Bench JG against BYU

Protection was an issue. Both lines got man handled today. The blindside hit that caused the fumble shouldn't occur against a 2-10 sunbelt team, ever. That said, the D lost this game not JG. This isn't debatable, suggesting otherwise reveals a profound lack of objectivism.

It’s called “pocket presence”. Who’s job is it to read the defense?

Who led a MASSIVELY undertalented team to a win? Who made the plays when he needed to? Who fumbled and threw a pick when he didn't need to?

If "stats" when GEORGIA STATE is playing prevent with the game out of reach are more impressive to you than wins... that's truly pathetic.

PS- GSU's QB started out something like 1 for 7. He didn't get rattled and finished 10/17 for the rest of the game. He kept his O moving. He led his team. His team rallied around him.

You have to wonder if JG's locker room issues really were resolved at this point.
No stats on earth can excuse or justify JG’s inability to see open receivers downfield and throw the ball to the strength of our O. His checkdown performance was inexcusable, and his failure to man up lead this team and take accountability afterwards for his poor execution even more so.

Got two arms? Do you have legs or no legs or one leg? You have the physical tools of JG too!

Well yeah, but I can't throw it on the college level for most patterns or have the speed needed. I think JG has much of that, but mentally, he seems to not get it. It happens, and we see this in a lot of QBs at this level, not just JG. We hear it every week on sites like ESPN about even some of the more known QBs.

I’m sure he’ll start against BYU. But not sure he’ll finish. He’s wound too tight; trying not to make an error. You have to be able to throw it downfield and trust your receivers. Screw the sliding to protect yourself, dive forward for the extra yardage. The team needs a leader by example now.
I don't mind sliding to protect yourself. The problem was not knowing where the 1st down marker was. Yeah there's no yellow line but there are the markers to see where it's at and sliding before you get to them when you had the chance to actually run past them and then slide is unforgivable. He probably could've got 3-4 more yards after the 1st down marker before he would have had to slide...
Honestly. I was surprised he even pulled it down and ran it. Probably surprised him too which is why he slid before the 1st down and some:oops:

These 2 posts take me back to a replay and comment by Ryan Leaf. It was also glaringly obvious when shown, when JG ran and then slid short of the 1st down when he could of easily ran for a couple more yards, there were 2 receivers WIDE OPEN with empty field to the end zone. That was before he ever took off across the LOS.
Best takeaway is we had Ryan Leaf consrantly questioning JG's mental approach and decision making. Yes, Ryan Leaf.

Coach fatal error riding with JG. He should have watched last year performance and chose another QB. To late now he’s got to go with choice JG.

Don't throw a 90 mph fast ball from 7 yards away to create a turnover and points to start the game. Don't hold the ball long enough for a CB to blitz all the way from the sideline and cause a fumble. Select the RIGHT receiver once in awhile. Read secondaries and don't throw the ball into triple coverage down the middle.

Mostly... when your team needs you, make a play rather than "safe" throws that pad stat lines but don't win games.
And for God’s sake step up and be the leader of this team. When you lose to Sunbelt State in your home opener MAN UP and take accountability for your mistakes and pledge to get better. There’s no stat in the world that measures leadership except W’s and L’s. And that’s ALL that counts from here on after such a humiliating performance and beatdown.

JG should be playing div 2. he is pathetic. 3rd and 3 and he throws it behind the line of scrimmage. The pass before the half where he drilled the ball and high to Palmer ,who was wide open. You can defend him all you want but he is not even an avg QB. Too bad Pruitt dont have enough sense to sit him.
Why was there even a TE route short of the first down on that play? That’s what I really don’t get. Poorly designed play and poor decision to yet again throw short of the sticks, especially to a guy that never sees the ball and doesn’t know what to do once he does get it.

You have to give that kid credit. In that first half it didn’t look like he could throw a pass in the ocean, except for when it really mattered. When he needed to make a big throw he did. Clutch player.

And anyone who played sports can tell you that you don’t need markers to know where you are on the field or on a court. When you play all the time you know where you are at all times. It becomes innate.

I don't have a problem with JG. But you have to do something. You can't lose to GA State and do nothing.

Go back and watch the replay tonight, count the seconds after snap, oline protection was not a problem. Defense was trash, but we should have been able to outscore Georgia State. We had the opportunity to do so, and did not.
That’s just it....most only watch the game. Very few actually dig deeper than what they see on the surface. If there’s a sack, o line, regardless of time. Int, qb, no matter the receivers effort or lack of. Ext ext.

I think it's obvious Pruitt doesn't want to open it up like we need to.
I think it’s becoming obvious that JG is the common denominator in the last 3 OCs play calling all being exactly the same. I like JG but I say it’s time to move on if he doesn’t start moving this offense. We have 3 excellent senior receivers that are on their last ride to make it to the NFL. A qb that doesn’t give them a chance in an effort to protect his personal stat lines is beyond unacceptable.

What do you mean?
Shrout only has 1 year of starting experience total and his numbers were not great by any stretch. He’s a little more mobile than JG but still a true pocket passer. Plus he’s erratic at times. He kills it in 7on7 but with a full defense on the field he seems to struggle. Maurer is not only more accurate than both of them (despite what you read in the media) but he’s a TRUE duel threat. He’s as accurate as Harrison Bailey with a stronger arm from the pocket and equally as effective on the run. And He remains a passer until he crosses the LOS. After crossing the LOS he runs a 4.5. Not many will catch him in open field.

Agreed. Maurer showed great command in the Spring game. Yes he turned it over but so did JG yesterday. We have to try something different.
To add to that JG nearly threw 2 ints himself. JTS actually did but was bailed out by an early whistle. Maurers 1st int was bad but you can’t convince me Keyton couldn’t have made the play on his second int.

Really!!? Why the hell is he not playing? Surely if you have this information, the coaching staff has to? Give me a winner.

The thing that keeps coming to my mind was that Maurer instinctively slid around the pocket. He made Fr mistakes but he has the instincts. He also knew when to pull it down and take off.

But the biggest thing UT needs is a QB who can make good timely decisions and "see what's about to happen". JG seldom if ever throws a receiver open. He has a great arm so he can wait until they are open then throw it. But in doing so the receiver has no opportunity to make yards after the catch.

You can describe it many different ways but at the bottom of it... the mental part of the game just hasn't come to him. He's 4 years in so it is pretty much time to move on in spite of his great physical talent.

This is completely unsatisfactory.
D sucked, blocking sucked O line and D line.
D Cord can't stop the option ALL GAME LONG!
Unbelievable. Pruitt can't allow this to happen. Trust your coaches my a**! Take control of the dang ship!!
Seriously put the freshman QB in.
JG has bad sense of awareness, throws it way too quick when he doesn't need to, then keeps it way to long when he needs to get rid of it. It is backwards.
He is playing scared against GA state. They played tough we played like we didn't care someone was punching you and taking your lunch money.
WTF! screw this
Was it JG that gave up 38 points?
