CBJ had some bad breaks, especially with injuries but he also lucked out in having Dobbs, Hurd and Kamara. Reality is that his scheme worked in :small ball: areas like Cincy. The schemes he had as well as the type he recruited for dont work as well in SEC play. Now we are left with the aftermath.

Losing the way he did to both Florida and Oklahoma that year was bad luck. Had he won those two I think he would still be our head coach - for better or worse

Also, I was wondering exactly what bad things his son was telling Cade Mays and others about UT?

Any insiders or folks who knows any of this stuff would be great insight as to how we got this bad lol....

Butch was on a decent trajectory through Year 3. Year 4 was decent but he underachieved with the talent on that team.

I think the AJJ incident and Title IX lawsuit took a lot out of him. He just never had the same fire after that.

I can think of several MILLION $$$$ reasons off the top of my head. Botch is a POS and I wish him the worst life has to offer. Smoking a freakin cigar in Neyland after the Bama loss last year tells you what a lying chump he is.

The shocking/unbelievable decision to not have a s&c program for a couple of years was his biggest mistake. It’s hard to fathom how many injuries might’ve been avoided and how many players might’ve developed more with a great program. He also was a very bad game manager in that he’d almost always want to go ultra conservative once we got a lead.

Jones now appear to have been somewhat of a phony but we ignored the warning signs. The guy admitted to thinking "man, I would love to coach here" as Derek Dooley was thrashing his Cincinnati team. He was looking for the next job as he only stayed places 3 or 4 years staying in line with the hydroplane behind Brian Kelly.

I don’t know anymore about Jones than I know about Pruitt, but I know he won 9 games twice and was 3-0 in bowl games. May be the worst person ever, but I think he loved Tenn when he was hired.
In hindsight, he started going down hill when he changed from Dormady to JG. Don’t know if there is a connection or not. My problem is I liked Jones and I like Dormady. Maybe the locker room did too.

I don't understand it either, even winning the opener in 2017 against Georgia Tech was fun and had me thinking we were going to have another decent year.

It was the Florida loss IMO that sealed Jones' fate. Florida had not practiced for two weeks and had several players suspended. Tennessee should have massacred Florida that afternoon instead they played as sloppy as Florida and it resulted in Florida being able to win the game. After that loss Jones lost the team and never regained it. You could see it the next week against UMass and for the rest of Jones' tenure. After the Florida he knew that he was toast.

Had Tennessee beaten Florida I think 2017 turns out a little different for the Vols. First he still has the team. Second, we don't have the worst season in UT football. Third I doubt Georgia shuts out Tennessee (not saying Tennessee wins). Finally I think Tennessee gets a win over either South Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri, or Vanderbilt and gets to a bowl game. Would it be a big one? No I think it would either be Birmingham, Shreveport, or Memphis. Most importantly though I think Jones gets another year. With that being said though I think eventually Jones was going to be fired. In 2016 he did not win enough games to keep his job, but yet did not lose enough games to get fired.

I remember the extraordinary injuries and now we don’t have very many. So it was either the s&c or practice contact (circle of life type drills) is different from Pruitt’s. Whatever it was it is definitely noticeably. Of course we did actually win some games.

Financially, a fired SEC coach is like winning the lottery. He definitely gave up because he alienated himself within his own program.

I think he was great at winning the press conference and putting on a show at a small school. The problem was that bj needed to be a football coach and he knows very little about being a football coach. He could get recruits but he couldn't coach them or keep them happy.

In short he is a snake oil salesman that Tennessee didn't just buy one jar. They invested in the whole business. Once that happened, bj laughed all the way to the bank.

I get it now... I vote that the CDC needs to ban vaping and smoking cigars on the 3rd Saturday in October.

Keeping Butch wouldn’t have done the same for Martinez. Frost had a stronger relationship with him. Tidbit as a recruiting regular on here: lot of doubt on the board about Martinez’s arm strength and long term prognosis after the shoulder injury that ended his senior season almost before it began.

Good times.

Still cant believe we had Kamara on our team....for 2 years..
