Why was Maurer pulled?

I was listening to a Vols podcast and the host rightly pointed out that none of the UT QBs were high quality recruits and that people are putting way too much faith in them. This team doesn't have a real starting QB on the roster.
I know. That’s the problem with the fact that he signed early. Had he not he would’ve been a 4* after his senior season and the narrative of him being just an average D1 QB out of HS would have been put to rest and replaced with him being considered above average(He signed in Jan and new updates came out in Feb). Which would have changed the way WE feel as a fan base as well. Truth is the kid hasn’t had much of an opportunity to prove otherwise and the limited opportunities he’s had were brief. Give the kid some patience and I’m telling you you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Good quarterbacks don't need people making excuses for them. They just go out there and get the job done. Plenty of SEC teams have had huge success with true freshman QBs. Tennessee isn't one of those teams because we make bad recruiting decisions. Or more likely we are forced to settle for table scraps.

I understand that point of view but I’m telling you this kid is no “table scrap”. The difference in those freshman qbs around the league that are starting is they were given the keys and the confidence vs Maurer being criticized by the ones he trusted enough to sign here. He’s not practiced with the 1s. He’s not had the coaching staff that’s tried to keep his confidence high. The fact that he still has that look in his eye should tell you all you need to know about his belief in himself after the beating he’s taken from Pruitt. He was out there today with essentially NO practice and running off of pure natural ability.

I'm just not buying the argument that he wasn't given a chance. I'm also not buying that he is of the same caliber as Fromm or Tua or any number of other great freshman QBs around college football.

Well let’s see.... against UTC he was given 3 series. A total of 3 pass plays were called. He’s a pocket passer that can run, not a duel threat that can’t pass. Then there was today...... he had 4 series in a game he wasn’t expected to appear in. Chaney was taken off guard as well as himself evidenced by the exact same play calling and He had no practice with the 1s going in. What I’m saying is each time he was put at a disadvantage. Even if he practices with the 1s until UGA it would still be unfair to assume he’s no good because we all know we don’t match up with UGA in any phase of the game. So he’ll still be at a disadvantage. Now had Pruitt went with him from the start he may be showing the improvements by now but now that we’re in the SEC gauntlet it’s unfair to judge his talent level with this being his first real action.

Fyi: Maurer has now led the team to the last 10 points.

JG has gone over 6 quarters without a TD pass (or run, but that's actually been two years).

JG finished the FLA game with a QBR of 9.

If the argument is to put BM in the game because JG will never be any better and it can't get any worse and what do we have to lose then I agree. But if the argument is that BM is this savant QB in hiding and the coaches are purposefully holding him back and not giving him a chance, that's where I call BS on BM.

By your logic practice means nothing? Everyone should just know how to go win on their own natural abilities?
and by your logi maurer has skipped practice or practiced with another team

"he hasnt practiced with the ones"

as an excuse. right. neither did trask, but look what he's done 2 games straight.

gtfoh....he's been here since january, which means he's had a very long time to know everything about the offense or as much as JG and Shrout. stop making up excuses. and he's a 3 star. he's shown us he's a 3 star. he wasnt gonna be a 4 star.....period

Dude... you’re comparing apples to oranges. Trask DID practice with his starters all week! And also Trask is a 3rd year collegiate QB and you’re comparing his performance against a first year freshman with as many series of experience? Are you serious? You can’t be serious.....

Compared to the best in the nation in his class, his stats disagree.

I believe ESPN had him as a 4*… but screw stars. That's not the be all end all. Those same recruiting services told us that JG was a top dual-threat quarterback.

Maurer had an offer from UT and Ohio State. Anyone making the point that he was not a good recruit doesn't know what they're talking about.

Thank you. And had he posted his later offers after committing to UT he’d probably be looked at differently as well.

We've been on JG but I'm starting to wonder if db's don't respect our WR talent. They seem to press them. Our speed doesn't scare anyone.

yeah, and what happened? 4/11. stop it

That 4/11 for 44 yards was HALF of our total first half offense. In one series the kid put up half of what a JG lead offense put up for a whole half.

First half, 88 total yards with JG in there

One series, BM puts up 44 yards, no matter how ya slice it, that’s better productivity my guy

Well I’ve been saying that since last year when everyone was blaming the o line for global warming. If we had more speed on the outside and JG proved to be willing to take shots downfield then d coordinators couldn’t afford to stack the box against the run and short passing game. Yet another reason to go with the gunslinger. He’s not afraid to take chances downfield. Therefore LBs will back up, corners can’t afford to “peek” in the backfield, safeties don’t drop in the box and the run game opens up making play action passes much more effective. Adding some real speed on the outside would help in all these areas imo.

You can’t say that! It’s severely damaging to his case against me!
