Here's my take ...
Kids have no loyalty this year. They commit to a University not out of blood loyalty but because of promises given and perceived opportunity. Our roster isn't full of in state life long UT fans.
We, as Vols fans, live and die by this team. We bleed orange.
These kids (painting with a broad brush but still I'd venture to say 95% at least) weren't Vols fans growing up. Hell, UT has sucked for most if not all of their lives. Most came here under promises given under a previous staff, and have been through hell while on campus here. The past few years has been a complete **** show. Hell, one of the kids recently came out this off season and said they didn't even get enough food because of Butch's lack of nutritional program. There's been no S&C, so many haven't developed and they've seen friends and teammates medically retire at an alarming rate, etc. It's been hell.
And I know it was recently tweeted that most of the remaining players on the roster are Pruitt recruits, but lets be honest, that '18 class was mostly Butch kids plus a handful that CJP and staff were able to throw together in three weeks.
Bottom line is, we as fans literally hurt when the team loses. Some of the players do, some don't. They don't bleed orange. It isn't just a Tennessee issue. Just look at the transfer portal updates - few kids anywhere have loyalty to any program. They go where they go for the best opportunity. So combine all the reasons why the lack of genuine loyalty to UT exists, coupled with the frustration a lot of these kids deal with with this program, and the basic toxic atmosphere that comes with social media, twitter especially (I've long thought twitter is basically a haven for extremists and trolls - just check out a political or 'racial' subject for proof), and it is what it is.
Fans need to get over themselves. Stop @'ing the players and expecting them to not respond when they're being insulted or ridiculed.
