Disregard. Chancellor Plowman apparently changed her mind.
I wasn't trying to sound whiny and I surely wasn't offended. There are other things in life that are too important. I was just disappointed in how this situation was being played out between the Chancellor and the Pride.
Have a lovely day!

Maybe it’s just me. I don’t consider making some kids in your organization wear specific clothing (once) they may not want to is bullying.

If players change uniforms or wear “Smokey” grey, they all have to. I bet there are some band members who think it’s kind of cool.

Bullying is bad, but can we keep it just for the kids or are actually being bullied.......and not make freakin everything about it?

Also, this is what we have come to in America. People at your work or organization tell kids to wear something. They don’t want to and get all pizzy. They complain try to get petitions going and all kinds of crap.

Kids, just do the thing you don’t want to.......just this one freakin time, for the sake of a young fan out there.

Hey can we just think of others for once and not simply “I don’t want to wear it.

I know this won't be important to some folks but I thought I would make everyone aware of something currently going on with the band. As many of you know, the Pride has a deep tradition of excellence that goes back 150 years. The students, current and alumni, take great pride in what happens with the band. The current band uniform was designed 60 years ago and is an iconic fixture in our stadium. Against the students' and directors' wishes, the chancellor has mandated that the band wear the new t-shirt that came about after the kid was bullied/made fun of in Florida last week. Unless she changes her mind, the band will show up in shorts and tshirts to the game on Saturday. The Director of Bands has fought this but was threatened with his job. The band students were told last night at rehearsal and are very upset and disappointed. They don't want to be the first ones to perform out of their uniform. I find it ironic that Chancellor Plowman is bullying the band into wearing something that they don't want to.
If you care, please consider letting Chancellor Plowman know your opinion via email at dplowman@utk.edu. Our premier university band does not want to have the appearance of a lackluster high school band while performing on the field!

Not sure how I feel about this, however the Pride will never have the appearance of a lackluster high school band and should never feel this way. (I don't think they would) I will say "t-shirts and shorts) does seem to go a bit far. They could maybe wear to "Ts" coming down to the stadium and have unie tops waiting to be put on as they enter the field. I have lifetime feels for the Pride as my father was "Band Captain" in the 30's. I was excepted in 60 (didn't go got married instead). Had a son who spent time with the Pride and a granddaughter excepted into the music program. (that's another story) So yes, this action leaves me in a quandary.

It is ironic. Bullying about a T-shirt has brought on bullying about a T-shirt.

guess bullying is bullying, no matter what the age, but, hey, I'd probably want to wear the T-shirt and shorts...should be a lot cooler, weather-wise...:D

GO BIG ORANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't forget this is also going to make someone lots of money. I just wonder if this would fall under to "SEC royalty" regulations. ( use this term for lack of know true name)

How is making kids wear something they don’t want to bullying?

For me: kids making fun of a kids homemade shirt = bullying

Kid smacking smaller kid = bullying

Kid consistently harassing another kid about his clothing = bullying

Someone in position of power tells kid (in their organization) hey you got to wear “this” just this one time = how the world works.

With a noon kickoff and 95 degrees, sounds like an amazing idea to me
About to say the same. You had one band member "fall out" during the Ga St. game and was getting marched over. IMO I wouldn't fight against it while the field temps are 110°.

It's a one time deal, right?

The original story is a great one. That a kid, not from Tennessee, who wants to show his PRIDE while participating in his school's spirit day and wears a homemade UT orange shirt/sign during our worst season start ever and is humiliated by his peers. This kid, who probably has shown he is a more faithful fan than most of the rest of us, is being recognized for his faithfulness to the VOLS by the Pride of the Southland Band, is a good and encouraging thing. Please don't let "Tradition" stop us from being human. Do it gladly for the rest of us that unfortunately have to be reminded during tough times, what it means to be a true fan.

Marching band is about tradition....and the uniforms they wear are no exception. I believe it goes back to the start of the band, which was in the military. Thus, they wear military inspired uniforms.

I don’t think it matters what they perform in, but I can see the kids’ reluctance to buck tradition. However, this is a great story to rally behind and I think the gesture is nice.

Why is this a big deal? We are a society of whinners. Our society is doomed

Very hypocritical and I'm sure the media won't miss the ineptitude in the UT doing this. Seems the university administration people go out of their way to make the university look bad. I can just see everyone saying, "Did you see what those dumb Tennessee hicks did this time?"
