Recruiting Forum Football Talk II

Good grief can we stop talking about other coaches. We have a coach. He isn't going anywhere, especially not this year. Kiffin is awful, he tanked this program. If he were so great he wouldn't be at FAU. Leach isn't coming here. And if he did, he wouldn't win here. This is Florida week. We are not having a coaching search. What the heck is wrong with you guys letting hank and Kingston take over this thread with this garbage talk?
Don’t listen to anyone. You’re right. Those two spew stupid s**t all the time.

What’s interesting is we all trust Fulmer and his decision making (that was a big selling point for Pruitt) and his first choice was Doeren after Cutcliffe pointed him in that direction.
well, that Doeren deal kinda went south right after the riot. and currie was in charge of that particular potential hire, with Fulmer brought in to "consult" or whatever.

i think had fulmer been at the helm from the jump, obviously things go a lot differently than they did.

as for the faith in fulmer, i think that really has more to do with him at the very least understanding what the priority is for the football program (stability and recruiting), and what priority the football program is/should be for the university (front porch)....and then having your decision making processes stem from THAT, and that alone. not all the namby pamby crap that drove decision making over the last 12 years or so.

and so far, so good on that front. the football program is getting what they want. and the rest of the sports at UT are all pretty much on the up swing.

Who is 68-39 at NC State with only one losing season in his tenure, all while navigating being in the same division as Clemson, FSU, Syracuse, & Louisville. Granted now that FSU & Louisville are rebuilding he should do a bit better. Still the ACC isn't far off being the 2nd best football conference, I think Big 10 has 'em cause of depth of team talent...but the gap has closed.

Agree with the lack of rushing plays. Disagree with your take on his defenses.

2019: 32nd allowing just 16 PPG
2018: 42nd allowing just 23.3 PPG
2017: 58th allowing just 25.8 PPG
2016: 50th allowing just 26.4 PPG

The first 4 seasons were a tad rougher since he was rebuilding from nothing at WSU, but once he got a bit better talent he's kept WSU in the top 60 defenses in the country. With next to no running game to shorten games, in a offensive happy PAC-12. I mean, I would have at least been willing to see what he could do. Just the natural talent boost of being UT & SEC, would have been interesting. He's never had the level of talent he could pull at UT in his career at TTU or WSU.
Those are decent numbers...…… For the PAC12...…...

Our offensive line is pretty good at run blocking. Don’t think they’re very good pass blocking although the sack numbers aren’t terrible.

My biggest concern is Grantham loves confusing the offensive line’s assignments and bringing heat from everywhere. Can JG correctly diagnose it pre snap and will the offensive line get it in time? That’ll make the difference.
i think it's the opposite. they've been pretty good in protections, better anyway.

we've had success running out side zone, not near as much between the tackles......we struggle in short yardage situations.

still a work in progress overall, but i've seen this O line take steps. they look better than they did thru three games last year, i feel pretty comformatble in saying that.

Pruitt most certainly is going somewhere, and hopefully this year. He's tanked the program even further, and we've forgotten that fact for a week because he beat a local Knox County HS squad. We're going to lose out except for UAB, maybe.

Yeah, maybe Doeren wasn’t as bad a hire as it seemed at the time. Fulmer wanted him and Currie wanted him too. The backlash from the fanbase made him turn it down.

Might as well start making a short list. Pruitt’s not going to work out here. Losing to Georgia State sealed that deal. We can let him stock the cupboard and hire a quality coach at the end of the 2022 season.
Leech was horrible his fist few years at Washington State including some 3-9 seasons and a loss to Portland state. So I guess he can’t be the answer either right.

It’s clear it’s just too early to make such declarations on whether Pruitt will work out. So please take the coaching search discussion elsewhere.

Lol leach wouldn’t win here but he’s won at places much harder to win at than here. Sorry he’s not a good ol’ boy bawl coach

Probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Same for the people who are "glad we didn't hire Gruden". We're not going to hire anyone better than those guys.

IDGAF what conference he's in....we just gave up 38 to Georgia freaking State with a stable full of defensive "geniuses" on staff.... (still a bit salty)

Leach is likely not going to land a SEC gig, if Arkansas, Ole Miss, & Miss State all passed on him his chances are pretty slim. But people didn't think Spurrier would work out with his "Run & Gun" offense either at Florida.

Not worth much more discussion though, he's not here and Fulmer will never hire anyone that isn't willing to pound the rock.

I don’t believe that. He wasn’t even making choices when Doeren was approached.

Doeren is an interesting coach...goes 3-9 then 8-5.

Pulls Jacoby Brissett there as a transfer from Florida, now he's a starting NFL QB for the Colts. Then lands Ryan Finley as a transfer from Boise State and turns him into a NFL QB who could end up starting this year if Dalton stumbles for the Bengals. Seems to have a top 50 defense yearly, runs a balanced offense that runs the ball (has had 1k rushers the last 3 seasons). I don't know, my hangup with him was I felt he was trying to use us to get his contract dispute with NC State settled and get a raise (which he did).

I think the VQ guys said it. Fulmer wasn’t at the helm at that point but was “consulting.” He talked to Cutcliffe about potential hires and Cut said Doeren was the best coach he faced at Duke. I think Doeren was on Currie’s list already - albeit down the line.

Are we giving credit to Will Friend, or no?

It matters which conference it is.

Sounds like they were near done on a Doeren deal after Gundy pulled out. Once the backlash started after the talks were leaked - Currie backtracked and prioritized Leach.

Dave Doeren was ‘fired up’ about Tennessee job ... then the Volunteers’ athletics director ghosted him

It isn’t in that article but if I remember correctly Fulmer then circled back to Doeren who turned down the job due to fan backlash and getting a new deal at NC state.

Doreen is one solid coach. Might end up being who we should have hired

If the VQ guys said it, they were reading tea leaves when we’re drinking coffee. Nowhere near a FACT, much less anything to be declared as such. Doeren was the last legit Currie attempt before the Gundy hail mary and the Leach rogue mission.

Then it should’ve been written somewhere. Link more recall less.

You're welcome to believe what ya want, but considering we hired an unproven coordinator I don't think anyone can say Pruitt was a better choice. He could still prove to be "the guy" though, which I hope he does.
