I’m optimistic about our DL. Losing Gooden is a big blow but there’s still talent there. John Mincey looked really good before he broke his arm last year. Emerson was a top 100 player out of high school but unfortunately broke his ankle. Reports out of camp are that he’s recovered and looking good. According to the VQ article today the coaching staff believe that Kingston Harris is a day 2 draft pick. Then we have Solomon if eligible and Area 51 who, if nothing else can be a run stuffer. Then there’s the juco guys who, if they just give us what Gooden did last year that will be very helpful. So we won’t be elite there but we have talent. I think we’ll be bette than last year at that position.

Glass half full, youngins will be experienced necks yurr when in state tribe arrives.

Sounds exactly like my first one. Prayed for death. Thought the dr was nuts to tell me I had a kidney stone. Thought only old guys got stones. I'm at 13 stones and counting so far. This will sound nuts, but you'll get used to it. Maybe because you know you really aren't dying. Just feels that way.

I can remember one where I was pacing the ER hall pulling a morphine IV after the demerol didn't touch the pain. Went into the bathroom and began dry heaves from the pain. Had red whelts on my face from breaking blood vessels. Couldn't see the whites of my eyes. They had turned red from the dry heaves.

I've broken a lot of bones and had some operations, but there's absolutely no more intense pain than a kidney stone. I've had women who've had both tell me the stones are far worse than labor. Rough go for sure. Hang in there.

Yeah, the first one is terrifying because you don’t know what’s happening. I’ve only had about a half dozen, although the three-surgery one was a doozie.

One time I had gotten a stone down to the bladder so the worst was over and I went on in to the office. I was chugging water and in and out of the bathroom all day trying to pass it the rest of the way out. Best kidney stone joke ever uttered— one of my friends said, “C’mon, don’t be like Kobe, pass the rock!”

Holy Cow, 13 stones!! Maybe you should have just asked for bigger stones instead of so many.

I know it will be hard to believe but I've had probably 70 at least in my lifetime. I had my first at 19 and had them my entire life. Still have them to this day. My sister had them, my mom and her mom before her so hereditary is a factor.
When I was having the most of them was when insurance would deny pre-existing conditions. I had to go 1 yr without an issue and that just didn't happen. Remember many times trying to tought it out attempting to get that year.
So I empathize with those dealing with stones!#
Sweet mother of mercy.

Kannell is a tool. His take on this one is stupid as all get out. Hellz no he should not get a ring for quitting on the team in the middle of the season. He left them high and dry and almost cost them a chance to make the playoffs when Lawrence got hurt against Syracuse and had to go to the 3rd string guy. Good grief. I am not sure who Jason Brown is, but he is right on target here.

I agree Bass. Good post. It's not a depth issue, it's experience we're lacking. We have plenty of DL on the team, they just need to practice, get better, and go play. And I have faith in our coaching staff and S&C coaches that these kids will play to the best of their ability. And with the DB group looking very good and extremely talented on the backend it'll help the DL greatly.

I'm looking forward to watching our ballhawking defense cause way more turnovers than we're used to which will allow the offense short fields to work with. Getting close to kickoff, boys!

I know you mentioned the S&C staff, but it can't be talked about enough how much bigger our DL guys are than the last 3-4 years. These guys have gained a lot of good body mass this past offseason and won't be pushed around like last year. The Gooden news was disrupting, yes, but I am not fretting as reports are saying others are having great spring and fall camps so far on top of the weight gain. That and they have 1 more year in the system than they did last year. All of those signs point towards a better unit than last year.

In short, I agree with you and @Bassmaster_Vol

Damn, you’ve probably got bored out ureters that are tough as leather by now. It’s garden hoses in there.

Yep and Gooden will be back as well. Just think of that defense with all that experience on the DL, Taylor, Thompson, Flowers are juniors, Burrell and Tank are sophomores, and Henry To, Crouch, and Harrison are sophomores with experience. That’s going to be an elite top 20 at worst defense imo. And what if JG comes back for his senior year and you land a guy like Jarrett at receiver to go with Keyton and Palmer if he returns? Our team could make some noise next year boys.

i think most folks realize this, and what @Bassmaster_Vol are saying.

the Dl was a ? coming in. that hasn't changed because of this. just a little bigger ? now.

my main concern, and it was a concern before gooden too, is staying healthy. we knew that was gonna be a key.

it just narros the margin for error now. but it doesn't "change" anything as far as the out look on the season, really. i do agree with that.

Let’s be honest, the most important coach of a lineman is the S&C coach. Keeping Fitz was yuuuuge.

2018 UT Defense Rankings

Rushing Defense - 52nd
Passing Defense - 60th
Sacks - 67th
TFL - 77th
Total Defense - 49th

Our Defense was much improved last year, but we still weren't stellar. Our guys were switching to a 3-4 and they gave their all. However, we didn't lose a lot of 3-4 experience when you think about it. I hate that Gooden is out for the season, but there is nothing that indicates that a stronger and more mentally prepared group can't at least match last year's performance. I happen to think that a group of young men hungry to prove that, while inexperienced in SEC play they may be, they are not going to be pushed around like a Butch Jones No S&C DL could be. This is a Jeremy Pruitt DL and they will play with an attitude.

How about this headline?

“Gooden’s four sacks and two forced fumbles lead the Volunteers to a 35-13 rout in Norman”

I understand they have some experience/years in the system now, but is there any reason to believe Bituli and Ignont will be more than just average? I can’t recall any of them flashing in any game

Any game? Bituli had multiple 20 tackle games two yrs ago. Ignont got several snaps last yr and was solid. Bituli issue is vs spread teams. He needs to be at OLB against those teams but we didn’t have luxury to do that last yr. I expect he will be there this yr and then at MLB on traditional downs/teams. It won’t surprise me if Ignont has solid year. He has slimmed down some. I’m not worried about ILB we got a to of talent.
