Never thought I'd see the day, until the Tua-era got rolling, when a Bama team would be 56% pass, 44% run. Even crazier, they are nearly breakeven on runs at .03 EPA per run, compared to a whoppping .60 EPA per pass.

Ain't your daddy's Alabama anymore.
That kid is so good though, and they have an insane group of WRs. They would be stupid not to. Nobody thought Tua would be this good.

Those helmets were the best thing about the smoky greys imo. That was cool and not gaudy in any way. I liked the SGs, and that is saying something because I am a die hard traditionalist. I liked the contrast.
I thought they were absolutely awesome.

Idk if we had the smokey greys yet in 2014, but I still remember AJ making machine gun motions at the opposing team before kickoffs, "3rd down for what?" sending the team over the edge for one of the best 3rd down defenses in the nation for 2 years, and the smokey greys beating Florida.

Then we caved to all the BS, scrapped the song, and had that absolutely abysmal 3rd down song in 2017. Then we slowly killed off all the hype for the kids. Hopefully we are bringing some of that back now. Traditionalists or not, gotta do what gets the kids hyped up and playing with any extra juice available. It won't make us unbeatable, but if things like that add even 5 or 10% extra juice, do it. Every little bit helps.

As the great American orator Lyle Jones once said, "You're either a fountain or a drain. What are ya?".

Good thread on VQ about the 89 team. Got me thinking back to the old goal line plays we would run with Webb, Garner, and others from under center and all the RB had to do was dive over and break the plane.

Why is that not a thing like it used to be? Was the blocking required too dangerous (I imagine some type of cut blocking would be best here)? Or was it just not as effective as I remember it being as a child?
Just a guess, but maybe the probability of fumbling is high on that play because RB are not used to taking a snap from center.

Alabama has been all out spread since Kiffin got there. They also use their screen and short passing now as an extension of their run game. Their Offensive line hasn’t been overly impressive the last couple years but Man their skill group is so talented.

Not the worst loss in program history. Know your history, kid.
The 96 loss to Tiger High will always take that dishonor. That Vol team was absolutely loaded. It is the equivalent of this years UGA or Ohio State team losing to Western Kentucky or Jacksonville State.

This team losing to Georgia State is not in the same area code as that one in comparison when you take that into account.

Losing to GS is tied for second worst with the North Texas loss in the 70s.

I agree they were cool, but I think it is completely pathetic to need a uniform or stupid song to get hyped. Beating the isht out of the guy in the other uniform should be all the motivation you need. On that ideal I am a traditionalist.

Yeah I'm still curious on Tua though (NFL wise). He's a good one to be sure, but teams are tanking for him? He has the lowest percentage of passing yards though the air of anyone in this league. It was around 30% last I checked. Meaning if he has a "300 yard" game, he's really only throwing through the air for 90 yards. WRs are gaining the other 210 on their own. That has to be a historic ratio.

It's fascinating and a lot of credit to the scheme and WRs and Tua for placing the ball where it needs to be. Just not sure if that translates to the NFL with their LBs much better in coverage and there's no way he has those WRs when he lands in Miami...he will be at the anti-Alabama. See how he does with less talent than the teams he faces and maybe a whole different scheme.

While I get that, you're talking kids. Not professionals that are 100% business every game.

I really don't care what motivates them. I only care how much they are motivated. And if playing a rival gets them to 100%, but a uniform change or song gets them to 101%...give me the extra 1%. Every little bit helps!

He does get it to those guys perfectly in stride with perfect timing though. Venables took that away perfectly, and the Bubba gumps were doomed...because they had abandoned their tough physical run game.

Might be one of the best WR corps in history
It could also be revolutionary in a sense. They've shown a path where instead of focusing on having the next Megatron, or Julio Jones, you get fast AF guys and throw slants off RPOs. It could also be an equalizer. Small schools probably can't land the next monster wideout, but they can cherry pick a track star, put him on a slant and develop that part.

They really haven’t had a tough physical run game tho lately tho. It’s been decent but not lineup and run over you. They do a lot of read option, Sweeps, and counters.

I think teaching them to play hard just for the sake of competing is the most important and hardest aspect if Pruitts rebuilding job. I don't care how old you are, it is pathetic to not wanna play at your best because a song isn't playing or your uni bores you...pathetic.

Nfl offenses are becoming more and more linear tho. Brady can barely throw it 55 yards now. So being able to help your WRs yac is a really good way to build a simple and efficient offense. Rams do a fantastic job of this.
