Jeremy Banks needs to be dismissed

There’s discretion on almost any charge. Like the discretion not to test him to begin with.

There’s no discretion on the warrant. They ran his name and it said to take him in.
They could have made him run field sobriety tests, and some of the eye tests in particular are loaded - MANY stone cold sober people would fail the eye tests.

Know someone who was charged with a DUI for falling asleep in her car - totally sober, yet now charged with a DUI that's going to cost her $1,000 to set straight.

Those cops absolutely could have screwed Banks over HARD. The fact they didn't says a lot about their character.

He's lucky his mouth didn't put him in a lot worse trouble.

I hope he learns from it and there is no second time.

I can see why you would think he is drunk, but I don’t think you guys realize how dumb the average SEC football player is. These guys for the most part are not role models. They’re just extremely athletic and genetically gifted.

I don't like Popeye's. Closest one to me is in a truck-stop anyway. I once worked in trucking, and do my best to never eat in truck-stops now.

I just eat something else on Sundays.

In Murfreesboro, slick pig smoked wings or zaxbys is the move.

If that merits a dismissal, we might as well close down our sports programs.
He was angry and said something very wrong. But, dismissal? Would our rivals?
I agree , but it is sad that our society puts up with this total lack of respect. Mr. Banks showed very well that he is selfish and didn't seem to think at all about the program , his fellow team mates or staff. The officers on the other hand , they we're too kind!

I disagree with most of what you are saying on this issue....but the assertion that he was drunk or high is patently false, and I don't know where people are coming up with that. The incident was bad enough on it's face...it does not need incorrect information injected into the discussion.
At first I thought his behavior was that of someone on a substance but when you watch the entire video and how bizarre he acts toward the end I think the kid has some mental issues. He definitely needs some help

"They" meaning officers "certainly have a choice" in if they let a non-arrested person in their patrol car on duty. Much of a police officers job is access to the public and yes, most officers welcome it but not required. If anything the departments themselves may be required to allow certain access to their procedures but not a blanket statement. I could decide to just show up and request a ride along but I do not have any guarantee or right to the ride along.

Most departments have some sort of program, weather it be a citizens police academy or generally allow people to ride along. However a specific officers may refuse riders. Much of this is department dependant and state dependant.

To make a blanket statement and infer specific officers don't have a choice is making too much of an assumption.
Uhm...no. A supervisor can assign a citizen to ride with anyone they want. Officer doesnt have a choice.

Quote from article about Pruitt:

“This is the silliest s--- I’ve ever seen in my life,” Pruitt told the officer. “I got it. I understand. I worked at four places and they never had no crap like this except for here. Because the people usually say, ‘Hey, something’s not right here.’”
Pruitt then ended the call by saying, “Go ahead. Do your civic duty, man.”

Yeah, the only thing NOT RIGHT is Pruitt. He's not right for this program.

To answer your question, it's not okay for him to speak to police that way and it's my belief that he does deserve some time of punishment. IMO, this does not merit dismissal (which is the point of the thread)

I also respectfully disagree with your assumption about coddling. People in general, and especially kids, are shaped by their own personal experiences and upbringing........

For example, sometimes kids have good parents, sometimes kids are born without good parents, sometimes kids attend good schools with good teachers, sometimes kids aren't fortunate enough to attend good schools with good teachers....Sometimes kids are raised up in church or have access to people/places in their community that has the to help them in the case they don't have the aforementioned things....It's ironic that many kids that didn't have these things growing up, refer that it as being "coddled".....

I believe, as much as we want to believe that someone like JB is a grown man, I'm of the mindset that he isn't and he, along with most everyone else his age, is learning how to be a man presently. I know this because I there are people, including myself, that made really dumb comments at 19.......(Remember, JB's comments are really what people are upset about....and rightfully so)...

I don't know JB's story and I've already said his statements and attitude was out of line.... The point is that I don't think we can assume all 19 year olds are the same. Many still, unfortunately, haven't learned some of the life lessons you or I might have learned at 19....What I am hoping for is that this WAS a lesson and it has changed him in a productive way. Because lets keep this in perspective: no dope, no alcohol, no sexual assault, no stealing, no fighting, etc, etc......I don't know that kicking the kid out of school for his comments is the most effective way to teach he and his teammates the right lesson about "personal accountability".........

