOOSE to.

Anyway, all the tax talk is ticking me off because it reminds me of what I pay. Off to bed, hope everyone has a good night.

I know I was off to bed but... it occurred to me, in true California fashion, California will not implement "exemptions" and instead will pass a law that will require the person/corp paying the college student to pay the income tax on the student's income and call it an "exemption".

Now I am really off to bed.

No doubt TN is tops for taxes. I believe only less burdensome states have offsetting mechanisms - AK has oil and Delaware has incorporation advantages. Was only saying if other states consider exempting income tax we should consider exempting sales tax as it is similar or more burdensome itself.
