Maurer TD

Did anyone notice Pruitt and Weinke talking to Maurer after his touchdown? It looked like they were being a little harsh to him. Does anyone know what was going on?

It was probably a mistake he made or a read he didn't make on the series. Or he could have said don't get hurt.

Let me reword my statement. It looked to me like JT's plays were basically all design as passing with little thought on the run game. Brian's plays appeared to be designed as rpos with the emphasis on the run. Just an observation
Because one is a pocket passer and one is a dual threat. Real Albert Einstein, eh?!

I didn't see him "strut". He dove for the pylon. I can understand ball security, but let's be honest here. This OL has been a liability for years now. Odd are that we wouldn't have been able to push it in from the 1 or 2 yard line so I wouldn't be too harsh on Maurer. He made the play. We need more of that.

The kid shows he has juice...excitement....the want to...the push...the ability to take a team on his shoulders........but I don't think this squad of coaches know it when the see it....Tennessee has such poor QB coaching.....i see why now Tennessee came out so poorly in their first game.....

Scenario #1 is most likely. Even though he is a pro-type, he's good at the run. Can keep defenses on their heels.
I think he would've matched up better with the starters. Watch Keyton start catching passes when HB shows up lol 😂
Myself and littlevol already called him out on it. That’s twice now and I’ve always told my kids “once is an accident, twice is a habit”. I have no doubt when HB gets here he’ll learn to catch in traffic again.

Idk, it just seems that the backups are never ready at tn. Meanwhile, you have freshman lighting it up elsewhere. Why is that?
That's because of talent difference. The only reason anybody thought they were going to be ready was people in a panic over JG not playing well. They were both 3 star recruits and Shrout only started one year for his school I believe. Maurer might have been a 4 star. We haven't recruited ready now QBs very well until Bailey. I think he will be starting next year if we can hang on to him.

I’m happy you were able to evaluate him on such a short sample size of 3 pass plays and would suggest applying for UT as a qb evaluator. Bring them back to this post to prove you only needed 3 pass plays to determine what’s taken them months. It’s even more of a special talent to do so in a style of offense that a kid has NEVER ran. He’s a pocket passer with an ability to run. Not an option qb. But maybe I should’ve asked you before making such a assumption given that you already feel comfortable that HB is so much better.
Before you call him a pocket passer maybe you should talk to CJP as once again he stated that they had more run plays set for BM and more pass options for JT. Situation this week called for more run option is why BM got 1st call today, he said the situation determined who went in and they had more run plays designed for BM is why he went in 1st. Evidently some of the best offensive minds in the country think he's a runner and not a pocket guy. Coach has even stated so a couple of times. Your evaluation of this kid is the exact opposite of most I feel.

My evaluation of this kid comes from years of experience watching him play live. HE IS NOT AN OPTION QB! He’s a very accurate PASSER with an ability to run and possibly one of the fastest on the field at any given time. Truth is he neither a pocket passer nor a Duel threat. He’s a hybrid. Which means he’s equally as effective at both.

I didn't understand it either. The QB made a good play.

So what if he didn't dump it off to a receiver or RB. You've got to trust your quarterback. And in a live game under center everything happens so fast that he saw a shot to score with his legs so he did without hesitation and it worked for us. I don't think he was being cocky and not being a team player. Most QBs would be praised for a play like that.

If anything coach should have been all smiles and happy and gave Maurer a high 5 and say good job. Then maybe say something afterwards about securing the ball a little better next time. Didn't have to be a douche about it.

BYU beat ranked USC today. Maybe BYU is considerably better than most of you think.
Maybe. Or maybe USC still sucks.

Would you feel better if I said they were better than UAB and/or Vandy?

PS- I wish UT had their QB. That kid's a player.

Why would JG transfer?
Maybe for his education. Maybe because he would have an opportunity to start for a team that suits him better. Or maybe because UT has one of the better QB recruits in the country coming in who is "Pruitt's and Chaney's guy". Maybe he'll just want a change of scenery.

It looked like he called a run audible to himself instead of the running back. I think it was about that.

This is what happens when guys can't even get in the games against the lower part of the schedule. They can't act like they've been there before because they haven't.

They were pissed because he didn’t use two hands when diving into the end zone. Does Alton Howard ring a bell???

This...

How many times have Tennessee lost a ball into the endzone for a touchback. If you ever need to extend, you do it with two hands.

LOL... the lads got nads.
Exactly. He calls a play that apparently fooled the other team and maybe our own Coaches as well, and scored a touchdown. There can’t be many times that’s a bad thing. It was his first college td, wish he’d been congratulated by Pruitt instead of berated. Plenty of time to teach this coming week, without ruining Maurer’s first touchdown moment, on camera.

He's got nothing to gain by transferring until he is no longer named the starter by Coach Pruitt. It's all frog talk unless he were to get benched or suffer a serious injury between now and the end of the year. No way he leaves the starting QB position at UT because a few armchair QBs think he sucks.

He likely knows this was his only shot... I like the call he made.

And the coaches must think JG is a passer and dual threat which proves coaches can and will be wrong.....The good coaches aren't afraid to make the changes....the good coaches like a challenge...the good coaches are able to bend in the wind

I don't think the coaches believe JG is a dual threat at all. I don't think anybody believes he is and not sure why people even bring it up.

Wish our Coaches would take off the leash on Maurer and support him in the same way BYU Coaches support their young QB. Then we might get a chance to see an exciting QB making game winning plays.

That's just it...they did it because the fans were so irate....didn't want the kid to make game winning plays....did he get chewed out for making a game winning play....coaches embarrassed themselves today in front of a TV audience and the fans in the stadium...
IMO this year is a goner so play for the future
