Strong Source: Fulmer is Gone

Maybe his source just doesn't want UTK fans to expect someone like Gruden? Most of us who spend significant time on these boards know who the up and comers are but the average joe on the street probably thinks Bronco Mendenhal is a rodeo star and Will Muschamp is some kid who works at the Walgreens down the road.

Just a guess, but since Hamilton went after what everyone said was an up and comer coach in Bruce Pearl and succeeded. I think he goes after Muschamp.

So somebody thinks there aren't many top coaches available? I call BS not only because of this line but because it just sounds fishy. There are plenty of young, hungry guys out there that would love a job as HFC at Tennessee.

Misread. A young, hungry coach is not a "top notch" in the way I meant it. I was referring to the desire of Vol fans to pull some amazing coup and get Pete Carroll or others. I'm not saying it can't happen -- I'm just saying concern about pulling a huge "name" has been voiced within the UT community.

For the record: I've posted here a while and never posted much on speculation. I don't speculate unless I feel it's worthy. However, this is obviously SPECULATION in that it is not official, nothing has been signed, etc.

Don't be insulted if I take this inside source with a grain of salt but hope there is truth in the rumor.

That makes sense.

I think everyone can agree CPF is a Vol and appreciated for the NC.

I just wish after the Bama game he would bow out with grace and dignity instead of fighting like I'm afraid he'll do.

You don't get to where he is without being a fighter and from every credible source it seems like CPF is one hell of fighter.

I wish he would announce his retirement prior to the Alabama game. Maybe the players would get inspired and win it for him like Michigan did for their dearly departed.

Yep. There are good coaches available. All they have to do is ask.

another thing to consider, and i obviously dont' have any idea whether or not any of the rumor in this thread is true or not, but the fact Clemson is on the market, if UTK is going to be in the market for a coach, then that may be forcing UT's hand a bit.

it's all being well chronicled what FLorida and UNC were able to do by getting in the market early to go after Meyer and Davis. the last thing Hamilton needs right now is to be sitting there in December knowing that this decision was coming but having sat on his hands while Clemson got the guy we might have an eye on, because he wanted to see how we fared in the Bama game.....or any other game for that matter.

Lex, that silence you speak of by Hamilton is only broken by the wringing of hands i'm sure he's doing when thinking about all of this and what he might have to do......shortly. especially if something like this were true.......then you really can't wait, can you?

My best guess...purely speculation...performance expectations were given prior to the season that have already gone unrealized.....I think the wheels have already started turning.

Could be wrong...purely speculation.

If that is the case, I hope to goodness the feelers are out.

On one hand you don't poke your nose into too many holes sniffing for a coach during the season. On the other hand, you don't want to be left in the cold.

I don't see how they can get too public about anything just yet. Keeping quiet for as long as possible reduces chances of an embarrassment factor.

imo, if Fulmer would go ahead and announce now that he is retiring at the end of the year, people would think a lot more of him and they would come out and support him the rest of the year regardless of what happens. At least we would know we are getting a new coach for next year. Not saying things will be any better, but we have no choice at this time.

I thought Lloyd Carr's bow out was about as classy as you could get in today's age. I agree that it would be the best case and give Hamilton the green light to search for the best possible and salvage some recruits.
That being said, if this is all just a tease, then you only think some of us fans and boosters are PO'ed now, wait till you take it back!!!!

probably. Technically speaking, it's not like anything can legitimately happen until the season is over, unless a guy currently not coaching is a realistic option, a la Kiffin. no need to rush on something if you don't have to, i can understand that. but....if the decision is already made or it's a foregone conclusion.....i also don't see the need to go thru the motions from this or that point forward, whatever point that may be (after MSU loss, Bama loss, etc...)....

If Phil is getting the boot soon....he will go kicking, as he has his eyes set on surpassing Neyland and attending the renaming ceremony from Neyland to Fulmer Stadium......oh he is soooo close.

I need to call my good friend Jimbo Sexton tonight....and sort through all this carp. I will let you all know the real deal.

Bowden leaving Clemson may give some motivation for UT Admin to push CPF on announcement...the operative word is "may."

I would like to see CPF make this statment the week of the bama game, Ithink fans would come out and it could be a huge plus.

I have nothing against CPF and I beleive he has given his all for Tennessee since his playing days...at this time however (and we all face this with age) his all is not enough.

I am the same age as CPF and it is difficult to know if it is time to go...who will or can replace you...have you done enough...are you bending to pressure (no one wants to think his critics forced him out)...can one more year relight the fire...etc.

Some of you younger fellas have not gone through this process, it seems so easy on the outside looking in, rather than on the inside looking out.

Regardless I hope CPF gives Tennessee his "all" one more time making the right decision to pass the reins on to a new man and regime. There is no shame, especially with his credentials at the school, to simply admit it is time to move on. A lot of great coaches have done so.

Finnebaum asked the question, is Muschamp = Saban or is Muschamp = Ed Orgeron.

Muschamp is not another Ed Orgeron. Ed Orgeron had never even been a defensive coordinator before he took the Ole Miss job. He had only been a position coach and recruiting coordinator. Muschamp is a proven DC and is seems to be very intelligent. He is a firey young guy and I think he is just what this program needs. Also if we hired Muschamp I would love it if he brought Major Applewhite with him as OC and associate head coach. I know Applewhite is a Texas alum but he is only making 250,000 in Austin coaching RB's. I think we could afford to pay this guy upwards of 500,000 because Muschamp would be a cheaper hire than say a Butch Davis, or another proven HC. I like the idea of taking a chance on some younger guys and seeing how it works out. I am sold on Muschamp and Applewhite both and I would do whatever it takes to get them to knoxville as soon as possible.

I hardly ever post on here. I certainly don't get on here and make wild speculations, and I've hated all these rumor threads too but I've heard the exact same thing, almost word for word...that its a done deal. the only question is how it will go down. My info is 3rd hand, the original source being a mid-level booster. Now certainly there is a chance that between the original source and myself, info got distorted. But I consider the source reliable enough to give me allot of confidence that it is true.
