OK, I've been a JG fan since his arrival. I've hated the thrashing fans on VN have given him. Always kept hope he'd suddenly show out and still do. All the same, when a freshman QB comes in and however briefly, ignites the team one cannot argue effectively against him. Doubly so when teammates vouch for that QB. I'm going to like JG because he dons the orange and white and unlike too many here, will not badmouth him. Just the same, the team has spoken. Some of them anyway.

Teammates hail Maurer's impact, ready to see more from freshman

I don't think many wanted him to fail. Every Vol fan wanted him to be as great as his physical talent said he could be. We spent a lot of time debating what issues were at play but there's no doubt that something in his mental or emotional make up prevents him from confidently processing information and making good decisions on time.

Maurer's TD to Jennings is the type of throw that should have defined JG as a great UT QB. He has more than enough arm strength and accuracy to place balls in that kind of tight window. Doing that puts a D on its heels. But somehow between pre-snap reads, post snap reads, decisiveness, and the confidence to make the throw... JG couldn't make those throws.

I argued much of the summer that JG was a half count late almost all the time. Looking at the "time to throw" stats from UGA... Maurer was literally a half second faster delivering the ball than JG has been this year.

He tried. Pruitt committed to him early to build his confidence. UT gave him an OC, Passing Game Coordinator, and QB Coach among the best available to try to work through his issues. I don't think it is possible to be a UT fan and be happy that all that effort went to waste. When it comes to making those snap decisions to throw... he appears not to have "it".

A lot of us saw it. I have never had a problem with JG himself. Some of his cult following though... yeah. The ring leader has predictably disappeared rather than have the courage to simply say he was wrong and those he attacked and accused falsely were right.

I would think the team has known for a long time that JG was holding them back. What they may not have known is that BM could come in and play like he did. Now that he has started a game and produced they are behind him, as they should be. JG has had his moments but they have been few and far between. To me, he has never looked like a SEC quarterback. I've never thought he had the ability to extend plays or was very aware of what was going on around him. Many blamed the OL last year, and while some of the blame could be attributed to OL play, there were plenty of times that it was all on him and the OL had nothing to do with it. This is what those of us that wanted him gone last year saw. Other's blamed everyone but him. I think we all hoped he would breakout this year under JC's system but it's been more of the same.
As these players have basically said, the team feeds off the quarterback. JG has been starving them to death.

Georgia State made a lot of peoples choices on several subjects.
I just hope we didn’t totally screw recruiting with that enormous turd.
If UT can manage to get 4 or 5 wins out of the last 7 games... they're going to sell it as a team transitioning from old to new then getting better over the season. You'd rather be selling 8 wins... but it isn't an impossible sell and especially when every quality player you talk to knows they have an opportunity to play or start early. On D especially, there's nothing but opportunity. A LOT of Fr next fall could end up starting in front of Sr's.

I was a fan of our QB JG, but he has shown this year that he is not our QB of the future. He has made the same mistakes all year and has not learned to correct them. First, JG locks his eyes on his intended receiver and stays there through the throw. He has constantly thrown into triple receiver coverage and failed to see open receivers downfield constantly. He has on many occasions held the ball too long resulting in a sack whereas he should have thrown the ball away. The offensive line is certainly not what we would desire, but part of the sacks are entirely due to JG. There is not doubt that he has a strong arm to get the ball downfield, but his other mistakes ruin all of this. Coach Pruitt and Offensive Coordinator has given him the opportunity, but now it is time to focus on our freshman QB.

Some have said the fans were booing a penalty and not JG. I personally can't remember. Fans should have been paying attention and known BM had to leave the game.

Not sure how much it matters but I'm not sure that it all doesn't just come back to being too indecisive. He lingers in looking at a target because he doesn't just read and react- indecisive. He holds the ball too long- indecisive. Doesn't manage the pocket or time to throw well- indecisive. He's constantly late- indecisive. He's afraid to make certain throws because he's already late- indecisive.

Confidence was brought up a while back. A lack of confidence makes sense but ultimately I think he just doesn't process information quickly enough.

I can't be there... but if it happens again please punch anyone who does that for me.

JG has given blood, sweat, and tears to the program. He simply doesn't deserve that even if he isn't the QB UT needs.

Very well stated

I think JG is holding on to a possible career completion % record from his time with CBJ. He'd take sacks rather than throw the ball away to keep the record, or run out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage. Unfortunately he looks like he can't get the voices of his first three coaches out of his head.
With some of the shots that Maurer will take JG will probably be back behind center this season and hopefully he'll take that opportunity to make all his doubters look like idiots.
At this point I'd like nothing better than to look like an idiot

JG's problem isn't CBJ or any of those coaches. It isn't his current coaches. It isn't the hits he's taken except for many being self-inflicted.

If he gets back in the starting line up do you really think he's going to suddenly process information fast and make throws like the one Maurer threw to Jennings for the TD? In fact, Maurer threw several into tight windows with confidence like a successful SEC QB MUST DO. JG is slow in his decision making and appears hyper-cautious on top of that. The chances of that changing are very, very slim.

Maurer will face one more D this year comparable to UGA in talent, depth, experience, and quality. He is mobile and has good instincts. He noticeably manages the pocket better than JG ever has. Maybe most importantly, his average time to throw for the season is 2.17 seconds. JG's is a full half second slower. That is a HUGE difference. It is the difference between a hit and no hit... a sack or a play downfield. Simply put, if he keeps it up he's not going to take the self-inflicted abuse that JG did.
