I don’t think JG was going to be here next year. Either he would be improved enough to test the draft, or be bad enough to warrant a transfer. Looks like the latter now.

Rumor was that Pruitt wasn’t high on Shrout anyway and that appears to have some credibility now.

That really just leaves Maurer. Maurer doesn’t have to play like a Heisman candidate. If he just plays decent showing his potential it’s enough to plant a seed of doubt in Bailey. I hope Bailey sticks but it could be harder to hold on to him now.
all we've ever heard from Pruitt is that they like Shrout, love his arm, but he's just not there from a decision making standpoint. and that's what's kept him from getting more reps.

i htink it is a foregone conclusion that JG will likely transfer.

so next year you'll have shrout, maurer, hill and bailey, and i'm now under the impression they'll still try do something else at QB from a transfer standpoint.

the only thing they've wanted is real competition at the QB spot and this year was as close as they've gotten to it....and that was just at the #2 spot.

next year will be the first year they'll have a real competition for the starting job....Maurer's experience that he's getting will be invaluable, Hill comes in with experience, but Bailey is still going to be the most talented one in the room. should be interesting. Shrout...well, i think it's next year or never for him to move up the depth chart....he's already used his RS, so he might have some decisions to make if things stay the same with him.

I don’t see any way Shrout sticks around if he doesn’t start to play more down the stretch.

still no baby!

Funny the difference a week makes.

This place went from “need Bailey ASAP” to “I wonder if Maurer is so good Bailey will go elsewhere.”

Jalen Hurts, Tate Marshall, Jacob Eason, Justin Fields, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Shea Patterson, Kelly Bryant, Hunter Johnson, Austin Kendall, Tommy Stevens, Ryan Willis

It's kind of becoming a bigger deal...not saying Bailey doesn't arrive on campus, but if he loses the starting job after a year here what's to stop him leaving?

depends on what he really thinks of his own abilities to be a starter, and what he really wants out of this. i think the staff has probably been honest with him, and he likely knows the deal up to this point.

what kind of options does a kid that's not close to starting and lost the #2 job to a true freshman really have in the portal? what are the goals? if he really just wants to play, then he's probably transfering to an FCS school.....and that's fine....he's already used the RS so i don't see him transferring to another P5 or FBS program and getting a waiver. maybe he's on pace to graduate over the summer and can be a GT? dunno.

i won't be surprised either way though. but it's not like a justin fields or kelly bryant situation.....at best it's a keller chryst situation and even that's being generous...at least chryst started some at Stanford....

How many of those left after their freshman year? How many of those left because they lost the starting job?

I don’t think your assumption that a good QB would make Bailey have second thoughts is wrong. I’m just not sure Maurer is that QB. He’s had one good quarter. Let’s see where he goes from here.

A few are grad transfers too, point remains the same. It's more common now than it was even 5 years ago for players (especially QBs) to transfer for playing time.

Again though I hope Bailey is the type of guy that wants to be at UT and wants to win the job. I just think he might be using his RS in year one, not a bad thing at all. I'd love for it to be the case too.

Since Shrout has already used his RS, The smart thing for him to do would be to go to work academically where he graduates by the end of next year. Then he could spend next year trying to move up the QB ladder at UT. If he can't, then be a graduate transfer with immediate eligibility. He would be a RS junior after he transfers.

If he left UT after this year (unless he transfers down to FCS level) he would have to sit out a year and would still be a RS junior once he is eligible to play.

i think 6-7 left after their freshmen season..martell, eason, fields, murray, johnson, stevens, mayfield..? 3 lost the starting job i believe.....Hurts, Eason, Bryant....Baker transferrred twice, so i'm a little fuzzy there.

Yeah totally true. I just know Bailey recently opened it up and started taking visits again.

yeah, i kinda said the same thing in another response to another post. but yeah, agreed on all accounts.

My gut tells me if he’s going to go into a QB competition somewhere it makes more sense to go somewhere you’ll win in the meantime.

Maybe we’ll win enough down the stretch to hold on to him.

I hope JT sticks around, he has enough arm talent to give himself a real shot to earn PT if he gets the rest of things in order. Plus 3 years and graduating at UT will make him a very coveted transfer prospect as a grad transfer.

I also hope JG transfers to a school and balls out next year in his final season, gets drafted too. He's a great person and deserves it, has been a true VFL and stuck with this team/program through a ton of turmoil.

Was a VQ comment on 99.1...not sure if he's taken one or is planning 'em.

And the article I found wants money to find out...

QB commit Bailey discusses Vols' struggles, visit plans
This is the article where Bailey said he may take a couple of quiet visits and not let anyone know publicly if he does take visit(s). Most people have thought this is his insurance policy in case Pruitt is fired this year. He needs to have a backup plan just in case. As long as Pruitt stays, Bailey will be a VOL.
