Kirby Smart still learning to be a head coach

“Tennessee has fallen so far... a lot of it was internal and the wrong decisions.”

So glad we have Fulmer back running the ship. The athletics department was truly mismanaged for years. I wonder how different the recruiting and coaching up would have been Pruitt’s first year had Fulmer been hired earlier and got Pruitt on board long before Currie and team made us a laughing stock.

Max Howell says Pruitt is in a better position as a first-time head coach with Fulmer as AD than Kirby Smart is as a first-time head coach and is why Smart is making mistakes.

Max Howell: Jeremy Pruitt rebuilding Vols' program that 'could not compete in the SEC'

Kirby inherited tons of talent from an underperforming 9-3 team that had been previously coached by a very good coach in Richt. Pruitt inherited a 4-8 clusterf--k from an incompetent head coach (Butch)....

Kirby needs to keep Butch's play chart...the one that told Butch to pass 4 times from the one, and the one that told Kirby to fake punt on 4th and 11 with a lead on Bama in SEC CG

Butch was always trying to trick play (they will never think of this!) his way to the end zone rather than line up and just beat them man to man.

Success comes when, even if they KNOW you are going to run, your OLine makes holes and your RBs can make people miss and then drag them for an extra 5 yards after first contact AKA smashmouth football. Even if they KNOW you are going to pass, they cant get penetration on your QB and your WR are like greased lighting up the field with hands like duct tape.

Butch didnt understand that you have to win the trenches, win the air war, THEN you can throw in a trick play now and again for explosive plays and keep the oppo off balance. Bama doesnt need trick plays, they just run it down your throat and pass it over your head to their WR waiting in the EZ.

That is most likely how Pruitt thinks to win (by what he has repeatedly said) and is why he is far more likely to be successful as a HC in the SEC than Butch.

Well, if Pruitt is in better position with Fulmer, and Smart is still learning on the job, then it is a matter of time that Pruitt will beat Smart. Like I’ve been saying all along, Smart can’t beat Pruitt, and it will be #soon...😉🥴

The score was 28-28 when the fake punt happened.

If Fulmer can keep the fat cats at bay for a few more years we’ll be in damn good position.
Agreed, boosters need to know their place and drop their pride. Donate the money and let someone more experienced make the decisions instead of feeling like your "gifts" grant you the big boy pants to make decisions. Seems like Fulmer is the type who wont let them pressure him just based on numbers on a check and thats what weve needed for a long time.

We've all seen it, Kirby Smart is not a very good game day coach. He's alright, but certainly nothing special. The jury is still out on CJP but when Butch Jones has a winning record against you a good game day coach you just cannot be.

Aren't they 1-1 against each other?

In fairness to The Butcher, that strategy worked for me coaching upward flag football for three, maybe four, games before the opponent caught on. So clearly it was worth trying in the SEC... That's what we paid him the big bucks for!

It’s been talked about it at length on here obviously but it was so frustrating that guys with no business making huge football decisions we’re in charge. Dave Hart and curry were not guys from the academic world. They both were intellectual types that were school administrators. What on earth they were doing making those decisions is mind boggling. That’s like apple promoting a accountant to ceo. That would never happen. College football teams aren’t run like publicly traded companies but they should be. A successful public company has a board of trustees that vote on potential candidates for ceo. When they really want someone they tie them to the success of the program with huge incentives/bonuses.

I was always loved that “trick play” when Butch would have the QB go under center and bring in extra blockers. It was so obviously a pass every time and it seemed like he really thought he was fooling people.
