Even when Pruitt gave his coaches some time off recently before camp, he was contacting them in the morning with a list of prospects they needed to reach out to in recruiting every day. This staff is going to work its tail off in recruiting, but at some point, the results have to measure up, too. Not big results, but progress. That will help a ton when it comes to the 2020 class.
Way too soon to really have this conversation, but you can see Shrout has a huge arm. Just as big, if not bigger than Guarantano’s. That’s a small part of the position, but he can really sling it. At this point in camp, you have to give Shrout the advantage based on his experience and having almost a full year longer to learn than Maurer. Maurer also definitely needs to add some weight. Guarantano looks like a college quarterback. Maurer still looks like a high school quarterback. Shrout is kind of in the middle.
We haven’t heard anything really since Maurer arrived about the status of the competition. Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney was just kind of teaching the offense this spring; it didn’t sound like the competition had really started in earnest. And the Vols have had only two practices in pads at this point. To circle back to the bottom line of your question, I’d say Shrout has the narrow edge in what’s still a wide-open competition based solely on his “experience.”
I’ll probably give it three episodesMy daughter tried to get me into that show last year. I made it through about 20 minutes of S1E1 and decided nope.
Not earning fans on here with the Shrout stuff.Interesting tidbits (IMO) from Ubbens mailbag:
Mauer vs Shrout
Theres some more but I'm a big believer in the Athletic and Ubbens work so I don't want to copy pasta all of it like I had no problem with the 247 or VQ hacks.

I looked up his stats. Really good hitting numbers for a young 2B. If he continues to develop, I will agree that he will be very special. Dang it.He’s doing things as a middle infielder, at his age, that have literally never been done in MLB history.
He’s special.
And Toronto wanted him for Marcus Stroman....