If I was the judge and jury in a fantasy world, I'd suspend him 1 game and have him meet once a week with someone like Al Wilson for mentoring. Hopefully, there would be a little talk about LB play sprinkled in....

I totally agree with you about no dismissal. He needs UT football more than it needs him. A mentor would be great.

I fully understand the background issue, believe me. 33 years teaching in Title 1 schools, going to bat in court for kids who no one else believed in, going to visit in prison when their own mother would not, finally convincing the momma to go but having to take her because she had no one else who would. Endless collect calls...the works.
I was pissed at Banks when I listened to the hour long video, but at the same time it tugged at my heartstrings that he obviously needs direction and lots of love. Someone to care. And he feels Pruitt does.

I’ve had that call like Pruitt had, because I was the only one the kid thought would care. “He says you are the only person that would say something good about him” says the attorney when he asks if I will go to court. How can I refuse him? I’m that loving, nurturing Momma type personality. Oh no, what message does it send if I turn my back on you? I can’t not get involved. After several rounds with the same kid, my heart was just broken—I can’t want it more than you—you have to want it for yourself. And I had to distance myself—it took a few more screw-ups but they are finally on the right path.

My coddle remark is more about how they are dealt with in school nowadays. Instead of starting at a young age and continuing through high school with strict but loving consequences, what I have seen in the last 10 years is a lot of excuses and escalating behavior issues. “You provoked them, it’s home, it’s their culture...” I never had a kid say FU until my last few years. They wouldn’t have dreamed of it. Now it’s okay—its their culture. Well my job is to teach them that it is not our culture as a society! If they aren’t learning at home we have to try to fill the void and not reinforce the inappropriate behavior. That is where society is losing the battle. No it isn’t okay to talk that way to your boss, the police, your teachers, your elders. If that’s the way you want to communicate with your peers, fine. They think they will just go get another job after they curse out the boss. Honestly!

But the line is now crossed all the time and they have no idea where the line is anymore. Anything goes!! Believe me, I wish him nothing but success!

Given his age, I can accept not dismissing him. I can’t agree that it doesn’t come close. If he would have made a more blatant threat especially to the female officer, he should have been dismissed immediately.

Worse things happen in Bama all the time. Let's review the tape...

I hope Jeremy's enlightenment process, so to speak, involves a mandatory 6pm to 6am Saturday night ride along with the Police.

Banks was a jerk, rude, said very inappropriate things.
But, those aren’t criminal.
If we lower our bar for suspension or dismissal there, we won’t have very many SEC caliber players. It is what it is.
This is a peek behind the seedy side of intercollegiate sports.
For some, it negates the thrills of college Saturday’s. Others don’t care and just want to see a fun winning product.

Im willing to go out on a limb and say there are lots of SEC caliber players that dont take pride in shooting at cops and threatening women, just a hunch.

I disagree with the wasn’t criminal aspect. His intent was clearly to harass and cause fear, which is criminal

Lol @ this thread. OP has only commented in it 2 times since he started it.

Suckers.
Just another example of how delusional UT fans are. Most people on this board have no idea what college football players that they idolize are actually like in real life. It’s unfortunate that kids think the way they do, but people need to see reality. People wouldn’t think the way they do about almost all players on the team if they knew them in real life.

But, we do hold our Chess Team to higher standards.

Nonsense like this and worse has gone on at UT for decades.
The nonsense I was talking about isn't Banks' actions (nonsensical though that is), but the defense of Banks' actions. During Fulmer's time, the odds of this guy seeing the field again would have been very slim; the odds of him seeing the field again for many of our rivals would have been (and still would be) very high.

Kids that are 18-20 years old and in college towns do not see the cops as being on their side. Police departments all over in the country prey on kids this age in order to make money off of misdemeanors. A lot of it stems from underage drinking and how much money cops make off of minor in possession tickets, fake ids, etc.

Why? Threatening a police officer is threatening a police officer. Its not 1955. If she is woman enough to take the job then she get all that goes with it. Her gender has absolutely nothing to do with anything.
