With the acclimation period now over, Tennessee was in full pads for the first time in fall camp Wednesday and athletics director Phillip Fulmer made his first public appearance during camp.

The media saw three periods of practice and will hear from head coach Jeremy Pruitt later this afternoon.

Here are some quick observations…

First things first, I noted in a quick thread right after practice, but Emmit Gooden and Nathan Niehaus were not seen at practice during the open periods. We expect to get confirmation on Gooden’s knee injury from Pruitt and hope to learn an update on Niehaus’ status.

Meanwhile, Tennessee’s offensive line shuffled up its first unit Wednesday, with Ryan Johnson taking the initial reps at center over Brandon Kennedy. The rest of the unit — Wanya Morris, Trey Smith, K’Rojhn Calbert and Marcus Tatum — remained the same. I only watched the unit for a short time today and they were doing quick sprints out of their stances during that period. Jim Chaney was as agitated with that unit as we've seen him all camp. During that same period, Brian Niedermeyer had his tight ends working on a scrape blocking drill.

Sophomore tailback Jeremy Banks returned to practice after missing Tuesday, while Chris Akporoghene, Ollie Lane and Jordan Allen remained inside working with the S&C staff.

With no Gooden, Tracy Rocker was shuffling his unit around throughout the period. Elijah Simmons got overheated at one point and walked off the field with trainers. During a gap assignment drill and a separate pass rush drill, the unit rotated constantly, with Darel Middleton, Greg Emerson and Aubrey Solomon taking the first reps, with Matthew Butler, Kingston Harris and Savion Williams going next. But they rotated so much, with John Mincey working once with Middleton and Solomon and Latrell Bumphus going with Harris and Williams it would be an overstatement to suggest any sort of specific depth chart info here.

At outside linebacker, Quavaris Crouch looked fine after getting dinged (shoulder) up Tuesday. I liked what I saw from Kivon Bennett briefly today, too. At inside linebacker, JJ Peterson was rep-hunting today. He had a little more eagerness about him today.

During the corner/release drill, I saw four or five reps, with notables including Warren Burrell losing to Marquez Callaway and Alontae Taylor beating Deangleo Gibbs. I continue to like what I’ve seen from freshman Kenney Solomon. He needs a year in the weight room, but he’s competitive, long and can run. He could be useful on special teams this fall and then battle for real snaps in 2020.

As for the quarterbacks and wideouts, I charted the entire red zone drill Wednesday. Suffice to say, Chris Weinke and Jim Chaney are force-feeding reps to JT Shrout and Brian Maurer in an effort to find a backup for Jarrett Guarantano. By my count during the seven-minute drill, Shrout attempted 17 passes, completing 14, throwing two errant balls and a drop. Maurer completed 12 passes, with three bad reps and a drop. At times, the two freshmen would take three reps in a row. Meanwhile in the same drill, Guarantano had just 12 total reps, with 10 completions and two drops. All the throws were short fades, quick slants, arrow routes and double-moves to back corner.

Don't know that it matters but a minor difference

Simonton saying Simmons was over heated but Brown saying he appeared to get poked in the eye.

Nothing but I say we fight about it anyway.
as long as no one says he fell on a helmet..........i'm probably not gonna care. :)

To have an ADVANTAGE you need something the other team doesn’t receive.

Team plays 8 conference games with 4 home and 4 away. In one year, they play 4 true home games, 3 true road games, and one neutral (where half the stadium is their fans). Every other conference team plays 4 true road games.

In the next year, they play 3 true home games and 4 away, and one neutral where they STILL have half of their fans in the stadium. It isn't a true home with entire stadium, but it isn't a road game either. Team never plays that same opponent on the road just like every other team in the conference.

I am not talking about an advantage over UF. It's an advantage over every other team in the conference. That is a slight advantage however you want to cut it.

Both teams lose a true home game...no advantage. It would be like the same two NFL teams playing in London every season. You act like there’s no wear and tear in these games. You’re no healthier than other teams having to play on the road. Not even a slight advantage.

Has nothing to do with health. Has to do how the rest of the schedule falls. It's ok. We can be done.
