Tennessee football legend Bert Rechichar passed away at age 89 on Friday.

Rechichar was a captain on the 1951 consensus national championship football team, collecting All-SEC First Team honors as a wingback for the Vols.

VOL LEGEND BERT RECHICHAR PASSES AWAY AT 89 - University of Tennessee Athletics

A 1st round draft pick, Bert held the longest NFL field goal conversion record until his record was broken by Tom Dempsey. I remember when the record was broken but I did not know it was held by the former UT great.

Former Colt Bert Rechichar, who once held record for NFL’s longest field goal, dies

RIP, my deepest condolences to Mr. Rechichar's family and friends. True VFL.

His NFL record long FG was 56 yards. Dempsy broke it kicking it 63 yards. Alex Karras said he didn't even try to block it, didn't think he had a chance.

I understand Dempsy having a foot problem that required the "special shoe", but it didn't need a horseshoe attached to is face. It makes no difference this day and time, Bert's record would have been broken several years ago anyway. 56 yrds. this day and time is just a long field goal, nothing really special.
